Nicolae nodded slightly and made a little sound of agreement before he let his head rest agaisnt the back of the chair. He was wondering who was at Mayfair Manor and who Felix would meet when Antha took him there. Nicolae had gone missing when he was turned and for the few brief days he had returned afterwards he had done a very good job of hiding what he had become. He had Antha and Malakai to thank for that. Then he had vanished again and resolved never to return. He couldn't let his witch family know that he was what so many of them hated the most. He had been their golden boy no matter how much trouble he had caused and he wanted to be remembered that way. "You'll be going to Mayfair Manor soon. If you don't end up staying here then they'll probably toss you in there with the others dozen Mayfair orphans and misfits. I don't know who's there right now but remember the names I'm about to tell you. Uncle Stefan is the head of the family and oncle Julien is the family caretaker. When you throw in Antha as the Designee of the Legacy they're sort of our own little holy trinity. Besides Antha, who the Mayfair world revolves around, the mainstream Mayfairs of our generation are Malakai, Lawrence, Armand, Thorne, Volusia, Pierce, Dorian, Sera, Vittorio, Cyrus, Dolly Jean, Belle, Courtland, and Jack. They're the ones who are going to accept you whether they like you or not because we're all linked by Antha. Then there's Julien and my mother's brothers, uncle Remy and Barclay, uncle Vincent and Danny, aunt Mary Jane, Claire Marie, and Madison, grandfather Thomas and Darcy Monahan, aunt Suzette the family matchmaker, and my 'father', Michael York." He couldn't think of anyone else important so he cut the list off there. "There will be others but when you meet any of the people I just named pay special attention. They're the ones who decide your fate. But above all remember that Antha is God. No one has the power to contradict her word and as long as she likes you the cousins will like you. If she finds reason to dislike you they'll all shun you and make your life a living ******** hell in the most literal sense. And be grateful that as psychotic and temperamental as she is it takes a lot for Antha to dislike people." He rolled his head to the side so that he could watch Felix with one glassy eye. "I wonder if you're actually ready to handle what you've gotten yourself into......."

Felix listened closly to the name Nicolae said out. Memorizing each and every one. Even the little side note he added in there. Stefan, head of the family. Julien, caretaker. And the obvious and one Felix has heard the most. Antha, Designee of the Legacy. Well, he had twenty six names that Nicolae named out without faces and personalities. When ever Antha was ready, Felix guessed that they were heading out. But after what Sleet did, he couldn't guess when.
But Felix had to admit, this family was different than he thought it was going to be. Granted, he hadn't really given it much thought in the first place. But regardless, he wasn't going anywhere. When he left the guild, he said he wasn't going to run again. And even if it is to himself, Felix has never broken his word. "I guess there's only one way to find out."

+Rotting Lunacy+ For a moment, Antha just stared at him. There were others who protested Sleet's actions, who tried to make him stop. They reasoned that his treatment of Antha was irrational. Khayman threatened him with war between their covens. But none, not even Nicolae, were willing to fight him to keep her unharmed. They passed it off as she did, reminded themselves that he would not kill her and they would exact revenge anyways. Before she even thought about it, Antha kissed him. It was brief, for she withdrew when she returned to her senses, but it was not guarded or reserved like others she had given. A kiss of scalding passion. "You would kill me," she said very simply, her pale cheeks blushing nearly crimson for a few moments as she became aware of her own actions, "If you were to lay down your life merely to spare me a day of Sleet's torture, only two things could come of it. Either I would kill Sleet, effectively killing myself and every poor soul that bears Mayfair blood, or I would go entirely mad and, in all likelihood, kill myself." She touched his hand again very lightly, though this touch was not tentative. It matched the sudden and very uncommon seriousness in her eyes that for once made her look her age, older even, if not saner. "Promise me you would never do something so foolish. It would be the end of us both."
"Because it is you who asks this of me," he said, very quietly. "I would promise." But he did not let her see the thoughts drifting in his mind. It would be better to meet in the afterlife, no matter how chancy such a possibility might be, than have one of us separated. He tried to smile--or at least, the corner of his lips turned up. "But it is pointless to think on such matters, because he will destroy neither of us." The vampire said this with such absolute and common certainty that it was easy to believe such a thing was true; then, he stood and offered his arm to her. "Come. Your brother is no doubt impatient for you to join him."

