I had a substitute teacher for my history class, and he told me a GOOD point about Hawaiian stereotyping.

We were talking about terrorists and the people who hijack planes, and he said: "Sometimes those guys will kidnap or kill United States citizens. So, if you ever have to go to a middle eastern country or somewhere else where people sometimes aren't friendly toward Americans or kidnap Americans, tell them you're from Hawaii."

And some guy in class asked, "What difference will that make?" and the teacher explained that Hawaii gives enough of an "exotic" impression that those guys might not consider you an American.

I don't ever think I'll be going anywhere that dangerous in the future, but it's still a good tip to know.

While at my jobs.....

(hotel)
Tourist: Hi, I would like to send this letter to Ohio in the United States of America. Do you know how much the postage is from this territory to there?

Me: You do know that we are the 50th state right?

Tourist: Oh no wonder...I thought it was weird that they didnt ask for my passport.

(na pali sailboat)
Tourists: I dont have any hawaiian currency on hand for your tip, but will you take this American one?

Me: (slightly insulted) Sure! I particularly like the ones that say 50 since we're trying to be the 50th state.

Tourist: Oh, um how much would that be in your currency?

Me sad thinking he cant actually believe me) Enough to support my family for
awhile. Maybe get me to America.

Tourist: Wow! Amazing what you people go through. Here's a hundred.

Me: eek

Tourist: Have a nice day and good luck with going to America

Me: eek

Boss: Your an idiot.....

"Whats that accent?"

Me-- "What accent?"

"You have a twang in your voice."

Me--"Oh, its Missourian."

"Oh, like from Missouri? Did you grow up on a farm?"

Me--"No."

"Oh, did you raise any animals?"

Me--"No."

"Ever go to Branson?"

Me--"Yes."

"Haha, your such a hick."

Me-- " . .. ... .... I grew up in the capitol city. My graduating class from high school was 1,200. The only animals I have ever owned consist of Hamsters, Cats, Dogs, Snakes, a Chinchilla, and a horse. Yes, I said horse, no I didn't raise it, and no it was not on a farm, we had a small bit of empty land to either side of out house. And yes, I've been to Branson, its lame and full of old washed up people attempting to revive their carriers and failing. The next time you assume Missouri means hick think about it this way, we have ST Louis, we have Kansas City, and we have Jefferson City, we're not all farms and tractors."

Haha, that's funny. Though, when this guy I know came to Hawaii from Texas and I heard him speak, I was like... oh, that's odd, he doesn't really have an accent. Of course, now I know better. xD

He said it's more if you go into rural areas?
