Vay and Consecreth
Vay looked down at her list, and sighed. It seemed to be growing every day these days. The sickest were at the top, and those that seemed a bit better off were down at the bottom. She had been working all morning, doing rounds, and now she was near the middle of her list.
Drusilla.
Who was Drusilla? While the plague rampaging Pern was not a social acitvity it seemed as Vay was meeting more and more weyrfolk lately. Being a generally amiable person, she didn't mind. She carefully readjusted the cloth mask she wore over the lower half of her face, straightened her crisp white overrobe, and strode to Drusilla's room.
Inside, she found the girl vomiting over a bucket. With a grimace, invisible because of the mask, Vay hurried forward, kneeling and holding the young woman's hair back.
"I'm Vay. I'm the Healer on duty today," she said, hoping that she wouldn't seem startling or obtrusive. "Take your time, dear," she continued softly. "The apprentice will be here shortly with some medicines."
Ila, Vay's young apprentice, had had to go all the way to the infirmary's storage to refill the shelves that had once been stocked full of remedies. All of the cough easers, the pain relievers, and the fever breakers were missing from the extensive network of shelves. Vay's brow crinkled as she wondered how much was left in storage. It wasn't the appropriate time of the year to find herbal cures growing. Ah, well. She and Consecreth would personally go to the southern continent if she had to. There was bound to be something there.

Vay and Consecreth
"Journeywoman metalsmith?" Vay asked, with an arch of her eyebrows. Briefly she wondered what a journeywoman metalsmith was doing in Telgar Weyr, but refrained from asking. "Do you work with gems? I'm in the mood for a bit of new jewelery and after you're feeling better perhaps I could commission you," she continued instead, her brown eyes flicking toward the green firelizard on the cot. "But look at me! Now isn't the time for business, is it?" she asked, her eyes resting on Drusilla once again.
The young apprentice, called Ila, cleared her throat gently from the doorway. She caught Vay's attention and held up a white canvas bag full of natural remedies. Vay felt herself smile in relief. "Ila, if I could trouble you to go get this young woman some fresh robes, as well as a basin full of water, and a drudge to tidy up this room a little bit, I'd be grateful." Ila nodded, set the bag down, and was gone once again.
"Now, dear, I know you must be feeling awful," Vay said. "but if you could specify exactly which type of awful you feel, I would appreciate it."

Vay and Consecreth
"Mm .." Vay murmured to herself, rummaging through her bag. The bag seemed not to have a bottom, and from it Vay pulled out a small skin of wine and a vial of a dark colored liquid. "Basil," she said by way of explanation.
"Basil can treat nausea, feverish illnesses, and exhaustion," she said in a tone that indicated she was repeating her lessons. Her nimble fingers were busy uncorking, pouring, corking, and all other sorts of manipulations. She soon had the mixture read. "I can't promise that it will taste well, of course, but it shouldn't be too bad," she said, proferring the skin that now contained wine and a liquid made from boiling basil. "Drink this and then we'll see what we can do about the cold."
