You say it 'just happens', I call it poor organization on the part of whoever's making the cards. xD Like I'll bet you that whoever made the card where Guardromon is a Data-type (I'm assuming it's a card, at least) didn't check Guardromon's attribute and put him down as what he looks like-- apparently that person thought data-type. This happens a lot, with guys like Ninjamon and other guys that people just don't keep track of...

Of course, there are the instances where new forms are created on purpose, like the Togemon you're referring to. (Virus Togemon is the one that's dressed up sort of like Ponchomon, right?) So yeah, a lot of them are intentional and I get that, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are a few organizational errors on the part of Bandai... and to be fair, I don't know that for a fact, but given that they can sometimes be a little sloppy with translations and stuff, I wouldn't put it past them.

Here we go again... sweatdrop Digimon aren't set creatures, they are subject to change. This can apply to both their typing as well as for what they digivolve into. To limit them in such away takes away what they are, programs that are subject to random mutations in their code. Taking that away and restricting their free flowing randomness makes them... pokemon >.<

All right, all right, point taken.
The way I prefer to think of it is that each individual of a particular Digimon species might have its own potential set of 'genetics' that cause it to have different traits or Digivolutions than other members of the same Digimon species. Like for instance, my Betamon apparently has some kind of machine genes because he Digivolved into Guardromon I guess LOL. xD

Yeah, you're right about that I guess... I suppose that's just the way my brain tries to analyze things. I like rigidity I suppose, LOL.
