THE HILLDORNE

The Hilldorne is a rocky and hilly area of land stretching across central Oria It is quite a barren place, compared to the fertile grasslands to the south-east. The Hilldorne is home to many wild sheep, goats, and rabbits, but barely any people. There are many rumors of the Hilldorne, most about evil spirits or ghosts who haunt the land and keep it barren.

Criminals and thieves often use the Hilldorne as a hiding place, digging hideouts in the hills. Travelers should be cautious.

Hilldorne. The barran waste land to the North in the land of Oria. There are few animals that live here, and the ones that do are tough and mean. The land is desolate, harsh and black. The people who live here aren't any different. The wind howls almost constantly over the rocky plain, giving it a mixed feeling of uneasiness and sorrow. Sometimes, one can almost hear screams of the dearly departed. Tales of terrible past horrors fill the history of this place. The land itself seems to moan in agaony at night in this place. This is not a place where people come for a vacation. Only the darkest, most vile, wanted criminals dare brave this dead land. Travellers give it a wide bearth, not wanting to test the tales of ghosts and and evil spirits. It is not a place of the feint of heart or the weak of mind. And it is most definately not a place for a sixteen year old girl to be living alone. But here is where Jaylin Mocker lives.

Jaylin lives on the East-side of the Northen-most river in the Hilldurne. She has been there about a month now, that being how long her mother has been dead. She had lived in the Skale Forest, just a few miles deep. Her mother always had the emergency stock ready, incase they had to flee their home. So when the soldiers came looking for them, her mother gave her everything that Jaylin would need, and told her to run. Of course, the girl had started to run, but hid herself and watched. Once she saw her mother murdered by the very soldiers who used to laugh with them, she truly ran. When she exited the Forest, she was on the West-side of the river. The soldiers found her trail quickly, however, and followed suit. Distraught as she was over her mother's death, she didn't try to hide her trail very hard. Her saving grace was the Hilldurne. The soldiers wouldn't even try to enter it, let alone cross it. Also, most of them knew Jaylin's family, and couldn't bring themselves to kill the sole survivor of it. That, and they believed she earned that pendant, it was supposed to be her's anyways.

After a week, Jaylin dared to venture to the Forest again, needing logs to build her shack on the desolate plain. It took many trips with the stout little black horse, but she eventually got all that she needed. She even built a little lean-to for Shade to get out of the wind. Despite having very little with her, she made quite a 'cozey' home for herself on the Hilldorne. Yes, the land was covered with other criminals and thieves, but they were far and few in betweem. She has run into one or two others on the dead field of rock, but she chased them away before they could snag anything of her's. And besides, I know how to use these very well... She thought to herself as she sharpened her knives with a wet-stone. She sharpened and cleaned them daily, needing something to entertain her mind. Though not overly working on the mind, it brought a calmness to normally her troubled and saddened thoughts. As much as she tried not to think about it, she couldn't help but remember her mother, and her father too.

Jaylin had finished with her long knife, the last one she had to do for today. She went to check on her stout, little black horse with a white mane and a tail. Yes, he was an odd looking mount, but she wouldn't trade him for the world. After making sure his water was good, she returned to her bed roll, finguring the the pendant hanging from her neck. It was her father's, before he was killed in a stupid skirmish over a rumor. She didn't know what that rumor was, and her mother never told her. That's one thing I'll never know... She closed her eyes, remembering one of the many times her father told her the story behind the pendant.

*FLASHBACK*

Jaylin was sitting on living room floor, staring at her father with bright, vibrant eyes. Her hair was about waist-length, her skin soft and pale. She was only eight at the time, but this would be one of the last times she got to spend such a happy evening with her entire family. Her father was sitting on the large, high back chair to the left of the fire pit. He always looked young for his age. Her mother was sitting on the smaller chair directly opposite of her father's. He was smiling at her, a twinkle in his eye. He reached down his shirt-neck, bringing out the glittering pendant that he always wore. "You know the story of this jewel?" He asked, even though she has heard this story since she was little. She shook her head enthusiastically. "Well then, let me tell you. A long, long time ago, our ancestors landed in this land that we call Oria. They were fleeing marauders that were after them. When they landed, they mostly stayed in a stronghold, which is now the Capital, Indar. However, there were a select few that wanted to go explore. This brave group went to the Ridgeback Mountains, not knowing the terror that lay in wait for them." He paused, chuckling at Jaylin's anticipating expression.

"Well, on one particularly difficult day, the group came upon a trapped Ridgeback Dragon. It was a young one, and hadn't paid attention to the mountain like it should. A boulder had pinned one of it's wings underneath it. When the group saw it, they immediately wanted to kill the creature. But one man disagreed with them. He stepped up and convinced the group that helping the poor beast would benefit them. After all, if they show kindness to the inhabitants of the land they were now living in, they would be showed kindness in turn. So, after many hours of working and pushing, they finally got the heavy boulder off of the young Dragon's wing. However, the young Dragon's mother arrived. She saw a bunch of strange creature's around her child, and her child was injured. She went to attack them, but suddenly her injured child jumped to their defense. After a few tense minutes of them growling at each other, the mother walked over to the man that saved the young Dragon's life. She lowered her head, a single tear rolled down her scaley cheek. He held out his hands, and when the tear landed in his gloved hands, it turned into a gleaming gem stone. She also gave him one other thing. Very carefully, she plucked a scale from her shoulder, and placed it in his outstretched hands. When it touced his gloves, the scale turned into a round pendant with a golden symbol on it. With that, the dragonness grabbed her child, and left. While they continued they're journey through the mountains, he created a beaded necklace out of the gleaming jewel and dark pendant. They ran into more Dragon's but once they saw the necklace he wore, they left him alone." He paused again when he heard his daughter yawn loudly

"And once he returned home, he told his son the magnificant story. Then, when it was his time to go to the After Life, he gave his son the pendant necklace. And he passed on to his son, and his son passed it on, and so it was passed down through the generations." He picked up the pendant again, allowing the light from the fire to dance on the glittering gem. "Until it got to me. My father told me that this was the symbol of a Dragon's Friend, and the Dragon's won't harm us upon seeing it. He also told me that no matter what happens, this pendant will not blemish or break. And one day, it will be your's." He said, barely able to keep himself from laughing at the excitement growing on the young girl's face. "But now, it's time for bed."....

*END FLASHBACK*

Jaylin sighed as the memory faded again. She used to love that story. All of the exciement and adventure in it made her long to go out on her own. But, I longed for nothing more than to hear him tell me that...But all good things must come to an end...Right, mother? She closed her eyes, letting go of the pendant. She put both of her hands behind her head, staring up at the roof of her small hut. She remembered what the pendant had cost her. He was a pig anyways...He knew this belonged in my family...And he took my mother's life for it. Jewelry is not worth this...Even if the story is true. Yes, she loved the story, but she didn't know if she believed it or not. But, I'm not going to test it any time soon...And I'm not giving up this pendant for anything...It cost way too much. She thought darkly, sighing as she settled in to take a short nap.
