OKAY! Went to see it today. Critique as follows...
It was pretty good! The music was OUTSTANDING! Some of the best music and best voices I have heard in a LONG time. It proves to that you don't need to be a Broadway vet to be Broadway worthy. Most of the actors were young kids debuting in this show.
Omg, my favorite part of the show was the lighting. Oh GOD the lightning! I was memorized. They did this one thing where the actor was rising while this blue lights were flown in, it really looked like stars ascending from heaven. It was amazing! They NEED to win the Tony for lighting! Seriously!
Someone said earlier in the thread that "My Junk" made the audience more uncomfortable then "I Believe," but let me say unless they changed the staging of either one since then, I don't see how that is possible. The audience was like literally falling out their seats laughing at "My Junk." They LOVED it, but I heard from about every single person sitting around me at intermission talking about how the sex scene made them feel insanely uncomfortable. I don't know. It was a little bit shocking I guess, but it was not as bad as Sean made it out to be.
The thing that I DIDN'T like about the show though was that while the story was REALLY interesting, deep, and sad... it lacked a solid through line that tied the plot together from start to finish. There was a serious lack of character development in all the character MINUS the three main ones. They had to much development while the secondary and minor characters had ZERO development.
Overall, a definite must see for hardcore theatre people and those into shows that twist the arm of traditional musical theatre, but if you are really not into presentational theatre and racy themes, you might want to avoid it. There are no big show stopping song and dance numbers, so if that's the only kind of musical you like, this is not the thing for you.

Mister My favorite number was We're F***ed.
Agreed. That number had SO much energy and you could just tell the cast was having pure fun.
Quote: Meeting the cast afterwards was awesome, especially because John Gallagher Jr was the nicest, most personable actor I have ever met stage dooring.
Again, so true. I adore that kid =)
Quote: I've decided to stop listening to people's opinions of shows if they haven't seen it yet.
GREAT plan.

I saw it last night and was stunned. I could not BELIEVE how amazing it was. The cast was sooo energetic and really brought the audience in, and oh my goodness, the LIGHTING! AHH! IT WAS SOOO AMAZING! It really highlighted the show (aaaahhahaha, an awful pun!) Anyway, I agree about the lack of character developement outside of the main three. There was a lot of just random "Oh hey!" moments if you get what I mean, but all in all, it did not distract me. I was so busy being drawn in and in love that I didn't care. I can see how "I Believe" was shocking for something (I, for one, was VERY surprised to see some breast, but quickly got over it and thought "well, I've got them too...") And really, "My Junk" was HILARIOUS. I could not get over how great it was to see someone getting it off to Othello! I was just so glad that I experienced seeing that show. It was amazing, especially to myself, who is almost 20 so totally in their target audience. I met the cast afterwards, which was super fun. They were all genuinely happy to talk to people (our Melchoir was very attractive and SUPER talented so I told him right away that I loved him and he laughed and hugged me) and there was a guy there who went to my college! It was great to see a success story in person. My goodness, it was a fantastic night. Also, I dunno about anyone else, but did your off-stage actors really get into the music. I was sort of distracted by the Ilsa as she sat with the onstage audience because she was really into the music. But so was the entire pit. Everyone just seemed to into the show, so very much in love. It's really the kind of show that reminds me why I love what I do.
