No, that is impossible. The main idea of Democracy is to allow the people as much freedom to do what ever they want. If you do not make a capitalism or commercialism possible, it crumbles.

Democracy in the ancient world was simply giving power to the people and taking it away from the aristocracy. Damn good system. Sure it did lead way to commercialism, in Athens this is, but yeah.

In todays world, a republic and a democracy are two different sub-heading. Republic refers to the type of leader you have. The USA is a Democratic Republic, while we are a Democratic Monarchy.

Thus, you could have a Communist Republic.
