Sofia let out a long sigh filled with dread as she nodded and hung her head low. When she said it like that it all sounded even worse and she now saw why some saw her as pathetic. None the less sigh looked at the girl and said, "My parents were delighted that I wound up hitched to a star athlete and one with good grades...someone that has a bright future and to be honest someone that will add more money." She shook her head and looked up at the sky and gazed at the clouds floating off happily.

"If I could runaway and go somewhere truly peaceful I would but I have goals that I have set for myself and I can't allow such a horrible thing to ruin everything I worked so hard for. I don't know how he feels about the whole thing but he certainly has no idea what I put up on a daily basis. The only sanctuary I have..." She paused when they reached her apartment. She glanced up and sighed adding, "The attic where I can paint and play my music in peace is my piece of heaven." She turned and faced Debra smiling softly at her, "Well this is mi casa...or apartamento...it was very nice meeting you Debra..in fact you can come in if you want, it's up to you."

"Sure, I'll come inside!" Debra replied enthusiastically. She still wasn't in a rush to go home herself. One thing that was in her favor was that if and when her Grandma gave her a hard time about not going home right away, she could honestly explain that she had been with a friend. The fact that Debra had found a new friend, and so soon, would thrill Grandma to death (literally with a lot of luck). Of course Grandma would want to know all about this friend, but Debra would deal with that later. As she waited for Sofia to let her inside the apartment, she casually remarked, "This school is going to be a tough nut to crack, but I can use the challenge." Knowing that Sofia wouldn't know what she was talking about, she explained, "Ordinarily I'm the most hated girl in the school, and even though it's going to be tough to take the top spot from you, I think that I can pull it off. After all, it's a matter of pride. You won't mind if I do that, will you?"

Sofia unlocked the door and opened it to let Debra in though she looked at her with a confused expression as to what she had said about wanting to be the most hated girl in school. Walking in after Debra she shut the door and lead her to the living room and offered her to sit and if she wanted a drink. She then replied, "I don't mind if you do it. It's something you want and I won't stop you from achieving such an interesting goal. I hardly care about anything remotely close to that school and the people attending it. Once we all graduate nothing that happened in those halls will even matter. All the popular kids will disband and no longer see each other and their 'close' friendships will be extinct meanwhile they find that the real world is not a giant High School and soon they'll see that those they picked on are more successful than them. I pride myself on being a very successful person in the future so that those who looked down upon me now will look up at me and regret everything they've done." With a rather long sigh she added, "That's a dream of course, who knows if it will ever happen."

For a moment she vanished into the kitchen and came back with a cup of water and a cup of lemonade drink and let her choose which she wanted if in fact she was thirsty. Sitting down she looked at Debra, "May I ask why it is that you strive to be the most hated?"

Debra decided to go with the lemonade. After considering her words for a few moments, she replied, "Two reasons. The first is universal apathy. In other words, no one really gives a s**t. They don't care about what you are really like and what you can really do, and they hate you because you don't fit into their teeny, tiny box that they call 'normal', and when you end up with something that they want, they get jealous and hate you more. As for me, no one really cares that my parents and brothers are dead. Oh sure, they make a lot of noise about how 'sorry' they are, and they say thing that are supposed to be comforting, like 'It's God's will' and 'It's a test of faith', but do they really know that for certain? I don't think so! How can they really care about that if they really don't understand what I've gone through, and how can they understand if they haven't gone through it themselves? Since they really don't care, why should I care about anyone else? What I'm getting at is that I act this way to expose the hypocrisy for what it really is. If someone really cared, they would accept me for what I am, even if I listen to punk and heavy metal and worship Satan. For the record, I don't really worship Satan or buy into that witchcraft crap, but everyone thinks that I do." Debra paused to take a breath after her rant, and then she continued, "The second reason is my behavior really annoys the h**l out of everyone, especially my grandmother."

Sofia's simple response was, "It make sense to me." She smiled and drank some water and thought over everything Debra had said. Everything she sad she felt was true and who knew of Sofia was one of those people she spoke of but as of now she didn't think she was considering people hated her even before she married Alex because she didn't fit the norm of society but why fit in when you can be anyone you want and not give a s**t? That thought brought a smile to her face as she was glad that she had made a friend and someone who basically thought like her when it came to society. "I'm not one to really say 'sorry' when I hear of someones death. It's tragic but what will 'sorry' do? Bring them back?" She shrugged and added, "It's bad luck if you ask me. You end up at the wrong place and the wrong time and that consequence can be a number of things including death. If I lost my parents and siblings if I had any siblings I don't know how I'd feel about it. They hardly even seem like parents to me...more like nagging roommates. Though now that I live alone they don't bug me as much though now I deal with Alex and I prefer going back home than to sit here and have to deal with that person. I believe there is a hell and at the moment I'm sitting in it and my personal demons that enjoy torturing me are pretty much everyone." Chuckling softly she finished her water and watched Bo trot in and it seemed that he was sleeping. He sat by Sofia's legs and wagged his tail and stared at Debra with what seemed like a friendly smile.

