well my jack is pretty calm but will still jump from hand to hand. freya is a very jumpy little creature and does leaps of faith if im not careful

if he is just stittin gon your hand and never walks or jumps then he is probably afraid, which is normal so dont worry, he is still new.

and its perfeclty normal not to really see them move in their tanks and just see them in a different spot every once in a while. at night though sometimes you can hear them jumping around

I went to clean out Yoshi's water and food. When I looked in the water I saw some small specs of stuff, so I thought maybe it was just dirt, because sometimes when I wake up theres a lot of dirt in there, as if he hopped in for a bath.. turns out he does, because I caught him doing it one night. Anyway.

The specs were not brown like dirt, they were really small, and skimming and jumping over the water, like they were insects. I cleaned the water bowl out good, and I put it back in there. I figured I would check it every so often to see if they get back in there before he does. Is this normal? I don't have a live vivarium, as you've seen. The only thing 'live' is the peat moss, organic soil, and that coco fiber you buy at pet stores. Is the insects from the soil, or him? What do I need to do?

EDIT:
I cleaned his cage completely. I only put coco-fiber in.

Sounds like it might either be phorid flies or mites.

Phorid flies come in in dirt. They're attracted to food and moisture, and breed in water (hence flying around over it). No real way to permanently get rid of them without making the cage unlivable for your crestie, but you can try and at least reduce the population by cleaning out the enclosure completely and using all new soil, moss, etc. Might not be a bad idea to bake everything in the oven, or at least freeze it, before use, to try to kill what bugs might already be in the soil and moss. Phorid flies aren't going to hurt your pet; just annoy the crap out of you. (And maybe supply a food source--I've heard of box turtles that feast on the larvae living in the water.)

Mites, though curable, are BAD news. They're hard to get rid of, and they suck the lizard's blood (like fleas and lice, only for reptiles). If a mite infection gets out of hand or otherwise left alone, it can even be fatal to the reptile.

Judging by your description, my guess is phorid flies. Mites would look as if someone had ground up pepper into the water, as they can't swim or fly and will simply drown in water. Reptiles know this, and will instinctively soak (a LOT) when they have mites, in an attempt to get rid of the infection.

If you're concerned that it's mites, you should be able to do a Google search for how to treat them. If no one here can give you proper directions concerning treating mites on a Crested gecko, it may be a good idea to find a good crestie forum and pose the question there for expert opinions. Treating mites on snakes is rather straightforward, but geckos tend to be far more fragile and their skin much more delicate, so I'm not sure that what's safe for a snake would be safe for a crested.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I did clean everything in his cage, including getting rid of the dirt mixture I had and replacing it with just cocofiber. I haven't seen any since. Only reason why I didn't remove that was because I still wanted info on it, in case it should ever happen again.

Thanks again for your reply, it helped me a lot. :]