Antha gave a small, plastic smile. She knew that Sleet would not kill her---he was amused by her, and Khayman had once even suggested that in his own twisted way, he loved her---but she was not so certain of Vikteren's safety. She didn't know who was the stronger of the two, and Sleet wanted Vikteren dead now. But she hid these thoughts behind the strongest barriers she could manage and merely took the arm she was offered. "I'm sure, though he seems rather amused by our new brother." Her gaze turned to him as she began towards the library, a faint shadow beneath the deep green of her eyes that promised something was worrying her. "I need to take him to Mayfair Manor now, to Uncle Stefan in particular. Do you think you could stand another evening in the presence of Oncle Julien?" It was that idea that brought a true smile to her face, the trademark wicked expression that never stayed from Antha's face for long. It vanished, however, when she came to the library doors and found them locked. It didn't take much to have them unlocked and throw them open, but she still went to Nicolae and pushed him to the floor as punishment. "Locking me out of my own library! The nerve of you!" A dramatic sigh escaped her lips as she dropped into his chair, grinning down at him. "Really, big brother, you have no consideration."

.David Talbot. He gave a little snort and looked out the window. "There was a man two generations before us named Garland Mayfair. He was the black sheep of the generation. One day he got fed up of the entire family and went to Sleet and asked to be turned. Sleet told him how witches make the best vampires so he set off on a quest to make the entire Mayfair family vampires. He thought if he could make himself coven master to us all then he could rule the city. He thought I would be the best to start with so he paid a rogue off to seduce and drug me then drag me back to him." He sighed wistfully as his eyes went distant with memories. "I was already a vampire when I woke up again. He took me out to hunt and told me of his plans. He thought he could bribe me promises that Antha would never be hurt by Sleet again. Instead I ran back to Antha and told her what had happened. We sat in the attic and talked until sunrise and she never said a word against me. She and Malakai shielded my nature from the family while I returned for a few days to say my silent goodbyes. Then I vanished again and Khayman took me in as his second in command. Inside the Mayfair family only Antha, Malakai, and you know anything about what has become of me." He was interrupted by the door opening and Antha pushing him out of the chair. He made a little cry of surprise and then laughed. "Forgive me my poppet," he begged her while he still laughed. "I know I am unworthy of your affections. I may but grovel before you and beg forgiveness." He laid his head against her knees as he spoke. Even while he still smiled his eyes turned to the vampire behind his sister and they were very easy to read. They spoke of anger of the acutest kind. It was the kind that could only be born of jealousy. They said plainly that Nicolae had not given up and never would. My territory. He said guardedly. Mine.
Vikteren looked at Nicolae, his thoughts guarded by that same smooth, emotionless expression that he so often wore. No, he said, quite placidly, his eyes flicking towards Nicolae. Hers. For Antha was no person's territory other than her own, and Nicolae belonged to her much more wholly than she did to him. Although the psychic bond between them was as thick as a wrought-iron chain, thicker than those Vikteren had felt from even twins, it did not make Antha his territory.
Then the thick scent of blood filled the air, rang through the chamber like the sound of a bell, and the vampire stiffened suddenly. The man was in a room with two vampires, and his body had chosen this moment to spit up blood? Was he suicidal? The air felt heavy, saturated with the scent. Automatically his eyes lit, like emerald candles, flickering in the deep shadows, and he drew back against the doorway.

Antha did not have the senses of a vampire, but the moment the scent of blood touched the air, the spirits alerted her in screams. Almost instantly she was up again and dashing across the room to Kain's side. She made a wall of the umbra there, trying to block the scent from the vampires as much as she could. "Kain," she said softly, laying a hand very lightly on his shoulder. Her eyes stared into his with an uncommon seriousness, a severity that said very plainly she was worried for him. If the two vampires in the room weren't so good at controlling themselves, he might already be dead. "Are you alright?" She placed her other hand beneath his own as she spoke, helping to keep the blood from slipping through and barring a little more of the scent from the rest of the room. Nicolae, she called to him wordlessly, her eyes still focused wholly on Kain, as if he might break if she so much as glanced away, Take Vikteren and leave the room. Now. They had discovered once, long ago, that his own will was not so strong in matters such as these, but Antha's power as the Designee of the Legacy still affected him, and he did not have it in him to disobey her, no matter how out of his own senses he might be.