"This is Bo, the only one who comforts me when times get bad, he's very friendly and enjoys to meet new and nice people," Sofia said introducing Debra to her German Shepard and when she did that Bo got up and walked over to Debra to sniff her but it was clear he really was harmless.

"I love dogs!" Debra exclaimed in delight, "And he's such a handsome dog, too!" As she took the time to pet Bo, she went on to say, "You're totally right about that bad luck thing. My brothers were OK, as far as brothers go, and my father was a pretty good father, while my mother was just... perfect. They died in a traffic accident while coming home from a picnic. I had been home sick with a sore throat, and so I hadn't been with them. Sometimes I wish that I had been with them." Like always, Debra had said that as if it no longer mattered to her, but someone who was paying attention to her could see that she was still mourning the loss of her family.

Debra's main problem was that she was so caught up in her own misery that she failed to realize that she wasn't the only one suffering. In spite of what Debra might say about her grandmother, if Sofia were to meet Debra's grandmother, she would find an elderly woman who did care, contrary to Debra's insistence otherwise. Losing her son, daughter-in-law, and two grandsons at the same time had been a heart-breaking experience for Debra's grandmother, and now she was slowly losing her granddaughter as well, but in a more insidious way. She was honestly doing her best to raise Debra as her daughter-in-law would have, and she felt terrible that she seemed to be failing so miserably. To be fair, she had been doing everything that she could to convince Debra that people really did care for her, but all of those efforts were met with scorn and contempt. Every morning and every night, Debra's grandmother would fervently pray that someone would somehow get past the walls of anger and bitterness that Debra had built around herself and find the happy and loving girl that Debra used to be.

"Seems like the bad luck of getting sicked turned out to be horribly good luck in a sense that you're still alive. I would wish the same thing Debra but in the end I believe that if I was lucky enough to still be alive then I'd make the most of it. People choose to mourn differently and you have chosen your path and if you're happy with what you are and what you are doing then by all means continue what you're doing but if it's only doing the opposite effect then perhaps its best to change tactics. Well it's one girls opinion though," Sofia said with a smile and watched Bo wag his tail more as she pet him contently.

Meanwhile Aeron was at the football practice relaxing on the bleachers along with some fan girls though he sat by himself as usual. He grinned and watched their scrimmages but was sure to keep his eyes on a certain someone. In his opinion Sofia was lucky to end up with such a hot guy but his personality was s**t so in the end Alex was a pile of s**t. Aeron chuckled and whenever a pass was incomplete he would make a smart a** remark toward Alex.

While Alex was doing some passing drills, one of his receivers, who called himself Billy Bob, quietly said to him, "You know that gay boy is over there making fun of you, right?" Alex acknowledged that with a nod and stated, "Yeah, I know. I'm just biding my time, waiting for him to make that one big mistake, and then I'll have all of the justification that I need to take him down. Until then, I'll just let him think that he's getting away with it. His day will come."The thing that Alex didn't say was that he knew better than to mess with Sofia's only friend. It was difficult enough to live with Sofia as it was, and it would only get worse if she thought that Alex had even threatened to beat up Aeron. Billy Bob then asked, "Doesn't it bother you that he spends so much time with Sofia?" It did a little, but there was nothing that Alex could do about it, and so he rationalized, "Why should it? He's gay! What are they going to do together? Go clothes shopping and get a make-over? Scary! When you think about it, he's the last guy in the school who will try to sleep with Sofia. Even Greg would try it before he did, and Greg would never do that to me." It also went without saying that if Sofia wouldn't sleep with her own husband, she certainly wouldn't sleep with anyone else. Billy Bob conceded that with a nod and said, "You got a good point there. He probably keeps the other guys away from her, and so I guess he's good for something."

Even though Debra was getting a certain amount of satisfaction from the way that she dressed and acted, she wasn't completely happy. Her 'goth look', as she called it, was the means to an end rather than a choice of lifestyle, and that end was to annoy her grandmother as much as possible. When the time came for Debra to go to college and leave her grandmother behind her, she was going to abandon her 'goth look' as quickly as a butterfly abandons the cocoon. In the meantime, the 'goth look' was the foundation of her rebellion against her grandmother's authority. By now Debra had decided that Sofia did understand her to a certain extent, and in spite of Debra's preference to not have any friends, she had chosen to make an exception for Sofia. Why else would she have bared her soul, more or less, to someone that she had just met? Changing the subject, Debra said, "You mentioned that you got into your attic to paint and play music. If you don't mind, I would like to see one of your paintings."

