Debra smiled sheepishly as she replied, "It would be really nice to see Paul again, but I don't see how I can do it. I'm busy with school, and my grandmother would have to take me, and she's busy with work. Of course she could take some vacation time, and it wouldn't hurt if I missed a few days of school. Maybe during the holidays when we're out of school anyway. The big problem is that a trip like that will be too expensive." If Debra had to guess, she would say that the main expenses would be the travel expenses. She was reasonably certain that even if she and her grandmother showed up on Paul's doorstep unannounced and unexpected, Paul's parents would go out of their way to accommodate Debra and her grandmother, and Debra and her grandmother wouldn't have to spend a penny while they were there.

User Image"Well Thanksgiving break is next week, so perhaps you and I could go? I wouldn't mind taking a little vacation and go to another state. I've been to other countries yet I haven't really been to any other state. A little trip like that shouldn't cost much and I really don't mind spending my parents money.." Sofia said as the last part they could probably hear a little bitterness in her worlds which would indicate that her relationship with her parents really wasn't the best.

As a matter of fact, Debra had picked up on the hint of bitterness, and she hadn't forgotten what Alex had said about how Sofia had been in a bad mood that day, which led Debra to guess that Sofia's parents might have something to do with that bad mood. Even so, she also hadn't forgotten Alex's suggestion to not say anything about it, and so she didn't. "Well... that does sound like a good idea," Debra stated, "I'll have to ask my grandmother for permission, and it's probably a good idea if you were to talk to her as well. I think that you can talk her into it if I can't." The possibility that she might actually get to see her friend Paul was exciting, but filled her with apprehension as well. Would Paul recognize her? Could he accept the changes that she had made in her life? Was it possible for him to understand how she had felt after the accident, or would he have the same condescending attitude that Debra hated so much? Additionally, here was more to Debra's story than what she had said up to now. There were a few hints to be found in the photos, but so far neither Sofia nor Alex seemed to have understood the significance of those photos.

User Image"I'm sure I could get your grandmother to let you go," Sofia said with a slight shrug as she flipped through the pages of the album again just for the heck of it. She then shut it and handed it to Alex as she went into the kitchen and began to clean the dishes Alex had dirtied when he made break fast and there was still some so she had called out to Debra, asking if she wanted some. Meanwhile the doorbell rang and since Debra was here it was hard to say who was waiting on the other side and what purpose they had here. Sofia stood by the sing almost frozen, she had a bad feeling and so she would just stand there and wait for either Debra or Alex to open the door.

Alex had been listening as Sofia and Debra talked about visiting Debra's friend. It would have been natural for him to assume that he was going as well, since he was Sofia's husband, but perhaps what they had in mind was an extended 'girls' night out', which meant that he wasn't invited. Of course there was plenty of time to find out if he was going to be a part of the trip. Debra joined Sofia in the kitchen when Sofia asked if she would like some breakfast. Just then the doorbell rang. Like Sofia, Alex was thinking that their latest visitor might be trouble, since Debra was already there. Like before, Alex went to answer the door, partly so that Sofia wouldn't have to come to the door from the kitchen, and partly to run interference for Sofia.

User ImageBehind the door stood a woman in her forties who looked fabulously wealthy yet her facial expression was stern and certainly not amused, but then again that was the way Sofia's mother always looked whenever in the presence of a teenager or anyone she was not acquaintances with. She waited for Alex to let her in but she did utter his name as a greeting and just like the snooty nerdy girl from school she said his full name, "Alexander."

Sofia was too busy in the kitchen to know her mother arrived and since her mother didn't speak loud she was unable to hear her voice. With the mood she was already in there was no doubt Sofia would have an inner fit that her mother was here though the question was 'why is she here?' but a part of her didn't want to know the answer. It seemed that Bo didn't really like the woman either but rather than him barking or growling at her he simply trotted away with his tail tucked between his hind legs and his ears flat on his head as if he feared the woman.

Even though Alex was smiling, he was thinking, 'Oh great! It's the mother-in-law!'. With his mouth he said, "Good morning, Mrs. Dawson! Please come in!" A visit from his mother-in-law was worse than a visit from Helen for a number of reasons, with one of them being that, unlike with Helen, Alex would be required to do a little sucking up. After ushering his mother-in-law to the sofa, he politely asked, "Would you like me to bring you something to drink? Sofia's in the kitchen, and so I'll go to tell her that you're here." In the privacy of his thoughts, he added, 'So that Sofia has the chance to go out of the kitchen window and down the fire escape.' If his mother-in-law did ask for something to drink, with a bit of luck they will actually have some.

"A glass of water will do," She replied with a dull tone as if not wanting to speak with him and sat there waiting for Sofia. There were several reasons why Sofia would likely jump out the window and leave until her mother left and no doubt she would do it. For now she stood by the sink still washing some dishes. It was unclear as to why the woman was here and it was hard to tell if she knew what day it was. Sofia wasn't even sure how she would feel if her mother ended up saying 'happy birthday' and giving a gift that actually came form the heart. That would probably be the day hell would freeze over and it would be the end of the world.

