I'm sure that there are many other women out there who have to multitask. For instance, my mom always grades papers (she's a 2nd grade teacher) while watching tv or movies. And, when she's not grading papers, she actually reads books while watching tv and movies! @_@ I don't know how she does it, but I have no desire to try. I like reading in nice quiet areas where no one will bother me. I never do anything else when I am on the computer (unless it's laundry), but I always do something while watching tv. The difference lies in the simple fact that being on the computer requires tying and using my fingers whereas watching tv does not.

I don't need quiet to concentrate unless the book is extremely dry, scholarly, and boring! But pleasure reading? I can read in the living room with the TV on. Yesterday, my parents were watching NCIS reruns, and I was reading a Danielle Steel book called Matters of the Heart. It was really good, and I wanted to finish it!! blaugh

Did you know that Danielle Steel is a card in Apples to Apples? rofl

Even when it's low level pleasure reading, I need peace and quiet. If it's quiet, I can suck my head into the story and forget all about what's going on in the outside world. I get really, really absorbed in books, and literally forget that I'm reading words. That's why I probably laugh, squeal, giggle, gasp, kick the bed, etc while reading. When someone says something to me, or when I hear a noise louder than the hum of the fan, it breaks the almost trance-like state I'm in. Then, I have to read a couple more pages to get sucked in again. Also, when I read, I hear the dialogue in my head in just about real time. I don't speed read or anything. It's kind of like a movie reel playing in my brain. It all seems so real for a while. When I'm reading about somewhere that's cold, I get cold. If the characters are hungry, I get hungry. It's subtleties like those that make me almost physically experience the stories. That's how I read anyway. heart

Btw, did you ever finish reading Twilight? What did you think of it?

Woohoo, so who else can say they did the chicken dance with a cop on stage?

not me! Although... I did do a chicken dance at a wedding one time with someone who later became a cop rofl

@Chibi - how fantastic that you can experience books in such a visceral way! I can get very absorbed in a book as well but usually not quite to that extreme. Also for me, being able to find that much quiet while reading is near impossible. I've learned to block out noise pretty well though.

Forgive me for just randomly jumping in I'm new to the guild, but I HAVE to multitask.. as a college student.. I find myself messing around on here, and doing papers for college at the same time and researching stuff, and listening to music (while at college :p) because my laptop at home the battery has died unfortunatly.. sad

Welcome Grendle! xd It's great to have you here! You did the right thing by just randomly jumping in. Now you are one of us.... one of us..... rofl I recently graduated from college, so I know what you mean. When I was working on my senior seminar paper, I would type for a while, look through my hundreds of pages of notes, and then get on Gaia and complain about my paper. rofl Somehow, it relieved a bit of tension for me so I could work on my paper a bit longer. Oh! And I wrote an enormous amount of papers while listening to Eiffel 65. I mean, who can fall asleep at the computer while listening to classic electronica? xd

@Camwen - I have a very hard time finding a quiet place to read. That's why I do about 90% of my reading after everyone else has gone to bed. blaugh I don't know if that's an option for you with your work schedule, but I think it's the best time of the day for quiet reading.

@Diablos - I've never done that, but I'm guessing you did. I want to hear the story! xd

@Lady Grendle: No problem; that's what you're supposed to do! Welcome to the guild! heart

Yeah, I'm a grad student and remember my college-dorm days well. I NEED my background noise! I lived on the "loud floor" in the dorm, and I got used to a lot of noise while I was studying. I have to have some kind of music or something, although sometimes I get sucked into whatever's on TV while I'm trying to study. sweatdrop

As far as my pace of reading goes...I have a form of OCD that mainly has to do with patterns, numbers, rhythm, etc. I'm constantly counting syllables in my head, and it really messes with my ability to read and actually ABSORB what I'm reading. I can't shut down that part of my mind long enough to get anything done. I really struggled the first year or so of graduate school because my professors were always telling us NOT to scan our readings, while if I try to read every word (the way my profs were telling us to read), I will literally get stuck on ONE SYLLABLE. It's pretty frustrating. So now I just completely ignore the way they tell us to read, and I scan/speed read. That's the only way I get ANYTHING out of what I'm reading. I also have to scan even the most "no-brainer" of my pleasure reading.

@Chibi: Yes, I did finish Twilight. I kind of liked it and kind of didn't.
Pros: It was entertaining, which is one of my few demands for pleasure reading.
It only cost $1.48 because I bought it at a thrift store. blaugh
Edward isn't all bad, like a lot of people make him out to be. He actually WANTS Bella to live a full life as a human being and is in no hurry to rob her of the human experiences she never had. (Unfortunately, he's very high-handed in some of this, but that's for the "cons" list.)
Bella at least has book smarts, even if she displays a shocking lack of common sense.

