• It all started on the shores of England about 2500 years ago. I was just a young man preparing for an expedition to find new land with my uncle, Christopher. Back then, however, I was known as Miles Columbus.
On the day of the launch, I decided to come to a cavern I had found a few miles along the shore. When I made it there, I saw something glowing under the sand of the tide pools. It was an orb: a ball of some sort. When I touched it, I suddenly felt a strange tingling sensation. It felt warm, but at the same time, it sent a chill down my spine. I suddenly looked at the time and realized that my uncle’s ship was supposed to depart in a half hour! I rushed back to the docks as quickly as I could, forgetting that the odd-looking sphere was even in my hand. When I got there, I showed it to my uncle, and he said that I was turning into a true adventurer.
By the time we had left, I was already in my quarters, observing and admiring my discovery. It gleamed and shimmered like the ocean’s beauty itself. I was both intrigued and mesmerized at the sight of it. I finally snapped out of my daze when my uncle called me up to the ship’s main deck to help him steer through a deadly storm. However, as soon as I got up to the balcony, I was swept off of the ship by a wave.
When I was under the currents, struggling with all my might just to survive, I slowly lost consciousness. Just as I was about to give up all hope and my life, I thought to myself, “I really wish that I could somehow survive this and live to see my family again.” With that, as if by command, the orb in my pocket, the one that I knew had some sort of mystical power, began to glow brighter than anything I had ever seen before. For some strange reason, I was glowing too. I felt the tingling sensation from earlier, but this time, it was my entire body. It felt as though all of my insides were rearranging, it felt like I was missing some things. My legs were gone, only to be replaced by some sort of green fish’s tail! However, when this occurred, I could suddenly breathe again. Not only that, but when I tried to kick what was previously a pair of legs, the tail swished in the water, carrying me like my legs would on land. But that’s not even the weirdest part. For some strange reason, all of this felt completely natural to me, and I actually liked it!
Once I had finally caught back up with my uncle, he had found this new land and it seemed more vast and bountiful than we had ever imagined. We decided to go back to our village and gather the rest of our family and live our lives here and prosper. As the years went by, I noticed the world changing around me. My family had learned to accept my new body, but for some strange reason, I remained eternally young. My family eventually grew too old and died, at which point the remaining villagers had labeled me as “The Terrible Ailment of an Imp” and drove me away into the ocean. By the time I had found out that the orb, which I now called “the soul globe,” could have granted them eternal life as well, it was obviously too late. I was alone in the world, no one who would accept me as anything but a freak.
I was too much of a freak to survive on dry land, and too human to be near any other ocean-dwellers. The only thing I had left was The Soul Globe. Everything else had been taken from me centuries ago.
