• Carefully stepping over the other mangled bodies , Charles is determined to find her. He searches among the screaming wounded, but does not see her , so he continues on. With a heavy heart the soldier prays that his beloved Luisa is alive and well, though in his heart he already knows otherwise. With pain filled steps he manages to arrive at a mass grave. He falls to his knees, when he recognizes a single flash of white skin among the bloody corpses. He pulls the corpse from out under another and pulls the body to him. He runs his fingers along the slight curve of her cheek, and the blood that has dried around her mouth and on her blouse. A tear slides down his cheek, but he does not notice. He , instead, clings to her body. His body begins to shake as moans of pain escape his desperate lips. Luisa , his beloved, was indeed dead. He reached down to touch the chain around her neck. He pulled on it and at the end discovered a simple ring. She had always promised to be there for him, and he had promised to come home safe and that they would live a happy life together. What a silly thing. Promises we cant always keep.
