Things have changed on Pern. When AIVAS first gave the dragonriders the plan to destroy Thread, he had made a mistake. When he realized how great a mistake it was, he terminated himself. In actuality, the Red Star hd not brought Thread; it was blocking the full force of Thread, and had been for thousands of years. Now, Thread falls differently. Intervals are 100 Turns; Passes are 100 Turns. Falls last for seven hours and occur at least every week.

The Weyrs were devastated during the First Fall. Several thousand dragons and riders died, leaving only a few to combat the menace. By the end of the Pass, only two queens, 20 bronzes, eight browns, 15 blues, and 40 greens remained. People began to refer to that as the First Pass.

Now it is nearing the Second Pass. With nine queens in the Weyrs, only one being a junior queen, and relatively few supporting dragons, the eight Weyrleaders (of Benden, Telgat, High Reaches, Igen, Ista, Fort, Southern, and Eastern) decided to send the one junior queen to find a site for new Weyr. When she found one, it was deemed Ieirne Weyr, for the island it was situated on. The dragons that hatched in the same clutch were transferred to the new Weyr. In a few weeks, the queen, Mith, was flown by bronze Cadeth. The riders, Lina and M'gor, became the Weyr's leaders. Mith's clutch of 50 eggs sat hardening on the Hatching Sands, with two queen eggs rolled between the senior queen's forelegs. When the eggs hatched, the dragonets and the two newly hatched queens were Impressed by the waiting candidates.

Two Turns later, a new batch of candidates are being flown to the Weyr. The once baby-ish and awkward dragonets have now outgrown the weyrling barracks and been moved to their own quarters. The entire Weyr is training for Threadfall, which is rumored to be coming sometime in the near future. But as the Star Stones are no longer accurate judges of Thread's return, the dragonriders must be constantly vigilant.