It was rare for anyone to see her paintings since she didn't like flaunting her things about like others but she could make and exception so with a nod Sofia stood up and lead Debra to the hall way. There she reached up and pulled on the short stringer she had to jump for to get and the door opened, the latter dropping to let them go up. She let Debra go up first into the rather spacious attic a small gran piano sitting by the window with the rest of her instruments around the piano all on a stand or in their cases. Half the attic was for music the other half had all her painting materials, large to small canvases sitting on their stands, empty with no paint on them yet. On the wall were paintings she finished as well as sketches, some charcoal drawings, one of them of Bo and there was a large painting that was very hard to miss. Sofia got up and walked around letting Debra take everything in while she sat over at the piano and looked over at the gothic girl who she could now call a friend. Aeron would never believe this even if Debra was still here!

Aeron on the other hand continued to be a smart a** whenever they messed up, specifically Alex of course. Though unlike any other guy in school he was no where near scared of Alex. For one if Alex tried to fight him Sofia would only hate even more and two Aeron was no where near a wimp, in fact he grew up fighting almost every day because of his sexuality and not to mention the house abuse he dealt with. All he did was smile and continue with his comments. When a pass was incomplete again he stood up and yelled out, "My grandma can throw better. And they say you're the best quarter back!" He laughed and jumped off the bleachers and started to leave since he grew bored and so he shoved his hands into his pockets and was on his way.

Alex was conveniently between plays when Aeron chose to leave. When Alex saw that Aeron was walking away, he couldn't resist the urge to respond to the many jibes that Aeron had been throwing at him, and so he said to his teammates, "I'll be right back." Alex chased after Aeron until he was close enough to speak without yelling, and once he had gotten Aeron's attention, he said, "Listen here, buddy. The respect that I have for my wife is the only thing that's keeping me from teaching you a lesson, but one of these days, your mouth is going to write a check that your body can't cash. Just keep that in mind." Having soothed his ego, Alex returned to his practice without waiting for a response. Needless to say, his coach had noticed his absence, and he called out to Alex, "Is there something that I should know about, King?" "Not at all, coach," Alex replied. Like the previous day, as soon as the practice was over, Alex showered, dressed, and spent some time watching films of their upcoming opponents before he returned home. He had no idea that Sofia had a guest at the moment. How could he? Sofia had no friends, aside from Aeron, and so who would be going to see her?

Debra looked at the musical instruments first, and after a moment she asked, "You play all of these? Now I'm really impressed!" She had said that with complete sincerity. While the musical instruments had gotten only a passing glance, the same wasn't true for the paintings. Even though she wasn't the artistic type, she could spend a long time in examining and appreciating Sofia's obvious talent in painting. Pointing at the drawing of the dog, Debra stated, "That looks just like him. I don't have the talent or the patience to draw something that detailed. Once I drew a picture of a horse, and everyone thought it was a cat." After looking at the most prominent of the works of art for a while, Debra gestured towards the painting and said, "Wow! I mean that's just... wow! I... don't know what else to say!"

Aeron hadn't turned when Alex came up to him and spoke his piece and when he walked off Aeron made sure not to laugh. He glanced back and muttered, "Respect my wife? That's a laugh. I've heard differently Mr. hot shot." He smiled and turned away and continued his way back to his place. It was hard not to go back and give Alex a piece of his mind after all that Sofia had told him and at times Aeron wanted to pretend to be a straight guy pretending to be gay so that Alex would thing that he was only doing so to get close to Sofia and then get in her pants. But doing so would be difficult since he didn't want to lose her friendship. In fact thinking about it Aeron figured that maybe Sofia wouldn't mind wanting to be in on the plan. With those final thoughts he chuckled and would do so.

Sofia had walked with Debra explaining some of the paintings and she had told her that her that she indeed knew how to play all the instruments. Now that they went to the paintings she explained some of them since they were rather abstract. When it came to Bo's charcoal she smiled and nodded telling her how long it took which took about a month. When it came to the more dominant painting she told her the deeper meaning of it. After that Sofia looked around the room and looked at the clock to see that Alex would be home soon but it didn't really matter to her. She turned to the girl and said, "Would you like something to eat or do you have to go home now? I don't want to keep you too late and bore you since this is the most interesting thing about me." Sofia had said motioning to the attic and chuckled softly before waiting for the girls response.

"I can stay longer," Debra quickly assured Sofia. She still wasn't in a rush to go home, and she was actually enjoying her conversation with Sofia. In fact, her self-enforced loner status had been going on for so long now that actually having a friendly talk with another girl was virtually intoxicating. In spite of her determination to be as miserable as possible, Debra actually missed having a close friend to confide in. At the moment it seemed that she had found such a friend.

Like the previous day, as soon as Alex walked into the apartment, he loudly called out, "I'm home! Is dinner ready yet?" As he went to sit in front of the TV, he noticed the small black purse that was sitting on the sofa. It was definitely not Sofia's purse. It seemed that he had seen it before, but he couldn't remember where and when at the moment. Knowing that Sofia would show up whenever she chose to, Alex sat down, turned on the TV, and looked for a movie to watch.
