In the spring of 1842, the famous circus owner P.T. Barnum added to his collection the Feejee Mermaid. Suppoused to be a "real" sea creature, the mermaid became extremely famous, even if in reality it was nothing but the head and torso of a baby monkey sewed to the tail of a fish, all dessicated to form a rather creepy creature.
Even being a fake, the Feejee mermaid was just the first one of its kind, inspiring artists and tricksters alike. - Date: 01/15/2010
