#4 walked under her umbrella toward the Rustturf cave. She should head back to Rustboro, #3 said that Professor Redwood would have something for her. What it was, she didn't know. She did know that the rain was making her angry. Fluffy didn't mind so much. Rain always made her grass types happy. The cave was in sight. She saw blue flames flickering inside. Hmm...a pokemon? How odd...I'll hide a bit before they go further in, then I'll sneak past her in the fog. She moved into the trees while Fluffy lounged around in the rain.

Aeris felt the presense of someone entering the cave, and thinking that it could be a hiker disappeared to the spot to check it out. She could use a cheering up, and scaring a big guy three times her size sounded more than dandy.

Haunter let off an evil cackle that shook the cave as he read her thoughts and quickly followed her, the earing chiming like a clear bell in the stagnant air.

Upon reaching the entrance to the cave, Aeris's violet eyes pierced the darkness and clearly made out the intuder. If anyone were to look her way they would see her clearly illuminated with the same luminescent glow that carressed her outline during the night. Except here in this cave, where there was no moon to hide the affects, it looked especially strong.

Her heart compressed with guilt as she noticed Karen and Cosette, and she swiftly hid behind a rock.

Professor Cute jumped around merrily in the collecting puddles. Professor Redwood put some yellow rubber boats on him, a yellow rain coat, and gave him a little yellow umbrella which he waved around as a toy. Professor Cute never played in the rain before, he was only a few months old. He jumped in one particularly loaded puddle and splashed himself in the face. His face scrunched up and he began to cry and flail his little arms madly. "Ooooh! Don't cry." Professor Redwood scooped him up and wiped his face off with a napkin. Professor Cute cheered up momentarily but his face returned to a wrinkled state. This time, it was in anger. Professor Cute jumped out of Professor Redwood's arms and glared in the left direction. "What is it? Huh? Hey! Who are you!?"

In Rustboro...

Jade, the gym leader, had been feeling depressed lately. Liz Lillyland, the Elite Four's #4 and one of the leading pokemon experts on grass type pokemon had been in the city and he didn't even get to talk to her! "That's it!" he declared. "I will talk to her! To VERDANTURF!!!" He rushed out of the gym and set off...in the wrong direction.

Karen looked around her. Darkness; everywhere she looked it was pitch black. Her eyes weren't adjusting very well to the darkness, either. She began to shiver. It was cold, and she was becoming a little nervous over the darkness surrounding her.

"W-well, I guess we should look around for s-some Pokemon to catch, huh Cosette?" Cosette gently nudged her trainer and trotted close by her side, knowing the girl was afraid of dark, contained places.

Every once in a while the cave echoed with small noises. Droplets of water falling to the ground, the faint cry of a Pokemon, pebbles falling to the ground from the sides of the cave. Each noise caused Karen to jump and cover her ears for a moment. "Why can't the rain just stop so we can go outside? I hate it in here..."

She suddenly picked up a louder sound which felt closer than the other sounds. Karen let out a brief scream in surprise and dropped to the ground, huddling with her knees supporting her chin and her arms wrapped around her legs. Tears lingered in her eyes, refusing to fall. "I wanna get out of here... please stop, rain..." Cosette layed down next to her and rubbed her head against Karen's arm to comfort the girl.

Tiger did not like the rain. Lyn put on a jacket and held him to her to keep him covered as best he could but...he disliked that even more. Lyn would ruffle up his head fur which made him angry. Most of the wild pokemon now hid in the shelter to avoid the rain. Tiger was angry that he didn't get to do that as well, but Lyn decided to take use this chance to get through the forest without any pokemon jumping at her. Tiger didn't mind fighting, but he knew that Lyn would have to take him to the Pokemon Center if he was hurt. The potion was for emergencies. Maybe when they were closer to the exit and the rain had stopped...then he would fight something. Lyn was currently wondering where that exit was...it was already dark because of the clouds, so she couldn't tell what time it was, and checking her watch would mean dropping Tiger. She just had to keep walking for now...

