(my mom has been asked this at her job)

Mainland Client: When my flight lands at the airport you'll send someone to get me?
My mom: Yes. It's no problem. ^^
Mainland Client: So will I need a passport?
My mom: ...what? You only need one when you travel outside the country. o_O
Mainland Client: Well, I'm going to Hawaii right? So don't I need a passport?
My mom: ...um... ^^;; We're the 50th state...
Mainland Client: REALLY?! wow... Well, thanks for the information ^^ I'll call you back tomorrow at 3 to get the rest of the billing info ^^
My mom: No problem! Bye now! ^^ *hangs up* ...PASSPORT?! geez... was that supposed to be SERIOUS >.< ugh...

You would be surprised how many people don't know their states -_-* I get that a lot from people who want to fly to Hawaii and know I'm from there. Or they'll ask me if I'm a citizen or how is it like adjusting to America. I have to explain that Hawaii is America.

The worst? I think that would have to be when I had just moved from Hawaii to California in my freshman year of high school. I was explaining that I would have gone to Kamehameha if my parents hadn't moved and a girl exclaimed,
"OMG you people have high schools in Hawaii?" All I could say back was, "No, I miraculously became smart enough to go to hs in California without any schooling at all."

The other was when someone asked me if most Hawaiians were Korean ... which confused the living hell out of me until I remembered that people in California refer to themselves as Californians -_- Then I had to explain to her that no, most people who live in Hawaii were not Korean and that there were actual Hawaiian people ... to which she shrugged and walked away.

The Solution Of Pi Is EAT It!

I'm really beginning to understand why the US is rated #48 on the list of Most Educated Countries. I'm from Los Angeles, and I've never even considered asking questions like that... Really? A passport? Maybe its because I'm a huge nerd, and read a lot of history, and look at lots of maps. Plus, my friends over there would kill me if I ever asked something like that. I'm thinking the only question I could ask is, "People really are that dumb?"

After I moved and people found out I was from Hawaii they'd ask me:

Was it nice?
Do you miss it?
->Yes of course duhh >.< why would you even ask me that I dislike Texas

Can you surf?
->I had a bad experience so... no

Can you hula?
->And what if I can't will you fall over and die (rofl) Honestlythough, I can a little I just don't do it all the time

Can you speak Hawaiian?
-> Look people I understand but I only learned it in elementry school by my Capuna and have forgotten the language. The same gose for every language if you don't practice and speak it every day you will forget some things.

Why are you white?
*must resist beating rude stupid people* ... I fell in a pile white lace when I was a baby razz

My twin's story when she went to the mainland for college. This is a conversation with a blond haired, blue eyed California girl with no Hawaiian ancestry.
California Girl: So you live in Hawai'i right?
Sister: Yes I do, I'm from Maui
California Girl: Oh my dad has a time share over there, we go there every summer. So that makes me Hawaiian too.
Sister: No... having a time share doesn't mean you're Hawaiian...
California Girl: Oh yes it does, my dad said so.
Sister: neutral auwe... *walks away*

....whaaaat? That'd be like saying, "I own land in Africa, that makes me African!" >_>'' It doesn't work that way.

My mom's theory is that some mainland people say it meaning the state and not the nationality. Like "Californian" or "Texan". But I REALLY wish more people would understand that when you say "Hawaiian", because Hawaii is a nationality and formerly a kingdom, people can take offense to it.

I never thought of it like that before, it does make sense. But from what my sister was telling me it seemed like the girl really was saying that she is Hawaiian... =_____= Oh well, I just hope she gets it in her brain soon

Er. It's an ethnicity.

Nationality is where you're a citizen of (Country)

While ethnicity is your race.

When it was my first trip to California, it was also my first time to see my relatives on the mainland face to face.

So as my family arrived to my relative's house, my cousins were bombing me with questions like the majority of people said here (do you surf, hula, etc.). A day before going to see Alcatraz, we stopped at Ross and we had much of a "friendly" chat with one of the cashier.

Cashier: You going to see Alcatraz? Must be visiting right? Where are you from?
Me: Hawaii. I've read about it in several books.
Cashier: Really?! You have books? I thought you guys don't afford those; only those carved pictures on the rocks.
Me: -facepalm-

O_O Oh goodness... It makes you miss the days back when Hawaiians were known as the most literate people in the world.

Hmm well when I visited my family in Ohio from hawaii. I was so excited because I saw all the snow. Even though my tutu took me up on mouna kea and me and my cusions played in the snow or "ICE" I didn't know what to expect. ( The "snow on mouna kea is very icey and no fun)
My dad's side of the family was pure mainland pepole so of course I got the questions:
Gramps: Hey! son! How you doing!
Me: Hi Grandpa xd
Gramps:You Know let me show you how our house looks. Have you ever been in a house?
Me: Um yes???? neutral
Gramps:realy? I mean not a grass hut but a real house.
Me: Grampa I never lived in a grass hut!? eek
(Well at that moment my red faced mom (red due to anger) took me inside I was still little and stuff)
Gramps: well I guess your mom can show you...

Jeez I love gramps but that kinda buged me... sad
