• Being a catholic girl in a different world is so hard. Going to a private school, having to go to mass every Friday with my school, celebrating Christmas with the presents last, and being the baby of the family is hard on a girl. Going more in depth on the whole baby of the family, I’m 13 and still the youngest one! Even though my dog was born after me, he ages seven years on his birthday. It seems that right when you catch up to him, he ages in a matter of seconds! My brother (Which is a different story all in itself, which we will get to quite soon) is 18 and is going to college next year. I guess I should be happy… with him going to college and all. I’ll be able to use his room whenever I want! Whether it’s to do my homework in his desk or watching T.V on his nice flat screen, he can’t do any wrong in leavening me. Oh by the way, since I didn’t mention this at the beginning of the story, I’m Davie. Weird name I know but I can’t help it, it’s just my name. So as every Friday, we are planning to leave for school, which is when we go to mass. Wearing my Khaki pants and my green shirt with the school logo on it, I head off for school. What could this day possibly bring?
When approaching the church parking lot, I notice my Brother Nick practically sitting on the hood of his car. It’s weird that he is here because he has high school to attend. “What’s going on Nick?” I ask as I sneak up behind him. He yells as if I startled him, or if he didn’t know I was coming, even if I know he did. It’s like he has some sort of power that lets him know if someone’s behind him. It’s really scary sometimes. “Did you study for your history test today? Its reallllly important you know about the…...”, after that I kind of zoned out. My friend Laila just walked by and waved at me to follow her. I ran towards her as Nick call out to me, “Be warned! They are coming for you!” whatever that means.
As my besty Laila and I were walking toward the church, there was a man who looked like a judge standing at the door. He was asking people the same question, “Can you recite the Lord’s prayer?” Of course I can, but I thought I would get a kick out of saying no and moving on. Laila did the prayer without even one hesitation. I, on the other hand, just walked right past him when he asked me if I knew the Lord’s Prayer. He pulled me by the arm and asked me again, to recite the prayer. I refused. “I now, with the power invested in me, declare you as a WITCH!” After that everything was kind of a blur. I just remember waking up in a jail cell, with a massive headache. This girl, a girl with ratty black hair and even rattier clothes, leaned over me. She was about the same age as me. “Helllllloooooo?” she called out above my face. “What the...?” I yelled as I sat up. “Good, you’re alive. I didn’t want to bunk with a dead person for the last few days of my life.” She said nonchalantly with a little hint of a shrug. This made me freak out. “You say last few days like you just got a C+ on a test! Why are we even in here?” I asked. “Hello. What’s your name? Mine is Ruth, not that it matters.” She replied like she didn’t even here my question. My answer to her question wasn’t as calm “Davie, so am I gonna die to?” “Only if you’re lucky” Ruth replied.
“So we shared a trial? And we both were sentenced?” I ask Ruth as she braids my hair; there really is nothing to do when you are sitting in a jail cell. “Yes, sad really. You were so nervous you forgot the Lord’s prayer!” she explained to me why we were sentenced, her because she was seen wandering around the woods (she is actually a good painter and wanted to paint the landscape), and me because I refused to say the Lord’s prayer. Ruth also explained that we were going to get hung in four days. Talk about a downer to your week! It all sounded familiar, with the whole judge guy asking the questions, sitting in jail for ridiculous accusations, and getting hung, OH MY GOSH! This is what we were taking a test on in history! Nick was warning me! I really need to listen to him more.
After I told Ruth all about what was happening, I had to think of a plan to get out of here. I mean, I just can’t die in here, I’m only 13! Ruth, not believing me at all, just went along with everything I said. She just nodded and replied to everything with, “yes, I understand.” Or, “I’m sure that will work!” Even though she thought I was a total ignoramus (her words, not mine), I thought it was a pretty good plan. We would go on as planned, get ready to be hung, then right when it was about to happen, I’ll pull out my cell phone, which surprisingly I had in my pocket, and I would mesmerize them with my future device. It was a WONDERFUL plan! Who would kill someone who could tell the future? I sure wouldn’t.
After a week of starvation and unnecessary work, it was finally our turn to be hung. I know I say that like its nothing, but at the time when we got out of our cell, I was happy. With my phone in my hidden pocket, we waited to be escorted out. Then it hit me, why, if they were hanging someone, would they leave their hands untied? They could have a weapon or even hit the guard and run away. Oh no, this isn’t going to end well. As they tie Ruth and some other girl’s hands, I think of how this will work. I can’t let them die; Ruth has been a good friend and a good story teller. She was the one who helped me understand how my hanging came to be! And to think I’m only here because I refused to say a prayer to my Lord? How could I be so stubborn? I could have just avoided this all if I listened to Nick! The sun is hot and the crowed is large. We haven’t been out in the sun in a week. It’s so hot and blinding, I run into Ruth, who stopped in front of me just next to the ropes. I can’t let this happen! We step up on our stools and put our heads in the ropes. Im crying so hard yelling, pleading to anyone who is listening, “ You can’t do this! I’m from the future! I can tell you how this will end!” The guard closest to me practically spits,” If you can tell us the future, you are definitely a witch.” The girl next to Ruth is now dangling; it’s only a matter of seconds before she is unconscious. Ruth’s next, even though I wish it was me. I beg them not to do it. Asked them to kill me first, so I can welcome her into heaven. Cry so hard that my eyes run out of tears. But then the crowed stops cheering, the guards look at each other, and tell me to repeat my last sentence. “Kill me first, so I can welcome her into heaven!” I yell on the top of my lungs. They huddle in a corner talking and arguing. They look at Ruth, then to me. “We shall let you both go, on the account that you stay out of the woods, and you,” They say, pointing to me “, recite the Lord’s Prayer.” As fast as I can, I belt it out. Crying tears of joy. We are safe! I really did it! Once I finished the prayer, they let us go. “What changed your mind? Why was that last sentence important?” I ask as they let us down. “No witch wants to go to heaven.” The head guard says in reply. Ruth runs toward me, jumps in the air, and lands on top of me in a hug. The thing is, I haven’t had food or water in a week, so I’m really weak. I slip on the sidewalk and fall. The next thing I know, I’m laying in a church pew with Ruth standing over me. “Gosh Ruth, why did you jump on me like that?” I ask Ruth while sitting up. “Ruth? Wow you must have hit your head really hard! I’m Laila, you best friend. Like, ever.” She says with surprise. “What, happened? I just saved your life, well, Ruth’s life.” I say rubbing my head. “You slipped, that sweet old man just tried to shake your hand and you freaked.” It all made sense! Thank you god Thank you Nick, for helping me! Thank you Ruth, for teaching me what real friendship is all about!
