• Escaray

I walk into the room and there she sits upon the bed, her hands in her lap. She is the most beautiful creature I have ever seen after the change. None have the beauty and grace that she carries. She looks at me motions to the chair across the room. I walk quietly and take the chair and place it about 5 feet in front of her and take a seat. “How are you feeling?”

“Much better, thanks for asking. I have questions.” A stern look had taken her face.

“I know you do. I know you have many questions and I will answer all that I am capable of.” I hear her questions in my head and I listen to her put them together before she speaks them aloud.

“First of all, I want to know…”

“My name is Escaray.” I cut her off. “Oh, excuse me. I did not mean to interrupt. I can hear your questions in my mind.”

“Yeah, about that, how is that possible?”

“When you are first turned in to a vampire you are to visit Lady Shadow who is the oldest of our kind. She has unspeakable power and grants the worthy gifts. She granted me with the gift to telepathy. You are to visit her within the week you awake. I will take you to see her when you are at full strength.”

“What if I don’t want to be a vampire? Can she change me back?”

“I’m sorry but that is not possible. The change is permanent. Your whole life is changed forever and eternity.” Sadness spreads through her thoughts and they pain me. She thinks of her family and her friends. Her life. “You will not be able to see them ever again. You were pronounced dead a few days ago. I am terribly sorry but they would not accept you for what you are. You have changed more than you think. Your appearances are not what they used to be.” Tears start to fall. Damn these tears. I hear her think. She wipes them away in anger.

“Where will I go? Where will I live? How am I to live like this?” Her questions flood from her mind to mine and it’s almost unbearable. I run my fingers through my hair.

“Please quiet your thoughts.” The flood slows a bit till I gain control and put up a barrier blocking her thoughts.

    “Sorry.” She mumbles.

“Quite alright, my dear. Now, do you think you will be able to visit Lady Shadow tomorrow?”

    “I…I guess so…”

“Good then we shall pack and get a good night’s rest. There is a case under the bed and you may fill it with anything you like that is contained in the drawers and closets. They are yours to keep.”

“But they must be so expensive.” She’s so thoughtful. She doesn’t like gifts.

“Rather unusual you are my dear, but yes, they are yours. Don’t fret. Pack your things and go to sleep. I will awake you tomorrow morning.”

“I can go into the sun?” Her face utterly puzzled.

“Despite legend, yes we are permitted to walk into the sun. Although no longer than three hours or we start to burn inexplicably.”

“Oh. OK. Goodnight.” She stands from the bed and bends down and pulls the case from under her bed. I notice a mark upon her lower back. A tribal mark that was very intricate in design. I could not see all of it. I search her thoughts for any memory of it and she stops. She turns and looks at me.

“Please stay out of my mind.” She says very calmly and respectfully.

“Please forgive me. I shall not invade you again.”

“Thank you.” I turn to leave. She had no memory of the mark, but it seemed slightly familiar to me. I have seen it before somewhere. I cannot fully remember where but maybe my library will have something of it.

    . . .

I walk into my library and grab a history book written by a vampire named Kamenwati meaning “Dark Rebel”. He wasn’t much of a rebel but he was very dark and after he researched the vampire history it is said he went mad with some sickness and in his sickness wrote many dark and twisted novels. There were depictions of people of high nobility in this history book and was the most accurate of any written. It was over 15 thousand years old. Passed down from father to son for many generations in my family, I had learned how they kept it so intact for so many years. I turned to the first page with a depiction of Lady Shadow. I looked at her, scrutinizing her body looking for any marks. I know I’ve seen it somewhere on someone but I don’t remember who. I flipped through a few more depictions of Lady Shadow and noticed something I didn’t before. Hmm…she always has the right shoulder of her dress hanging off. Is there something there?

I searched through my own memories of Lady Shadow. I haven’t seen her in many years. Since I first changed was the last. I sat down to gather my thoughts of the memory. It was a bit fuzzy but the more I focused the clearer it became.

I’m a bit skittish as my sire ushered me into the room. I was only three days old from when I was turned. I heard a powerful but somehow caring voice call out to me.

“My dear child, come to me. I wish to look upon thee in the light.” The voice sounded very wise and I hesitated as I realized it was a woman who called my name in the next moment. “You have reason to fear my child, but trust me, I shall not hurt thee. I shall reveal myself it makes you feel safer.” She paused, “I see that it does. I shall step forward child. Prepare thyself.”

The moment she walked into the glow of the dim lights I gasped at her beauty. She had long wavy blonde hair that would probably have dragged the floor if she hadn’t had some of it pulled up in dizzying designs so that it hung just at the back of her knees. Her eyes were a deep blue and them dim glow caused the gold flecks to jump out at you. She was about 5’10” give or take. He skin looked so pale and delicate. I wanted to feel the skin just to feel the softness it looked to hold. She wore a deep red, russet color I would say, dress that showed of her slim figure but in a graceful and not slutty way. Her right shoulder was bare as the one shoulder dress complimented her shoulders and neck.

I moved into the light also and took her outstretched hand.

“Good my child. Now allow me to have a look at thee. Please, look into my eyes.” I slowly looked up into the deep golden blue eyes and I immediately felt drawn to her. She had such a loving and motherly look. My own mother hand abandoned me when she found that I had changed. I felt the urge to wrap my arms around her and I didn’t care how old I was. I was 19 then.

“Yes, thy soul reaches out to me. You want me to be thy mother. Well child, that I cannot be but thee are still my child all the same. I present thee with the gift of telepathy.” With that she brought her fingers up to my face and with her long nails traced a figure upon my forehead and said, “Benedico questo bambino col regalo di telepatia.”*

A sudden surge of thoughts from all around the room flooded into my head and I dropped to my knees covering my ears screaming, “MAKE THEM STOP! MAKE THEM GO AWAY!”

Just as suddenly as they came, they stopped. I closed my eyes and explored my own mind. Finding things I thought that I had long forgotten but had only stored away out of normal reach. The gift had removed the covering hiding away all my lost memories. The variance was amazing. I looked up at Lady Shadow.

“I have placed a barrier around thy thoughts. Over time the barrier will slowly lower itself allowing thee to familiarize thyself with the flow of thoughts and also to build thyself barriers of your own.”

She grabbed my hands and helped me from the floor. Then I heard her voice.
“Dear child I have blessed thee with a special gift. Please use it wisely. Do not allow thyself to fall unto the temptation of the world and abuse thy wonderful gift. I foresee greatness in thee, though I shall not reveal thy fate, believe me.”

Then I realized as I looked at her face that she had not spoken at all.

“I can hear your words in my head!” She chuckled then kissed me upon my forehead and turned to leave.

There on her right shoulder was the same exact design!