Cons: Oy. There are several, if I must participate in a serious debate.
-For starts, Bella just gets into trouble entirely too much, and rather than actually serving any important purpose in the story, this tendency only serves as a setup for Edward to swoop in once again and prove his physical prowess. Yawn. Once or twice in a story I can live with. After a while, though, this started to seem like a cartoon, especially towards the end. SPOILER: If Bella had just TOLD somebody--not necessarily Edward, but any of the other Cullens--about James supposedly having kidnapped her mother, they could have helped her formulate a better plan than her going alone and getting the crap beaten out of her. That there (yes, I'm from 'Bama, and I sometimes say "this here" and "that there" blaugh ) was just classic "stupid horror movie victim" behavior. Eesh!
-Edward. Despite having been around for more than a century, and seeing years of strides in how men and women treat each other, he himself has had practically NO emotional development whatsoever (other than having mostly overcome his desire to feed on human blood), and he has a very Victorian view on how to treat women. Sometimes this can be a plus--he is polite and chivalrous, in a day and age when many people (male and female) no longer feel the need for what used to be called "common courtesy." The problem is that his Victorian mindset also includes constantly underestimating his lady's intellectual and emotional abilities and even forcing her to do something she doesn't want to do (go to the prom). He's pretty controlling, to say the least. Yes, Bella has no common sense, but still, even so...if he were MY boyfriend, I think his controlling, high-handed ways would become old pretty darn fast.
-Bella has no common sense. GRRR. I get really frustrated with damsel-in-distress stories, where the hero has all the power and the heroine is practically just a decoration. As interesting and entertaining as Twilight was, I can't help but think how much more I would have enjoyed it if the pairing between Bella and Edward were a little bit more equal. As it is, he has waaay too much power and at times seems to enjoy it a little too much. THIS IS A BAD SIGN.
-I totally didn't buy the "romance" between Edward and Bella. Even he tells Bella that her feelings for him are just a crush. It reminds me of that Taylor Swift song: "When you're fifteen and someone tells you they love you, you're gonna believe them." (Yes, I know that Bella's seventeen. But she's still an adolescent and has that teenage-hormonal tendency to "fall in love" too hard and too fast.) And the whole thing about her actually almost going into physical withdrawals any time she thinks they might be separated? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a sign of codependence?

Other than those things, I thought the first book was a pretty fun little story. I really liked the creepy, foreboding atmosphere of the story, and some of the seconday characters, particularly Alice, are pretty intriguing. Bottom line: The story has pros and cons, and although I'm not a "squee-ing" fangirl, I'm not in the Anti-Twilight Legion either. wink

Oh, and one more thing: I lol'ed every time Edward tells Bella he can't read her mind. We have NO reason to actually believe this, since the entire story is told from Bella's point of view and all we have is Edward's word that this is so. Pfft. Suuuuuuure he can't read her mind. rolleyes Like I said, we have no assurance (other than his word--take that for what it's worth) that he is telling the truth. For all we know, he could be reading her thoughts the whole time and using those thoughts to draw her closer to him. It would be to his advantage, both as a vampire and as a (pretty questionable!) lover, to read Bella's thoughts and lie to her about it. Not only that, but isn't there other vamp folklore that says vampires can control other people through eye contact? Now apply this to Edward...and the whole romance thing becomes a sick scheme to get Bella to do his bidding because, poor thing, he's lonely. Yes, I know that this probably isn't true and that the whole mind-reading thing is explained away in future books, but with the story being told entirely from Bella's point of view, and with Bella being human and having no mind-reading abilities, we don't really know the true nature of Edward's abilities. We only know what he tells Bella. So if you want to make a conspiracy out of it, there's soo much material here. wink

Somehow, I had a feeling you would have that kind of reaction. rofl But, if you are going to go with the conspiracy theory that you have set, you might want to read Midnight Sun. It is the story of Twilight told from Edward's perspective. It hasn't been published yet, but the first chapter has been available for a long time. 3nodding

Don't worry about it. rofl You might not realize this, but Alvinette started reading Twilight during the convention so she could form an opinion on the constant arguments about the book. I don't think we're going to get into a big conversation about it though. 3nodding

Have you read any of them? I thought it was a cute series, but then rabid fangirls kind of ruined it for me. Then again, rabid fans tend to ruin just about everything they get their hands on. blaugh

rofl Meh, it's only a book. No worries. It was entertaining, and that's about all I was expecting, really. Yay for non-school-related reading! Sooo glad I'm working on my thesis now instead of taking classes with obscene amounts of reading assignments.
