Blue Moon Chronicles
Chapter One: Awakening

It was mid afternoon, the day was calm, and birds were singing outside her window. It would have been such bliss, if not for the dull pain below her ribcage. Where was she? It felt like a very comfortable bed, but how was that possible? Hadn’t they been deep in the forest? Slowly the female opened her eyes looking up at the ceiling. She tried to remember all the events that had taken place, but it was like a piece of her memory and just evaporated. Painfully youth sat up finding herself to be resting in a small room.
The walls were made of smooth stone, while the floors were polished pine boards. Besides her bed there was a single chair with a modest table as its companion. Upon the table lay what looks like fresh bandages and a basin filled with water. Turning her leisured attention from these items the maiden glanced out the window, her image dimly reflected on the glass her large cat-like eyes stared back at her. The irises were of different colors, one resembled an early autumn leaf, green with inner warmth, and the other was a reflection of a rainy evening, grey with cooled edges. Her hair was a long silvery mane that faded to black tips at the bangs, and shone like crystal stands in the sunlight. Her skin was a pale tan that complimented her blue-violet markings that consisted of three stripes on each cheek, and the symbol of an eclipse on her forehead. Protruding from her head were two long triangular ears, covered in velvety soft fur with colorings that harmonized with her shimmering tresses.
Outside the pane she could see that she was at the Fortress of Craigh, her home for the past decade, and the homeland of the Drake Kin. Comprehension of her surroundings only confused her more.
“Keara, you’re awake?!”
The young Tribe Kin quickly turned at the sound of her name to find a tall male standing in the door-way with a shocked expression on his face. It was Damian Itami; he was about six feet tall, almost a full head taller than she, and built to be strong, but quick on his feet. His hair was the color of late summer wheat and cut in in a very messy fashion, though short at his nape. His sun-tanned skin was mostly hidden under dark cloth that clung loosely to his body. Damian’s Drake kinship was apparent by his Elvin ears, long heavy silver-plated tail, and large talon-clawed feet. As he took the seat next to her bed Keara looked up into his face, which was partly hidden by a silver-colored sash that had been tied to skillfully hide his right eye.
“Are you in pain? Does it hurt anywhere?” He asked concern aging his youthful face. Keara continued to stare at him, confusion enveloping her once more.
“My abdomen hurts a bit, besides that I’m just a bit stiff, but what happened to you Damian? I mean…” She dropped off hesitantly touching the silk concealing that section of his face.
In answer Damian turned his head away watching her carefully before he started to speak tentatively, “Much has happened Keara, you’ve been asleep for a month…How…” the dragon man stopped and turned his gaze to the floor his tail shifting nervously, “How much do you remember?” he questioned fixing his good eye back onto her.
Keara sat in silence for a moment sinking in what he told her. She had been asleep for a month, how was that possible, surely she would have died from not receiving food or water? The tribal woman watched him carefully unconsciously cradling her abdomen with one of her hands. Damian was hiding something, Keara frowned at the thought, she’d play his game, but she wanted answers, “Not much, last I remember was that we were on our way to the Aejiren Territories to negotiate with the Water Tribe, why?”
Damian let out a heavy sigh running a hand through his hair as if in deep thought and great frustration, “I think we should probably wait until you are better recovered before I explain to you what happened” He advised after a while.
Keara frowned up at him, her gaze full of more worry than anger, “Damian, if something bad has happened I would rather here it sooner than later. You know I can handle it” she stated confidently, though her heart beat had started to speed with her growing anxiety.
Damian shook his head briskly before he started to stand cursing under his breath as the sash he wore over his face started to stain red, though he seemed used to it, “…Keara, I doubt no matter how I word it, you’d never be able to handle what I have to say…I’m sorry I’ll visit you later.”
The male turned to leave, but Keara quickly grabbed his arm, almost falling out of the bed in the process. She wanted to vomit from the sudden pain that shot through her body at the motion, but managed to say,” I deserve to know…”
Damian paled, ignoring his own wound and quickly helping her back into the bed. If Keara wasn’t busy recovering from the sudden shock of pain she had just endured then she might’ve been embarrassed to find her torso naked except for the bandages around her abdominal area, which had started turning red from her careless actions.
“Damn it, fine...I’ll…I’ll tell you, just don’t pull a stupid stunt like that again!” Damian growled as he helped her back in the bed and covered her torso back up with the bedding. Keara could only manage a quick nod her eyes fixed on his face from where she laid, her head resting comfortably on the pillow.
“We were ambushed, none of us got away unscathed, well…those of us that did get away…” Damian mumbled the last part his face hardening but his large brilliant blue eye seemed to be so full of sorrow that it stabbed at Keara’s heart.
“What do you mean Damian, who…”The young tribal swallowed, her heart sinking into her stomach before she was able to continue, “Who didn’t make it back? We were ambushed, but then what happened?” Keara urged gently placing her soft palm over the male’s rougher hand for a moment before returning it to rest over her blanket covered bust. In return Damian smiled feebly up at her, which was an awkward image, with blood dripping down his cheek.
“We were ambushed when our squad was split up, and Kaoru and Suzu were unable to reach us in time. We had been surrounded, I tried my best, but I couldn’t get there in time…” at this the dragon male suddenly became more aggressive his hands clenching repeatedly, “If only I had been stronger, hell even faster, it was a whole damn raiding party of Blood Fangs, even commanded by one of Mikar’s captains!” Damian fell silent as he stared at the ground for a moment. Anger washed over his face while he clenched his fists until blood stained his palms. The sun-kissed male began shaking with his growing anger. “If I was stronger…..you wouldn’t have died...” He finally mustered in low whisper. “You died because I was too weak to protect you.” He said again. “It’s my fault…if I…” He trailed off seemingly deep in thought once more before finally saying“I’m sorry Keara…I pray that someday you’ll be able to forgive me…if only he had taught me the spell...I would have used it instead…”
Keara felt tears brimming her eyes, there was only one other male in their squad, her elder brother of two years, it felt like her blood had turned to ice, “Damian, what happened to Synoki? What did he do?” she asked sitting back up her voice cracking with worry.
At this Damian stared straight at her his jaw tight as if he was fighting back his own tears, “Keara, you are so lucky, he loved you so much...Synoki...he, damn it, he used Sacrifice, he took your place in death, I am so sorry…”
Keara froze letting the information process in her mind, Synoki was dead, he died to save her, “No…that’s impossible, he has a baby, and this was supposed to be his last mission! You’re lying!” But even as she said this tears were streaming freely down her face. He was gone, forever…
“You’re lying!” She screamed, her voice being carried down the halls.
