Seeing no kindness in his heart, the Enchantress turned the Prince into a hideous beast and cast a spell on the entire castle. Ashamed, the beast hid himself away inside his castle. The rose she had offered him was truly an 'enchanted rose'. If he could learn to love another and receive her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.
