I wouldn't mind, but it's just on and on and on, about things that could probably be resolved in one chapter (or even as a recap in someone else's chapter).

Instead of 200 pages of we walked down the road and saw dead bodies, and more dead bodies, and more crap that at this point doesn't seem to have any real bearing on anything (like oh yay, someone else is pretending to be the Hound... who F-ing cares), and then this and this and this... just a simple - We arrived and "trip sucked", and a few highlights, and then .
I knooooow omg. It's like, I can understand wanting to connect in that "This s**t was serious, there's lots of dead people" way, but every time a main character is wandering about, it's a lenghty description of all the dead bodies they're passing and s**t. We get it. There are dead bodies. It's war. Yes.

And yes, the Hound...I don't even...

I'm also starting to get annoyed at the fact that he clearly was not able to come up with unique names for any of his characters - so many people have similar names, that other than the main ones, it's sometimes hard to keep them all straight.
I sort of get it, because I mean, how many people in schools have the same or similar sounding names, but I do agree that there are too many side characters that do pretty much the same thing and it's so confusing. My brain pretty much kicked all that s**t out.

I actually sort of like the Hound, I mean clearly a nasty piece of work, but sort of like his namesake - he only does what he's been taught. It's clear that he's better than that in some ways, will be interesting to see how that plays out in the end.

... of course we'll all be old and gray before we ever get to the end at the current rate. blaugh

Finished Dance with Dragons... and now all that is left is the LONG wait.

Wiki says "The Winds of Winter" should be out sometime in 2013, but also mentions that he's only got about 400 (out of 1500+) pages written as of October, so not holding on to any sort of expectations of when it might actually be out.

*sigh*

Yeah, I still have to even start Dance with Dragons. Might be easier to read it as a book instead of a PDF, so that means I'll have to wait for the paperback to release and be cheap (right.)

And holy hell, these books are so looooooong. Wasn't the first one originally published in 'parts'?

You've got plenty of time to read it. xd

Not sure about the first one, but it wouldn't surprise me. I think he originally was writing it as a TV show, but then turned it into a novel, because at the time no one was interested in producing it. Which is probably why it's soooooo descriptive and all, but ugghhh...

For those of you who've read the books (or some of them) and have watched the series, are the discrepancies really blatant and annoying, or is it bearable.

I've been debating watching it, but really don't know if I can deal with stupid changes, if there is no real purpose behind it.

I think it's bearable. The TV series got rid of a lot of characters and blended them into one, generally more of the main characters, so that confusion is a bit absent. It also, for obvious reasons, cut out a lot of the dry downtime and useless events that were mostly fillers for the books anyway.

There were a couple things that I was kinda bummed over, because they were things I thought were important, but I can't remember what those are now.

Well, I started with the series and am about 2/3 of the way through the first book so I'm coming at it from the other direction, but they seem to keep rather closely to the books. The books are more fleshed out, some of the characters look a little different, Sansa and Daenerys have been aged up a couple of years, some conversations are had by different characters or created wholesale because the characters aren't thinking at you like in books, but the differences are all relatively minor and you can understand why they had to or chose to things the way they did.

Two examples jump to mind straight off the bat. In the books, the story of the Mountain and the Hound is told by the Hound to Sansa, but in the show Littlefinger (I think?) whispers it to her while they watch the joust. The other is Daenerys and Drogo's wedding, when they ride off together into the sunset and make sweet love by the river or whatever. In the show they end that scene much earlier, so you're left with the impression that she remained not into it the whole time, not that he seduced her with his magic fingers and she was a willing participant.

Tbh they did a really impressive job. Again I'm only on the first book, but I'd say this is up there with Silence of the Lambs for quality book-to-screen adaptations.

That's cool. I'm always so wary of book to movie/tv show translations, that I automatically assume they are going to suck. Good to know at least someone gets it right from time to time.

You guys won't believe how long it took me to realise Dany's pet knight and the Old Bear were actually related. I'd keep thinking "Ser Mormont... no wait, Mormont is the Watch guy. What was his name, then??"

Yeah, there are a lot of inter-related characters. It gets confusing sometimes too, because even when people aren't related, they have similar sounding names. Almost need a cheat sheet to keep it all straight.

I finally got to watch episodes 1 and 2 yesterday though!!!! Netflix has the first couple seasons on DVD, so I've got them all on order. XD

I found the first part of the first season a little dull, but once they got past all the introducing of ALL THE ******** CHARACTERS and set a decent plot, it gets better.
