I read an article like this in Ferret magazine. Correct me if I'm wrong.
It does have something to do with light exposure. I guess it goes back to the changing of the seasons, as there's more light in the spring (which is also mating season) extra hormones related to mating are produced. And since ferrets live indoors with artificial light all the time, the hormones don't really know how to regulate themselves and are overproduced. Resulting in adrenal disease. It is curable, though, with implants the vet can give the ferret (They need new implants every 4 months or so).
The shelter where I adopted two ferrets has a few adrenal ones. They say they're ready to be adopted but they must go back to the shelter every 4 months for new implants.
