• When everyone was asleep, I made my way to the stream wanting to feel the cool water on the tips of my toes. I had been off my feet all day and needed to stretch them. The watch guard nodded in my direction, aware of my nightly routine.

I don't sleep. I haven't slept a wink since the day it all ended. My whole family and neighbors and friends were killed in the explosion, but I was lucky enough to be messing around in the underground tunnels instead of going to school. I was devastated to surface and see the destruction before me. But I wasn't the last, there was a group of survivors who lived underground and took me in, one of them a doctor.

But being the only female who still was fertile, I was named the "official breeder." Gotta do my duty to re-populate the earth. Now I live a life of luxury on my back! *gag*

I reached the streams edge and sat on the cold stone, dipping my toes in the cold crisp water. Beneath the streets, the stream ran clear and amazed me. I never thought I'd get to see drinkable stream water in my lifetime.

I looked around me to see if anyone was watching and decided I couldn't resist the temptation anymore. A few minutes wouldn't hurt anyone. I submerged myself into the cool water, going under. The fake stars and moon that our group set up was more believable beneath the surface.

It was quiet in this place and left me time to think. It was a time where I could reflect on all that at happened. I don't know why I didn't die. I breathed the polluted air just like the rest of my family. If nothing else, I should have died over time. But all I got was the flu and I was fine. Lucky me, living to see this...

I wanted to be one of the fighters. I wanted to go explore the surface world with the others and hunt down the mutants, but my duty was here, waiting to get pregnant.

I want to see the surface again just once. To see if there are any others out there. To prove we're not alone...