Aeris couldn't make her feet leave their hiding place to go comfort the whimpering girl at the entrance. Thus, thinking nothing of it, she choose the next best method.

Are you afraid of the dark? For the first time ever, she linked minds with a person other than Han and sent the thought on a one way course into Karen's brains. At least now she didn't have to approach her herself....which was a good thing. Because what kind of normal person glows in the dark?

Karen gasped upon hearing the familiar voice. "A-Aeris? Is that you? Where are you, please come out!" She looked around desperately for a familiar face, but saw none. More tears began to form in her eyes. Would if she just imagined hearing that voice? That was most likely the case, but even if it was, it was very comforting to hear the voice of the dark-haired girl. Karen hugged her legs closer to her and whimpered as she heard another strange noise in the distance.

Liz decided to go for it. She dashed to the cave, stopped, turned around to put Fluffy back in her pokeball, and then ran toward the cave again. She entered the cave and...tripped over the girl on the ground.

I will not come out. Aeris said, sinking down to sit on the ground. Just know that you're safe. You needn't fear the darkness.

Oh, you big sap. Why don't we just travel with the little one, Aeris?

Han, you should know that we can't...how frightening for others!
Aeris responded, resting her chin in one pale white, bony hand. It hurt her to see Karen so sad when she was always such a happy, refreshing thing. So full of life Aeris did not have...

Karen shrieked as she felt something touch her and collapse with a thud next to her. She jumped up quickly and dashed away from whatever it was, entering further into the cave. Cosette chased after her and pulled on her sleeve with her teeth once she caught up to the red head. Karen stopped and gasped for breath, her heart beating rapidly. She looked around, realizing that she no longer had the comfort of being at the entrance of the cave with the small amount of sunlight shining from the opening. She was now surrounded in complete and total darkness. She sniffled as a few tears began to fall, and she dropped back down on the ground. Cosette pressed her head close to her Karen's, feeling sorry for her dearest friend.

Then Aeris's voice again entered her mind. Karen blinked and wiped another fallen tear from her face before replying. "B-but why can't I see you? Aeris, I really wanna see you right now! I'm so scared..." Karen hugged the head of her concerned Ponyta, hoping to comfort herself a little knowing that she had a friend right beside her. But she knew that seeing Aeris would help too, somehow. Having two friends around would be nice and comforting...

Liz grabbed her head and sat up slowly. She dusted herself off, wondering what she had tripped over. She knew that she had to get to Rustboro and ran off through the cave again, whipping out her flashlight so she wouldn't trip again. She didn't notice that she dropped her Roserade's pokeball back at the entrance...

As Karen had come running deeper into the cave, Aeris had been forced to squeeze herself into a tiny crevice to keep the glow of her ghostly self from becoming known to the sobbing woman.

I cannot show myself to you simply because I cannot. There is no need to be scared. A woman tripped over you at the entrance but she meant no harm, I believe.

Han sensed that his beloved Aeris wouldn't be needing him for a moment as she tried ot confort the hysterical Karen, so he floated back to the entrance of the cave to examine where the woman had entered.

He hadn't recognized her, but he did notice that she had dropped a pokeball. Deiciding to surprise Aeris with another pokemon catching tool when she wasn't so scrunched, he picked up the ball and stuck it in his mouth to present it to his friend later.

Again Karen looked around for Aeris, and sadly stared down at the ground when she could not find her. The words Aeris spoke to her only added to this new sadness. "You really don't want to be my friend do you? Is that why you are hiding from me? You don't want to be around me...?" Karen suddenly shook her head vigorously, momentarily forgetting the darkness around her as she spoke to Aeris. "No no no, silly me. If you don't want to hang around me, then that's alright, I'll be fine with that! I will, I really will." Karen tried her best to sound cheerful, but her voice cracked on those last few words. Trying to cover up her disappointment, she cleared her throat and giggled softly.
