- He will become very weak and dizzy after a simple use of his abilities. For example, if a telepath tries to read his mind, his ability won’t allow it (subconsciously) and he can lose all focus and become nauseated without knowing why.
- He cannot control his powers in the least, when they are revealed. He may try to use them on command, but he will usually fail.
What is their personality like?
Joel has an irritable personality. He is much more of a brooding, angry type rather than outgoing. However, he is also very charming and charismatic, making friends much more easily than the next person. He is pretty indifferent about Deviants. He doesn’t see them as more of a threat than humans and is very fair in that aspect. He will always do what his heart tells him to do, even though it has to fight with his mind a lot.
He has a strange flip to his personality while in different situations. Normally, even in a serious situation, he can be quite relaxed and calm-minded. However, if something strikes his nerves just right, than a frightening anger can be revealed. That is very, very rare, however.
What is their backstory?
Joel McClanahan was born and raised in Sacramento. He grew up with a relatively normal family. He found out that his little sister, Lana, had Deviant powers when she was a baby. When she cried, the light fixtures would shake and sparks of electricity would fly. Joel was scared. He was scared that she’d be killed for who she was. Joel’s parents were unsure of what to do. But one night, they told Joel to keep it a secret from everyone. They warned him that he could lose his sister if the secret slipped. From that day on, Joel never told a soul about his sister.
By the time Joel turned seventeen and Lana was thirteen, Joel was practicing with his little sister how to control her powers. She was a sarcastic, childish teenager, but she genuinely cared that she would not get caught. Often times, she would accidentally electrocute Joel, but not enough to kill him. The hospital staff began to wonder why he kept getting hit by lightning even while it wasn’t storming.
Somehow, when Joel turned nineteen and Lana was fifteen, a Deviant hunter caught wind of a boy who had been sent to the hospital countless times because of electrocution. The hunter, in the darkness of the night, broke into their house. However, Joel awoke to the loud crash. He ran downstairs to find the hunter holding his mother at gun point. The hunter yelled for Joel to come with him, thinking that he was the Deviant. Joel looked upstairs, where his sister was hiding behind the top of the stairwell. He smiled sadly and raised his hands, pretending to be the Deviant. The moment he did so, his father was rushing from behind him with a kitchen knife in his hand, running towards the hunter. The hunter shot him twice in the torso. In a rage, Joel’s mother struggled out of his grasp and ran towards Joel with open arms. Joel was petrified from fear and sadness. More gunshots rang out and his mother dropped to the ground. His family was dying, one by one. Lana finally started running downstairs. ”No! Don’t come down here!” Joel yelled to his sister before being tackled by the hunter. She froze halfway down the stairs. The hunter, with his gun in hand, accidentally shot Joel in the middle of his torso. He clearly had other plans rather than just killing him, thinking he was a Deviant. The hunter ran, figuring he would die and all would be lost. Lana finally came downstairs. All Joel could really see was her crying face and all he could really hear was her apologizing for being born. He wanted to say that she meant everything to him, but his vision faded to black and his body went limp. He woke up in the hospital a week later, having only survived by blood transfusion and hundreds of surgeries. He was told his parents were dead. And that his sister was missing. Ran away. The only light in this darkness was gone. After he recovered, Joel joined the Sacramento Police Department as a cop. When he turned twenty-six, he was promoted to Homicide Detective. However, his underlying mission for joining the police was to search and find his sister.
It was there that Joel and his partner James had run into a deviant named Lexi. The girl was able to shed some light on a particularly difficult case of theirs, which led them to another deviant named Hyde, with the ability to control and influence the minds of others. James was able to find the proof they needed that Hyde was who they were looking for, but Hyde was stronger than all three of them, and in the end he forced James to shoot both Joel, and Hyde. Both survived, but while Joel sat in the hospital with a healing shoulder, James was thrown in jail. Joel made an attempt to get him released, but when they refused he was forced to take other actions. Before he could find a solution, however, Sacramento was attacked, and they were all separated. James was no longer in police custody, and no one that was left knew where he had gone. It felt like losing his family all over again. He has refused to believe James was killed, however, and has been heading towards the new Providence HQ in DC. Although it was the other side of the country, he felt that that would be the best place to start, unsure of where else to go. Perhaps he would run into old acquaintances that would have some insight one what had happened to James and even Lexi.
