This is a documentary about a woman who had an abortion and, despite social stigma, is stepping up to talk about her personal expirience with it. You may have heard of her, it's Lindsay Ellis, the Nostalgia Chick from the That Guy With The Glasses website. Unlike most abortion films, it's not pro-life or pro-choice. It talks about the woman going through it, and shows that it's not such a black and white issue. It talks about the social stigma and taboo, how women who've gone through it feel about it, and how it affects the people around them.
Currently Ellis is trying to raise money to have it shown at film festivals. I think there's a website where you can give a donation and you'll recieve a copy of the film in return. I'm gonna try and find the link and maybe I'll get a copy myself. I want to see this movie for a few reasons. One, I just find the topic interesting. Usually the pro and anti sides are just screaming at each other, you don't hear much from the actual women who went through with it. Two... It's Lindsay Ellis. I've been watching her videos before she had the abortion and before she spoke about it, and I never really thought about it, but one kind of views the topic differently when it's someone you "know". Even though I don't personally know her, I am still familiar with her, and the topic just feels different when the woman is someone you've been familiar with for a while vs. some random chick you've never met and never will meet. My stance on abortion is not changed in the least, of course, I still believe in the right to choose, but now I just kind of think more about it.
On a side note... One interesting tidbit I got from the ad and movie webpage: one in three women will have an abortion in their lifetime. Meaning, most people probably know at least one woman who has done it. Which begs the question: what would a person, regardless of how they feel about the issue, think if someone close to them had an abortion?
