• Darkness is all around me. I find myself surrounded by an endless sky of black. There are no stars. There is no moon. The black sky alights as a white light flashes on behind me. I turn to see the source of this alien light, and am shocked to see a large, blue trimmed portal open a few metres away. I cautiously edge closer to the strange portal and try and look within in. The portal looks as if it is a flat sheet of white light, you can see nothing within it. I am so close I could reach out and touch the midnight blue trimming when I hear the familiar screams of agony. Forgetting the portal, I spin on the spot, making myself momentarily dizzy. My head clears and I look up. I gasp and my stomach clenches. My body gets ready to puke but there is nothing in my stomach to come up. I start violently gagging, my minds immediate re-action to the sight before me. Lying, at least 10 metres away, are my parent’s bodies, stomachs torn out and shredded, throats ripped open and gushing. They lie in a pool of scarlet blood. On top of my mother a gruesome monster starts to feed of her ear. The monster is a mass of mangled skin and puss. As it walks bits of the skin stick to the floor and get left behind, only for more to grow in its place. Its colour is a mix of purple and green, getting darker as it travels down. Massive claws are placed on the end of its hand, which it uses to rip and tear its victim’s bodies. I cannot see its face and I doubt if I had the chance I’d take it. I hear a deep growling in the distance and for the third time in the space of this time I turned to see what horrific surprise awaits me. Dozens upon dozens of monsters were advancing toward me. I scream, alerting my presence to the feeding monster. I start to run but the monster, discarding my parent’s bodies, starts to give chase. Even with the added speed my fear gives me it is nothing compared to that of the monster. It is on me within mere seconds, holding me tightly in its grip. I am dragged to the floor, where the monster bounces on top of me. I start to struggle and the monster loses its grip. I thrash me arms and legs wildly. My fist connects with the side of the beasts face, and it stumbles off and away from me. I scrabble to my feet and take a few steps only to fall down again. I have tripped over something solid and I look down at my feet to see what it is. My brothers body lies there, white and stone like. Dead. Suddenly his eyes opened and he lunges toward me. I scream again.
Something hard connects with my body and I jolt out of my nightmare. I am on the floor of my room, nurses frantically scurrying around me. I feel relieved to be safe from the monsters. I close my eyes for a few seconds. When they re-open the nurses are gone replaced by the blood thirsty beasts from my nightmare. I scream and thrash, just as I had before, but it is no good. The monsters have my arms and legs pinned down and they are too strong for me to shake away. I look at the nearest monster, the one on my right holding my arm down, and see saliva drip down its chin. A deep hunger lies within its eyes and, for a moment, I find myself absolutely terrified. The metal door slams open distracting both me and the monster. I look over and see a shadow, darker than night its self, stood in the door way. It has no clear face and just a mist around the bottom of its legs. In its hand it holds a sharp, rusted dagger. It walks over to me with a super human speed and when it is close enough it drives the dagger into my stomach. Pain bursts in every nerve in my body and white stars start to dance in my vision. I feel the blood leaving my body, escaping through the wound. My eyelids start to droop and the last thing that goes through my mind is ‘I’m dead for sure now.’ I fall into an endless deep slumber, into the waiting arms of the hungry monsters of the night.
