Description:
Sappers were picked men from grenadier (carabinier) company. They were equipped with axes. Sappers wore grenadier uniform with crossed axes and grenade badges on the sleeves. Their fur cap was without front plate.
Beards were mandatory.
During combat they broke in gates, chopped gaps in palisades, built small bridges or destroyed them, broke garden walls or loopholed them to provide protected firing positions for the infantry.

- Thanks! I was overwhelmed when I discovered that stacking the shako and the bear hat contributed to a look resembling the bonnet d'ourson. I love reading about these guys, too. As fierce as they look, they're also the first to die. Engineers. Prime targets in a battle.
