Oh man, why do I love Doctor Who so much? I can't even begin to explain, but I'll give it try.
Well I've heard of it off and on all my life, but never really looked into it until about two years ago.
The first episode I ever saw was "The Unicorn and the Wasp", and I was instantly hooked. I thought "This show is Brilliant, the Doctor is fantastic, and I LOVE that Donna lady. She is hilarious!"
So I looked into it, and I was hooked.
I love the feeling of excitement when they go to new worlds and discover new things, and I love being able to relate to most of the companions. You have the other worldly elements, meshed with the reaction and curiosity of the human race, and I love it!
Its a wonderfully written series that makes me think, laugh, cry, and shout! Its wonderful, and I will always love it.
I have recently began watching some of the Old who, and I'm loving it just as much!

The one thing that really caught my attention about Doctor Who was how it dealt with one of my favorite topics to think about (I know, pretty nerdy)- the concept of time, space, and other universes. In the Doctor Who world, time is continous- there is no beginning, middle and end of something that happened, instead it is continous (if that makes any sense). Besides delving into the concept of time, it also makes you think about time itself. In the episode, "Turn Left" we see how the world would be so different because of a simple choice Donna made-what if she had turned right instead of left?-how a simple decision can change the entire course of your life, or in the case of Doctor Who, be the end of the world. Something else that I like about it also has to deal with the concept of time-something that will happen in a future episode is referenced in a past episode, such as with River Song in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead. Something that happened to her in the past (which will most likely be a future episode) is referenced in those two episodes. Again, the whole concept of time is explored here, with River having met the Doctor in her past, but he has not yet met her. I also like the whole idea of other intelligent life in the universe, and the idea that there are other universes out there besides our own.
Besides the fact that Doctor Who explores the concept of time and space, it's just awesome. I love the dynamic that is built between the Doctor and his companions, and everything that the Doctor does, all his adventures, everything.

There are 3 big reasons I love Dr. Who.
1. The humor. It's quick, witty, and sarcastic, and it's constantly there. It's not the sort of humor that has you laughing your a** off a few spots in episodes. Rather, it's one that just keeps a happy smile on your face throughout, and I love that.
2. The nice mix between clever and cheesy. No one can deny the cheesiness of giant salt and pepper shakers as the main villains. Still, Dr. Who pulls it off with style and just makes you love it all the more for how ridiculous it is. Then there are the really amazing creature ideas, like the mimic creature in Midnight, that just kind of blow your mind a bit.
3. The characters. The doctors do kind of fit in that second reason, but they also fit here. They're clever and cheesy, and just the right mix of both to make them believable. Also (and I'm just speaking of the new series, as I still haven't seen the old one), they have such a complex past that is shown really well by the writers and the actors. Then there's the companions. I love that the doctor's companions are just regular people who become extraordinary just by being around the doctor. It's played out really well in every season, and it's just a really nice, grounding element of the show.
And that's pretty much the reasons I love Dr. Who and why it's my second favorite show in the world. (Supernatural will always take first place, however. Sorry Doctor.)

This digresses a bit from the original question, but my first exposure to Doctor Who was right here on Gaia. Back when Cinema was new, I watched some of the things it had, including Gattaca, Ghostbusters, and... Doctor Who and the Daleks.
For those of you counting back on your fingers how many years ago that was, let me remind you that Gaia's Cinema is only a few years old. Yep, I'm a newbie (sort of)!
Before that, I had downloaded an assortment of famous theme songs, and included on that CD was Doctor Who's. I had no idea what it was, and considered the synthesized old version to be only a little better than nails on a chalkboard, so I think I only listened to it once or twice.
That was it for a while, because I was in college and taking my work very seriously.
Coming home after graduation, I was surfing the channels while struggling to find my first job (a little more of the former than the latter, to be honest...). I came across this strange little science fiction show on BBC America. Scarecrows marched across a field, and there was a pocket watch involved. Too confusing! I think I ended up watching a James Bond marathon instead.
Then I found out Giles (Anthony Head) was in an episode.
End of story.