"I'll be right back," Alex said politely, and he made his way to the kitchen as fast as he could go. If his mother had come back, she would have gone into the kitchen herself to spare him from having to run around on crutches. It seemed that Sofia's mother hadn't really noticed his present condition. Not that he expected her to notice. When he got to the kitchen, he quietly said to Sofia, "If you haven't heard yet, your mother is here. Oh, and she wants a glass of water. I'll take it to her." Just then a mischievous smile came to Debra's lips and she suggested, "Why don't I take the water out to her? I'll tell her that I'm your maid. Think she'll buy it?"

((OOC: Question! Are we going to say that Debra's photo album is still in the living room, possibly where Sofia's mother can see it?))

Just as Alex had left the woman spotted something on the table. With delicate hands she picked it up and flipped through it as the stern look on her face became a bit of an angrier expression. She set the album back down and waited for Alex to come back so she could ask why that was there but she didn't feel like waiting for it felt like an hour already passed. Standing up she walked over to the kitchen where she spotted Debra and Alex, Sofia still facing the sink. By now she was ready to throw up or just run out of there but it was too late for her mother was there, staring at them all.

"And who are you?" She asked with venom seeping out of her mouth as she glared at Debra, clearly not liking the way the girl looked and the overall presence of such scary looking creature. She opened her mouth to say a very cruel thing toward the girl but it was as if Sofia had sense it coming so before she could dare open her mouth, Sofia turned and faced the woman.

"What brings you here mother?" The high tension in the air could be felt by anyone walking by and obviously the two didn't exactly have a loving bond. Again Sofia would not allow the woman to speak another word. "I'm sure you came to talk to me in private so....lets do so." She then pushed herself away from the sink and walked out of the kitchen and out the apartment so that they could talk outside. Her mother followed and they stood on the door step and spoke to one another right in front of the door. If Alex and Debra wanted to hear their conversation all they had to do was press their ears against the door.

((OOC: That will cause some interesting drama XD no doubt she'll think Alex is a manwhore and dares to have another woman in the apartment she and her husband bought for Sofia and him hahah))

Debra waited until she heard the front door close, and then she grabbed a cup that was drying in the dish rack and went to the front door. There she placed the top of the cup against the door and pressed her ear against the bottom of the cup so that she could listen in on what was being said outside, assuming that Sofia and her mother were close enough to the door. Debra didn't know why a cup worked better than putting her ear against the door, but it did. Alex had followed her into the living room, and he hissed at her in a low voice, "What are you doing?" "What does it look like I'm doing? Now be quiet!" Debra hissed back. After a moment, Alex went back into the kitchen, and when he returned, he had a cup, which he placed against the door.

The two stood there for a while in silence and they only stared at one another. Debra and Alex missed the first thing they spoke about which was her mother disappointed to what Sofia was wearing.

"I mean honestly all the clothes given to you and this is what you wear? Honestly have you no sense of pride?" Her voice alone was enough to express her irritation and anger.

"It's Saturday and I saw no point in getting dressed nicely, nonetheless what is it you came here for?" Sofia replied as she looked away from her mother to roll her eyes. She sighed and looked down at the ground and again it was silent. By now Debra and Alex were trying to hear their conversation.

"I came here to tell you that your father and I were invited to one of the Mayor's parties and he has asked to see you as well so you are to come and no if and's or butt. Unfortunately he heard that you are...married so he wishes to see Alexander as well so bring him along. Today is an important day and so don't try to argue with me about this. I will see you at home at six and we will all head there together..." And with that she turned around and left.

"So is that all!" Sofia called out before her mother could get in the car. Did she really not remember what day this was. Yes normally it was an important day but clearly it was an important date for a completely different reason.

Her mother simply got in the car and the limo drove off. Sofia just stood there staring at the distance as if she could still see the car. Yet another year of being forgotten...fabulous. Not only that but she had to go to some god forsaken party.

As soon as it became apparent that the conversation between Sofia and her mother had concluded, Debra quickly backed away from the door so that she wouldn't be hit by the door when Sofia came in, and so that it wouldn't be so obvious that she had been listening to the conversation. Debra went so far as to take her cup back into the kitchen, along with the cup that Alex had been using so that he wouldn't have to do it himself. Alex went to the sofa and turned on the TV. To tell the truth, Debra wasn't surprised at all when she returned and saw that he was watching football. Since Sofia hadn't returned yet, Debra felt it was safe to teasingly remark, "So, you get to rub elbows with the Mayor tonight! How special!" "Perhaps," Alex stated. "Sofia didn't sound that excited," Debra observed, "In fact, it seemed that she was expecting something else." Alex shrugged and cryptically replied, "Maybe."

After a little more time of standing out there staring at nothing, Sofia finally came back in and shut the door quietly. She spotted Debra and Alex sitting on the couch watching the football game. She glanced over to see that it was only 1pm but around four she would take Debra home and then come back to get ready for the god forsaken party she HAD to go to. This would be the moment Alex would see her in a whole different way. The way she looked...and the way she acted around her parents. It was terrible and she really didn't want him to see it. After feeding Bo she went and sat with them quietly watching the game as well.

"What did your mother have to say? Anything that you wanted to hear?" Alex inquired. That was a subtle reference to Sofia's birthday that he hoped that Debra wouldn't pick up on. Of course he already knew what Sofia's mother had told Sofia, but he wasn't going to admit that he had been spying on the conversation.
