• I clenched the handle of my suitcase, my knuckles turning white with force. The backpack felt like it was one-hundred pounds slung across my shoulder.
“Well,” David sighed, “this is it squirt.” He ruffled my hair. He picked up a large brown box and nudged me forward. But I didn’t want to go forward. I hesitantly enforced myself to take a step forward.
    “Nervous?” laughed David.
    “Y-yes,” I barely choked.
He gave a half-hearted laugh, “Well I’m nervous too. After this I’m off to college, where the rest of my life is going to start. It’s just boarding school for you, Hai.” I smiled, I guess he was right. It’s not like my time here is going to set the rest of my life. He grabbed my hand, leading me through the glass door.
“Hello,” A woman in a brown suit stepped up to us. A smile with light pink lips was stretched across her beaming face. “I’m Mrs. Gonzales, the principal here at St. Uriel’s,” she reached into a white box, pulling out a paper book. “This is the school handbook,” she said flipping through a binder, “what is your name, darling?”
“Hai Gao,” I whispered. My heart sank at the sound of my own name. I distracted my mind by scanning the pages of the book. The words flew past my eyes. Some bold, underlined, some a deep set blue.
“Here, this is your class schedule and dorm number.” I stared at the paper, printed in black ink were a few words that planned out everything.
    Gao, Hai.
    Dorm number 113.
“Look at that,” David said pointing at the white paper. “You’re in English 1.” I peered down, it was true. Since my mother’s death, my grades had fallen; I hadn’t been expecting an honor’s class to appear before me. Everything else was just a blur, but those two words.
“Come on,” he whispered, “let’s go find your room.” He carefully grabbed my arm, guiding me. We walked out the door, David holding on to the white sheet, me holding on to my emotions that were slipping from my grasp. Everything was just moving so fast. I could barely comprehend the fast past world that was gliding past my face.
