Gren shrugged. "It's a free kitchen, so long as you're not eating every single things or leaving a mess."

Aravilui smiled, then leaned back thoughtfully. "Hm... what story to tell... There is always the great legends of the past..."

His eyes narrowed mischievously. "No, I think not. How about something I myself witnessed? I was only a small child at the time, but thinking back on it, it is still quite amusing. Tell me, has this realm perhaps heard of the Fellowship of the Ring?"

Gren smiled knowingly, and nodded. "We have...a brave journey, that. Have you met the Fellowship?" he asked, already eager.

Aravilui laughed. "Only two members. Legolas is my cousin, actually. ...Er, it is slightly more complicated than that. I was his mother's first cousin, so I think the term is... first cousin once removed? Anyway, I was five years old at the end of the War of the Ring, so that I remember little of."

He tilted his head to the side slightly, smiling in a fond reminiscent sort of way. "I was eight years old when I first met Gimli. I had just lost my mother, which is a story of its own and is not important here. However, it came that Legolas and Gimli visited right after that, and my father asked that Legolas could perhaps help me recover from that loss. If you think I am reticent now..."

He shook his head, chuckling slightly. The only reason he was willing to talk so much right now was he was tired, anyway. Besides, Gren was nice, and Aravilui thought perhaps the young man who was trying so hard to hide his eavesdropping could use a good story as well. "Of course, Legolas being the kind soul he is agreed. I think I tried to blow out his ear drum the first time Ada left me alone with him. I am amazed he put up with me for even that long, honestly. Having a child wailing in your ear is enough to test the patience of the best of us."

"Oh, wow..." he breathed amazement, stories coming to life in his mind.

He listened carefully to the tale, blinking here and there, taking it in. He chuckled a bit at the comment about wailing children. "That it can be...but he's been through worse, I've heard."

"Not according to him. But then, Legolas is a warrior. He might not agree now, but he sailed thirty years ago, so it is a little difficult to speak with him anyway."

Aravilui shrugged slightly. "In any case, he decided that the novelty of me meeting my first non-Elf might help with my shyness. He was... well, when it came to Gimli he was quite right. I was fascinated by his beard. Well, and his height, since I obviously had never seen an adult my size. The first thing I did was tug on his beard, of course."

He laughed softly, smiling again and leaning back slightly. "Gimli asked why I was so fascinated, and Legolas was just completely off-hand. As I recall, he told Gimli that I have never seen such a short person before. What were his exact words..."

Looking up at the ceiling thoughtfully, he rested a finger on his lips. "Ah, I remember. He said 'Well, he's never seen a midget before, after all. Especially one trying to impersonate an ill-kempt bear.' It was lucky we were outside with that little comment."

Aravilui laughed, shaking his head at the memory. "Gimli rather calmly removed my hand from his beard, picked up his axe and started chasing my cousin. 'I'll show you midget and ill-kempt, you beanpole. Get over here, I'll cut you down to a proper size!' "

The Elf altered his voice slightly to match somewhat the way he recalled his cousin speaking, as well as Gimli. He gave the Dwarf a bit of an accent, one that sounded almost Scottish (though the Elf would not have understood had it been pointed out to him). "He said he intended to start with the kneecaps. Except he said it in English, which is Westron in my world and I had not yet learned this tongue."

Gren laughed at the thought. "He really chased your cousin with an axe? My goodness...that's just too much!" he guffawed. "That must have really been something!"

Aravilui nodded, laughing. "Yes, he did. Got quite a few glares, but I suppose by that point everyone knew they were playing. The fact that Legolas was laughing like a maniac was probably helping, though."

He chuckled and shook his head. "I did not understand, though. I ruined the fun by getting scared and starting to cry again. Gimli was immediately contrite, of course. It took Legolas getting my father to calm me down, and Gimli had to give me lots of sweets before I understood that he had not meant my cousin any harm."

The smile he wore turned into a smirk. "It took more than strictly necessary, though. My father could not understand why I was not interested in dinner that night."

Gren snickered, grinning over his freshly-drained mug. "How old were you?"

Ueki nodded.

"Okey."

He headed into the kitchen, rummaging around until he found a bottle of water, returning with it. He had quietly been listening to the elf's stories, though he hadn't wanted to interrupt.

"Eight. Which means mentally I was... about as a six year old human child?" Aravilui tilted his head up thoughtfully, furrowing his brow as he did some quick mental math. His hair, a bit of a tangled mess around the braids that held it back, finally escaped the braids somewhat and fell into his left eye. He flicked his head to the side with the automatic motion of someone who has been making a motion for so long it was nearly instinctive, not pulled from his reverie.

"I believe that is how it was, yes. I have no actual experience with any human children so it is a very rough guess, though. It takes my people about a century to reach full physical and mental maturity, though we are considered adults at half that. Rather like how humans in my world are considered adults at fifteen, but do not fully reach physical maturity until approximately twenty three or so."

He shrugged, smiling slightly. "My poor Adar had to deal with so much. Becoming a single father in a people that generally does not expect to lose their mate is not an easy thing, and my parents had been married for a ridiculously long time. Or at least, so I say being only barely over a century in age."

He paused and looked at the empty mug he still held, blinking slightly. "...Did you slip something in this? I am never this talkative."

He shook his head with a gentle smile. "No...I'm just a bartender. We bring that out in people...but, you wouldn't have said it so earnestly if you hadn't wanted someone to hear. I'm glad that I got to, personally...that's fascinating stuff! I'm only thirty-one...it must have been amazing, living this long so far."

Ueki sipped from his water bottle. He didn't know who this guy was, but he had great stories. Maybe they could swap stories one time, if he didn't mind...

Aravilui did not look convinced, but he nodded. "Yes, perhaps. I like that story, it was funny."

He smiled, shaking his head slightly. "Among my people, I am much younger than you. You have probably experienced more than I have. My father was... somewhat understandably, I suppose, very protective of me. And I have only this year left the forest for the first time."

His expression turned rather dry and self-deprecating. "So I suppose it is not surprising that I managed to get lost almost immediately."

"Being lost is only a matter of destination."

Ueki finally spoke up in their conversation from a small distace off.

"Where are you trying to go?"
