• "Wake up, Alessandra!" my sister charged into our joint bedroom. "The army has arrived!"
This caused me to sit up in panic. "But we haven't prepared our soldiers for them!" I cried out as I grabbed my ring blade. "They'll accept me this year! I know it!" I smiled as I pulled on my dress as it caught on my elfish ears. "I need to make a difference Leliana! If I can't join, I don't know what I'd do." I grabbed my ring blade hastily, knocking some things off of their holders.
I charged outside, proudly and strongly. I began to look around and could tell they were here. The blacksmiths were already forging, the taverns and inns were already opening, and many a horses crowded the stables. Leliana ran out after me.
"You're just like Father! Hardheaded, but still sensible enough for change." She smiled as she clasped something around my neck. "Mother's locket." She explained, holding it with sadness. She quickly looked up and reformed her pose, looking down respectively. I turned and came face to face with a tall, middle-aged man. He had a worn face and had a serious expression.
"Well, if it isn't Reanor's girls. Still as feisty as a fox, I see, Alessa." His face suddenly lit up as he leaned down for a hug. "Uncle!" Leliana and I leaped at his tall silhouette for a hug. "I didn't recognize you!" I pulled back to examine him. He had a rough beard and he seemed leaner than before. "I hear my little fox wants to join the army." He turned serious once more. "I cannot stop you, that I know. If you wish to try, our general's hut is at the north most part of camp. " I stood for a moment of shock, then hugged him once more. "Thank you so much, Uncle." I ran off, almost galloping towards the hut. This year, I would be able to help make a change. I had just turned twenty, old enough to join the army's ranks. Our Father had always asked us not to join it, but I never had listened to him. He was off somewhere, fighting for our safety. Why shouldn't I? I made it to his hut and composed myself. I swung my ring blade onto my back and cleared my throat. I heard shuffling from inside and suddenly stood taller. A minute later, a man pushed his way out of the hut. I was so surprised, I took a step back. "My name is General Ambres. How may I help you?" He was young. Probably just my age. He had dark black hair with dark eyes. I had to admit, he was far more handsome than the men of my camp. I cleared my throat once more, and squeaked out a mere, "Hello. I'm Alessandra. I would like to join the army." He looked me up and down. "Are you capable in battle?" he asked at last. I let out a relieved sigh and straightened up. "Yes, Sir. I can take most of the men here." I smiled. "Then you will fight me. If you can stay unharmed for a set amount of time, You can join us." He smiled and went back to his tent. I stood there, stunned. I was this close to joining. I wouldn't let anyone get in my way.
