If men were dreams and not but
    Dust and a fairy mean
To an end with what is not but
    All of what it seems
    -
Then maybe we would all slumber
In peace for a while or so
And imagine that we were one number
With hearts lined up in a row-
And our feelings, they would show,
And our souls, we would know-
And our souls, they wouldn’t encumber
Us as they fluttered and flowed
    -
If the stars, they didn’t descend to
The ground in a flurry of light
Leaving the moon to pine and to shine through
The dark on the blackest of nights
    -
Then maybe we would all tremble
    In awe and in piety
That the stars, which we so resemble
Should sink down below our knees
Should piteously split at the seems
And fade in a rumble so primal
That we, in terror would scream
And crumble to ember and dreams
