It wasn't every day that Hieb stuck around the soldiers that were training. He was considering joining their ranks instead of being a scout, not that it really mattered much at this point. The Scouts and Soldiers were intermingling a lot with the murders happening on the borders and everyone was in high alert.

Typically he would stick around the border and patrol, but everyone needed days of training. Just walking and watching did nothing for protection skills, so here he was, ready to fight. Sparring was nothing new to him, but with tensions high, everything was far more intense than what he learned when he was younger.

He sparred with his parents, who had both started off as scouts, and occasionally his siblings and their family friends. Sparring with the soldiers was different, though. He heard someone ask for a spar and his eyes zeroed in on the soldier.

"I will," He walked towards her, ready just in case she decided to attack immediately.

Hieb knew to expect the attack, but he didn't quite move fast enough to avoid a complete hit. He was sure it would bruise later, at least, but it wasn't anything he wasn't used to. Bruises were common when sparring, and at least she hadn't drawn any blood.

He didn't wait to lunge at her once he felt he was safe from another immediate attack. He had fortunately landed his blow, but he didn't want to stay close enough to allow her to get another hit in.

Moving away was his best bet, though he wasn't sure if he would be able to get another hit in now that she knew how he attacked. He would have to wait for her.

The scout was very glad his tactic worked. It was something his father taught him - he was less willing to get hit than his mate, Hieb's mother - and it probably wouldn't work again. She didn't look too pleased with his ability to avoid her, though.

He hesitated, unsure if he should say something encouraging. He doubted it would make her calmer - it would probably just make her even more angry! This wasn't like a spar between his family, after all.

He likely hesitated too long, however, for when he lunged at her once again, he didn't feel a complete hit land. Perhaps it would be enough to come out on top!

He felt the glancing blow and knew immediately that he had made a mistake trying to attack her so soon. He should have waited - but lesson learned! He would have to try something else.

He twisted his body to try to hit her once more before she became out of range again, but the blow did not land. Not even close, in fact. He pulled away to give himself some distance and catch his breath. Next attack, he would definitely be ready for it.

The missed hit didn't mean much, he could probably still win. Maybe.

He knew she was coming for him, to strike him. He moved as well as he could, but he could feel the exhaustion from the battle begin to weigh on him. He felt the strike, though it was a light one - a near miss - and made a valiant attempt to reciprocate it.

And failed.

He winced, feeling that this spar would need to come to a close very soon, but he could make it just a bit longer.

One last full hit from the each of them, and Hieb felt exhausted enough to quit. He stared at his sparring partner for a moment and gave a small nod. "We're fairly evenly matched," he told her.

Perhaps on a different day, one of them could have been declared a definitive winner, but today was not that day. "Perhaps another day we can spar again," he told her. Perhaps she would want a chance to defeat him, but this would only push him to try to become stronger. She was a worthy opponent after all.

Now, he thought, he could use a nap.
