Questionable Tactician

Ilona Andrews
Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack's shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there's little available in Atlanta.

Kate can't bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they'll pay him in medicine. With the young people's survival and the Pack's future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they're heading straight into a trap…

Um. Interesting. Not gonna lie, that doesn't really make me want to read it... It seems like a very tame summary compared to most of the other Kate books.

True, but you know they'll find a way to make it crazy. I was hoping for a book about Kate's show-down with her dad. All that foreshadowing about how he was moving against the Pack because they had the power to stand against him and he was going to come looking for whomever killed his sister.... This feels a bit like filler.

Maybe that's going to be the trap? XD

That'd be interesting, especially if it was a trap set up by that dude (I think his name is Hugh?) who replaced Kate's adoptive father as Roland's right-hand guy.

If I remember correctly, the next Kate book comes out today! Exciting!

I probably won't have time to read it for a couple weeks, but hopefully I'll be able to go grab it sometime this week.

Wow, I've been waiting so long I forgot about it. Now I'm excited xd

I know, huh? XD I think I'll try to go grab it tomorrow. I haven't had any free time this week so far, basically. I won't be able to read it with a good conscience until after next Thursday, though, but at least I'll have it!

Of course I'm stuck in a town without a bookstore! You'll have to let me know how it is! I hope this isn't just a filler book. I'd like to see the showdown between Kate and her family or at least start setting it up.

Okay well I bought and read the book on Thursday even though I have ten million other things I should have been doing. XD

I enjoyed it a lot. Except for all the relationship crap, but what else is new? The plot was fun. It was pretty cool to learn about other mythical creatures in the Kate universe. The relationship stuff kind of ruined chunks of the book for me, though. I mean, I get it--they're dramatic and crazy and do weird things. I guess it fits the characters to do the stuff they do. But really.

I really enjoy Hugh d'Ambray as a character. I wish he could plausibly be in the books more for fun conversation and cool fight scenes.

Now I really want to read that book! So glad Hugh is back, he was interesting in Magic Slays and I've been looking forward to finding out more about him. Not stoked to hear there's lots of relationship crap, but it's not unexpected.

Not unexpected at all, sadly. In between all that stuff, though, I was pretty constantly thinking, "Damn, these books are so good."

I've started it. I'm already tried of them making such a big deal about the kids turning loup. I get that preventing that is the driving issue in this book but they just keep agonizing about "oh no what if I want to have some screaming brats will they go crazy?" I get it, stop dwelling on it and go do something about it.

If you read ebooks I finished one that reminded me a lot of Kate Daniels' world. It's called Pactum by Nicholas Taylor.
