short swords are great and i also think that they are better for defence

Don't let what Aoshi said in Rurouni Kenshin get to you, though. It's definitely harder to attack someone with a longer range than you.

i love standard katanas, there is just a feeling of strength i get from holding them un-sheathed

The swords that they use in the movies are light-as-all-hell. That's how the actors in Japanese movies do those faster-than-lightning-cuts. xp

and it is a shame about that though, i have held lots of sword and they are not light. i have a replica katana but its not weighted right, so when i just try to use it in the backyard- it is annoying. but using a properly weighted sword is like buttering bread- very easy

Sort of...but I wouldn't want to face someone with a halberd when I've got a Kodachi in my hands. xp

Well, they had to do that to ensure that they don't hurt anybody. sweatdrop

I don't know if I'll ever purchase a katana here in Sydney, I might get one when I actually live back in Indonesia though. My grandfather has a full battle armour and a sword set there... heart

indeed, a pole with a blade against a short sword, actually that would be an interesting one to see cause if you could get close quickly- the short srowd would win.

mikee's gun shop on george st in the city sell properly weighted sword and that is were i want to get one from. they have a katana in the shop which is about 3 feet long and the blade is said to be stronger and sharper than a folded katana. But because of the metal used in the blade it cost $1150 ish, i would think about buying it when i get a job and some money saved up.

Yeah, I used to live in the city. I know the place, but I sure as well won't buy anything from there... sweatdrop

My martial arts teacher knows a blacksmith somewhere in Queensland or something. He actually asked him to make some shurikens.

I forgot what the NSW law was for these things. Concealed weapons are a no-no, but carrying a non-concealed blade as long as you are in transit is legal, right?

correct, it also has to be carried in away that you cant just pull it out and hit some one on the head with it. most places that sell swords, give you a case to carry it in.
