Five Hundred Balloons Part 2
-
Uncle Carl picked me up in his Mercedes. I had somehow managed to have been removed from the school cafeteria's giant dumpster and into the nurse's office. There the nurse did a ton of unnecessary stuff and sent me to the main office to wait for my ride. Uncle Carl showed up, angry to have been called during his work-day, and having a heated coversation with an employee via Bluetooth.
"Got dumped in the trash?" he finally asked as soon as we were situated in his car. He had to spread a beach towel over the seat so I wouldn't smear ketchup and mayonaise onto his seats.
"Yes", I nodded, staring out the window. Just the thought of it made my cheeks turn crimson.
"Yeah, that happens all the time. Don't worry about it", he said, although I found it highly unlikely that seniors often go around dangling sophomores over trash cans. I couldn't believe that I couldn't get any sympathy from him. "Well, Isa and Lucy told me that they didn't know anything about it, so don't get on their case, Mitch".
"I don't blame them", I muttered, although I knew deep inside that they were the masterminds behind this rather unfortunate incident.
"Just checking", he said, pulling up in front of their mansion. "I need to fly. Henrietta's upstairs preparing a bath for you".
"Who?"
"Henrietta. Our maid".
"Oh, okay, see you", I said and walked towards the enormous house. These kinds of houses were only in fairy-tales. These people they call my relatives must be somehow connected with the Queen of England to afford all this.
Inside, there were two staircases. I wasn't sure which one to take so I closed my eyes, spun in a couple circles, and ascended whichever one my finger landed on. I could hear sweet singing coming from a room at the end of the hall. Henrietta - was that her name?
"Hello?" I called, entering the bathroom, which could've been large enough to fit a king size bed in there along with a ping-pong table and full-scale vanity.
"Ah, miss Mitchelle. Your bath it ready", said the tall red-headed woman. She wore a short light blue dress and matching white gloves and slippers.
"Thank you", I said, stepping closer to the tub. I could smell the bath fragrances from six feet away. Henrietta stood there expectantly, as if waiting to be offered a tip. "Um... you're dismissed".
Henrietta curtsied and left the room. I quickly undressed and lay down in the tub. I could feel all my worries flowing away with the rippling water. Isa and Lucy weren't that bad. I could get used to them, no problem. So what? This was nothing. No one will remember tomorrow. It'll blow over and people will accept me and won't treat my like a fool. Right?
