I found a copy of the album at a record store today in a neighboring city....I didn't buy it. I bought Nightwish's greatest hits instead. I'll probably get the album once I learn more about the show, though. It does sound fascinating.

It's definitely getting a fan base because I walked by the theatre at 8am Saturday morning and there were about 20 teenagers waiting on line. No other show, not Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, or Rent had anyone on line that early in the morning. I haven't seen anything like it since I waited all night for tickets to some play I forgot the name of. And I didnt' get them for myself I got them for some friends.

Really great people are learning about the show and eager to see it.

By the way, it seems that every generation has a musical that is rebellious in nature. The seventies had Hair, The nineties had Rent, and now we have Spring Awakening.

Okay so watching the previews on YouTube has made me want it. BAD. I now regret the Nightwish album, much as I love them, and wish I had bought the Spring Awakening soundtrack instead. That music rocks like AMAZING. And the story, from what skimpy outline I've read, sounds pretty freaking tight.

A friend was suppose to burn me a copy before she left for the summer, but when I didn't see her before she headed home... I caved and bought the CD.

I want to see this SO bad now.

Honestly, the more I listen to it the more I love it. It's kind cool too, because I got a copy of the album at a time when me and a friend kind of fell into a friend with benifits kind of relationship by pure accident so all the stuff about giving into your physical desires even if you shouldn't became really relevant to me all of a sudden.

I think that's why it's gaining so much popularity with teenagers- we all relate to it.

That's my revelation on Spring Awakening xD

I really want to see the show though.

OKAY! Went to see it today. Critique as follows...

It was pretty good! The music was OUTSTANDING! Some of the best music and best voices I have heard in a LONG time. It proves to that you don't need to be a Broadway vet to be Broadway worthy. Most of the actors were young kids debuting in this show.

Omg, my favorite part of the show was the lighting. Oh GOD the lightning! I was memorized. They did this one thing where the actor was rising while this blue lights were flown in, it really looked like stars ascending from heaven. It was amazing! They NEED to win the Tony for lighting! Seriously!

Someone said earlier in the thread that "My Junk" made the audience more uncomfortable then "I Believe," but let me say unless they changed the staging of either one since then, I don't see how that is possible. The audience was like literally falling out their seats laughing at "My Junk." They LOVED it, but I heard from about every single person sitting around me at intermission talking about how the sex scene made them feel insanely uncomfortable. I don't know. It was a little bit shocking I guess, but it was not as bad as Sean made it out to be.

The thing that I DIDN'T like about the show though was that while the story was REALLY interesting, deep, and sad... it lacked a solid through line that tied the plot together from start to finish. There was a serious lack of character development in all the character MINUS the three main ones. They had to much development while the secondary and minor characters had ZERO development.

Overall, a definite must see for hardcore theatre people and those into shows that twist the arm of traditional musical theatre, but if you are really not into presentational theatre and racy themes, you might want to avoid it. There are no big show stopping song and dance numbers, so if that's the only kind of musical you like, this is not the thing for you.

I haven't been able to go to see the actual musical yet, but I have the soundtrack and, hey, youtube! I can't stop listening to it, it's so catchy and enjoyable. I don't doubt that it will get very close to, if not surpass, Rent's notoriety.

I was so skeptical of the show... and then I saw it. Amazing. The best part was that I got the final rush tickets, but the best seats in the house. It was limited view, but I could only not see the onstage audience. And since I was in a box, I was close but still got the upstage action. My favorite number was We're F***ed. The audience cheered for a full minute. Meeting the cast afterwards was awesome, especially because John Gallagher Jr was the nicest, most personable actor I have ever met stage dooring.

I had originally decided to see it on a whim since I thought it would be laughably bad (according to some people I had considered reliable sources). I am so glad that I got tickets, since it has moved onto my list of favorite shows of all time. I've decided to stop listening to people's opinions of shows if they haven't seen it yet.

My favorite number was We're F***ed.

Agreed. That number had SO much energy and you could just tell the cast was having pure fun.

It's going on tour and coming to San Francisco! I'm excited to see it again, plus take Freshmen Honors students from my school to experience it. I hope that they do a good job at choosing a touring cast. I realize that the cast recording does not nearly do the live experience as much justice as it should.

All I know is that it got a lot of Tonys but I had no idea what it was about. But it sounds so funny and crazy! Now I want to see! blaugh

Ohhh Spring Awakening. My new favorite musical. I love it so much. I havent been able to see it yet, but I have seen it online.
If you go to Google video, and type in "SpringAwakening.mp4" You can see the ENTIRE off broadway show, original cast. It's not the most current version, but it's fabulous nonetheless. (and relatively good quality for an online video) biggrin

I saw it last night and was stunned. I could not BELIEVE how amazing it was. The cast was sooo energetic and really brought the audience in, and oh my goodness, the LIGHTING! AHH! IT WAS SOOO AMAZING! It really highlighted the show (aaaahhahaha, an awful pun!)
Anyway, I agree about the lack of character developement outside of the main three. There was a lot of just random "Oh hey!" moments if you get what I mean, but all in all, it did not distract me. I was so busy being drawn in and in love that I didn't care. I can see how "I Believe" was shocking for something (I, for one, was VERY surprised to see some breast, but quickly got over it and thought "well, I've got them too...") And really, "My Junk" was HILARIOUS. I could not get over how great it was to see someone getting it off to Othello! I was just so glad that I experienced seeing that show. It was amazing, especially to myself, who is almost 20 so totally in their target audience.
I met the cast afterwards, which was super fun. They were all genuinely happy to talk to people (our Melchoir was very attractive and SUPER talented so I told him right away that I loved him and he laughed and hugged me) and there was a guy there who went to my college! It was great to see a success story in person. My goodness, it was a fantastic night.
Also, I dunno about anyone else, but did your off-stage actors really get into the music. I was sort of distracted by the Ilsa as she sat with the onstage audience because she was really into the music. But so was the entire pit. Everyone just seemed to into the show, so very much in love.
It's really the kind of show that reminds me why I love what I do.
