In Littleroot...

"My my! Look at how much bigger you've gotten!" Said Professor Redwood as he look over Professor Cute, his Cleffa. " You're getting bigger and stronger, yes you are!" Professor Cute smiled and waved his little arms. He was ready...to go visit Rustburo! It was first time leaving the city, but #3 had told Professor Redwood to meet #4 there. It seemed like urgent business. "Well, whatever it is, I'm sure you can handle it!" the professor patted Cleffa's head. They grabbed their gear and left the lab. It might be tough...but we can handle it!

"K...ren?" Aeris tried to get out, her mouth full of dirt from the path. The close contact with another human being brought back the full extend of Aeris's timidity, and she simply lay there face down, still as a statue.

Somewhere above her Haunter had appeared and was hissing and spitting at Karen, looking as though he was about to use his razor sharp teeth to take a chunk out of her skull.

Stoppit, Han... It was an accident..

But... Aeris could tell he wasn't pleased, but nevertheless he settled for hissing and glaring instead of moving in to attack. She was grateful, although she couldn't see why she should be.

Karen felt a brief, strong wind zoom past her. How strange, considering it wasn't windy at all today. She shrugged off the random wind and responded to Aeris with a smile and a cheerful "Yup, it's me again! It's great to see you!"

Cosette narrowed her eyes at the Haunter who gazed threateningly at her trainer. The Ponyta quickly filled the space between Karen and the other Pokemon, glaring at it to warn it away from her dear friend.

Karen glanced at Cosette and Haunter, giggling a bit. "You sure do look a bit grumpy today, Haunter."

Lyn walked along the coast. She was heading toward Petalburg Woods again. But this time, she knew she couldn't go back to her home. At least not until she beat at least three gym leaders. She munched on her Cinnabar Explosion, the biggest Cinnabun there was that was covered in orange flavored icing. It was delicious. Tiger was having fun running off his leash. He'd run back occasionally and Lyn would give him a piece of her Cinnabun. She put the Cinnabun in a container and placed it in her bag. Lyn moved closer to the path and Tiger followed her. They were closing in on the forest...

The strong wind caused Aeris's hair to flutter up in a silent cloud of dark, and the refreshing breeze snapped her out of her stupor.

"Um...Lynch-san...?"

She wondered how long the happy go lucky red head was going to keep her pressed in the mud. Or how long it would be before Han lost his patience, At times he could be too overprotective.

"Yeah? Oh.. Oh! I-I'm sorry!!" Blushing bright red, Karen jumped off Aeris and stuck out a hand to help her up too. "Oh, and no calling me anything formal, alright? Just Karen would be great!"

As Lyn sat with Tiger, she began to think about her past. In particular, she began to think of her friend Karen. They used to hang out together. Both of them had fire pokemon. Lyn's sister always got along with people better, so Lyn's only friend, apart from Tiger, was Karen. And then she moved. "...You know...we should make some friends if we're going to be successful..." she explained to Tiger. "I sure wish Karen was here...I get so shy..." Tiger flopped over, he was enjoying his sun bathing and ignoring Lyn as usual. "...WHY DO YOU IGNORE ME!!!???" Lyn screamed at the top of her lungs. She was only kidding, but she liked to surprise Tiger, it kept him on his feet. It literally kept him on his feet, he jumped up and immediately began to look around for the enemy. Without one around, he flopped back down and fell asleep.

Aeris lay still for another moment and wiped the dirt off her clothing with unnatural grace.

"I'm sorry, Miss Karen." She said, smiling softly and taking a shy step back. Han moved to reside over her shoulder protectively.

Karen watched Aeris gracefully rise from the ground. The word 'wonderful' again came to her mind as she watched the dark-haired girl stand up and dust herself off.

"No no, 'miss' will not do either. Just Karen. No formal titles if we're going to be friends!" Karen again grasped both of her hands, giving Aeris a cheerful smile at her decision to make the girl her new friend.

"Friends..." Aeris rolled the word off her tongue as though it was a particularly delicious food to be analyzed for Home Magazine. She adjusted her ruffly pirate shirt and tucked her stray black lock behind one ear, contemplating her toes timidly.

She wanted to ask the girl where she was headed, but a sudden fear of attatchment filled her with dread. She couldn't explain it, but how could she ever resign her new 'friend' to traveling longside the undead? Her eyes widened with fear as the morning air contorted into shockwaves of purple; Aeris and Han had disappeared again. She sighed sadly about a mile up the road when she reappeared. Yes...Her and Han were better off alone.

Karen stared at the space where Aeris had stood before and sighed. She hugged Cosette gently around her muzzle and sighed again. "I guess she didn't to be friends. I don't know why, Cosette, but that was probably the worst rejection I've ever had. Probably 'cuz she didn't even tell me why she didn't want to be my friend... hey wait, maybe she's just shy! Yeah, that could be it! Gotta think positive, maybe she's just a little nervous. Well, next time I see her I'll make sure she knows that she doesn't have to be shy around me!" With a quick squeeze, Karen let go of Cosette who nuzzled the red head quickly before heading off with her in the direction of the cave.

Lyn stood before the entrance of the woods. Tiger was sniffing at the trees, marking his territory. They had been in there before, but not before running out after a pokemon jumped out at them from behind. This time, they couldn't go running out. I'll just stick to the path as best I can...but I still have to go through the grass at some point... She gulped and took her first steps into the cool shade of the trees. Tiger followed her but decided it was better if he went ahead to sniff for any enemies.

You're being awefully hypocritical lately, Aeris.

The again invisible Han said from behind the boulder in the cave he and Aeris had ducked into. She and Han had been on thier way to find a wild pokemon to cajole into joining them, but Aeris had found none to her satisfaction. With a sigh, she wrapped her arms arounf her legs and stared at the rocky wall opposite her.

This was one of the few places in Hoenn Aeris when to be alone, away from people in the quiet, just her and Han. Well, except for the Hikers, who she didn't mind. Scaring them away was one of Her and Han's favorite passtimes.

She kept thinking about her recent chance to make a new friend, and now swiftly it had been taken from her. Or rather, how she had taken it from herself.

"OH MY MEW! IT'S A MONSTER!!!!" Lyn cried as she ran away from the Wurmple hanging off the tree. Tiger watched her curiously. Lyn was a coward sometimes when it came to the forest. Tiger walked along the path a little before turning around and chasing after Lyn. She was his food supply after all. He chased her down, jumped up and grabbed her skirt and pulled her down. After that, he bit her foot and carried her off. Lyn was still screaming and flailing her arms.

Karen easily found the cave near the end of the path that she had seen the day before. She glanced at the sign before entering the cave. Rusturf Cave. Yup, this was the one. Karen peeked her head into the cave. It was dark. Very dark. If there was one thing Karen didn't like, it was dark places. They always made her extra nervous and jumpy.

"On second thought, Cosette, why don't we go train outside? It's a lovely da-" Before she could even finish that last word, drops of rain began to trickle onto the ground. Within seconds it was pouring and Cosette was taking cover in the cave. Karen sighed and reluctantly entered the cave after her Pokemon. If there was one thing Cosette didn't like, it was definitely rain, being a fire-type Pokemon and all. Karen didn't mind it too much, though. But for the sake of her friend she decided to take shelter in the dark cave until the rain cleared up, which wouldn't be anytime soon with all those clouds in the sky.
