• Alejandra Brown loved the color brown. But her favorite color was burnt sienna. When Alejandra gave birth to her first daughter, she wanted her name to be a shade of brown. Any normal person would have named their daughter Sienna. But apparently, Alejandra was no normal person. She named her daughter Burnt. Of course her middle name was Sienna, but that didn’t matter much. So her full name was Burnt Sienna Brown.
When Burnt first started Kindergarten, she was in love with her name. The other kids weren’t. Not even the teacher Miss Aaliyah Hertz was crazy about the name Burnt. The only person the liked really liked Burnt was a girl named Celia Going.
The whole name thing wasn’t that much of a problem until 6th grade. Everyone made fun of Burnt 24/7, except for Celia of course.
One day during Christmas vacation, Burnt called Celia. Burnt told her that she was moving to New Jersey. Celia noticed that Burnt didn’t sound sad at all. The next day Celia went to school. Apparently a girl named Sienna enrolled into Mary Margaret Middle. From the start Celia was a little suspicious of Sienna. After weeks of observing Sienna, Celia confronted her. “Hi Sienna I’m Celia,” said Celia. “Um, hi,” said Sienna nervously. “Don’t I know you from somewhere, Burnt?” asked Celia. “Um, who’s Burnt?” questioned Sienna. “Oh, just my best friend, you know, she conveniently moved away the same day you Burnt Sienna Brown enrolled in this school,” said Celia sarcastically. Burnt knew Celia wasn’t an idiot. She would have graduated elementary school top of the class if it wasn’t for Yi Ling, a Japanese-American girl with Einstein’s brains. Burnt knew that eventually Celia would put two and two together and realize her secret. “Okay, okay Celia. I am Burnt. My name is Burnt Sienna Brown. I’m really sorry Celia!” cried Burnt. “I understand, Burnt, you were always made fun of because of your name, and now you’re popular because of your name,” said Celia calmly. Burnt couldn’t believe that Celia was so collected and understanding. “Celia please keep my secret!” begged Burnt. “I don’t think I can, Sienna,” said Celia with no emotion showing. Burnt started to cry. Her best friend, BFF if you will, had just stabbed her in the back. But then again Burnt also stabbed Celia. Burnt was confused. She thought Celia understood.
After something like that, any other person would have given up on Celia, but then again Burnt was no normal person. Burnt just wanted her friend back. One day Burnt saw Celia in the hallway talking to Chloe Anderson. “Hi Celia, haven’t seen you in a while!” exclaimed Burnt. Celia replied, “Oh, hi, Sienna. Maybe I didn’t want to see you in a while.” Chloe gave Burnt a you-rotten-friend-stealer look. “Just saying hi!” said Burnt, her smile fading. “Just saying bye!” said Celia in the same tone, but oh so sarcastically. Burnt decided it was time for a new best friend. Hannah Wells? No. Gabriyela Alvarez? No. Amaya Hernandez? Perfect!
“Hi Amaya!” said Burnt {still in disguise as Sienna} “Um, hi, Sienna, you don’t usually talk to me,” replied Amaya. “Oh, because of the whole ‘I’m cooler than you thing? Yeah I’m sorry. I want to be friends!” said Burnt. “With who? Remember, I’m too much of a loser,” said Amaya sarcastically. Celia turned the corner to the hallway that Burnt was standing in. She immediately started laughing and saying, “Oh Amaya, you crack me up, I’ve never had a funnier, and smarter friend, Oh ha, ha, ha!” Celia walked by and started talking to Amaya. “Hey Amaya, what about that math test? Number 12 was so hard!” “Oh, I know, I bet $10,000 that I got it wrong. I can’t believe you think it was hard. You know, being as smart as you are,” said Amaya back. “Thanks Amaya, oh, better get to history class!” said Celia happily. “It’s time already? Bye Sienna,” called Amaya. “Yeah, bye Sienna!” yelled Celia. After class that day Burnt ran into Celia again. This time she was talking to Gabriyela Alvarez about a “super fun sleepover” they had had with Chloe, Hannah and Amaya. They stopped talking after about 3 minutes, and Celia walked by Burnt. As she walked by she said, “Ok, Burnt, number one, don’t try to make everyone hate me, I’m friends with everybody. Number 2, Amaya is my friend, and number 3, I don’t like you, leave me alone.” Then Burnt said something she regretted, “Who said I wanted to be your friend?” Even Celia couldn’t hold back the tears. “Oh my gosh, Celia I’m so sorry!” called Burnt. “You know, just leave me alone, or I will tell everyone your precious secret!” yelled Celia. Celia turned around and hung her head. She could tell that Gabriyela had heard everything and felt sorry for Celia, because Gabriyela started patting her on the back and saying, “It’s ok Celia, you’ll be fine!” Burnt wanted to go after her and yell at Gabriyela, “Get away from her, she’s my best friend!” Then apologize for being a stupid jerk. But she didn’t. After that she was seriously starting to doubt they’d ever be friends again.
“Burnt, what’s wrong?” asked Alejandra. “Celia hates me, and I mean it, she hates me!” replied Burnt sadly. “Not everyone hates you sweetie! They are just jealous!” said Alejandra. Obviously, Alejandra had no clue what was going on. Burnt figured that that was just a phrase they teach you in parenting school. But Burnt knew what she had to do.
The next day at school, in the cafeteria, did something. She stood up in front as soon as everyone was seated. “Hi, um, most of you know me as Sienna, but don’t call me Sienna anymore. Yeah my name is Sienna-sort of. My real full name is Burnt Sienna Brown,” said Burnt. Everyone gasped as she pulled off her blonde wig, revealing her long brown hair.
Actually,Denise, the most popular girl in school still paid a little attention to her. Charlotte, another popular was still one of her best friends. Unfortunately, Burnt never regained Celia’s friendship. Celia said thanks to Burnt and that was it. Yeah, Burnt still had friends, but she wished Celia was one of them.
