As soon as Debra saw Sofia's bedroom, she couldn't stop herself from remarking, "Obviously you never let your husband in here for long. Too feminine for a guy like him. I love it!" Debra was expecting to see some first-rate photography, and she wasn't disappointed. When she was looking at the black and white photo, she said with a smile, "Hey, if you need a caption for this one, you could call it 'The Nose Knows'!" Debra admired the photo of the ballet dancer as much as the others, if not more so. "This is so perfect!" she said confidently, "I would totally miss this shot. You know, you've got yourself set up for two great careers, as a painter and as a photographer, and I'm not talking about working at a photo studio at a mall. You could pull in some big bucks as a freelance photographer."

Football practice was an intense session that afternoon, with the team making their final preparations for the next day's game. One advantage was that it was going to be a home game. Alex felt that the team was as ready as it was going to be. He knew that Sofia was going to be playing with the band during the game, but he didn't find any credibility in the rumors that he had heard that she would be playing the drums. That just didn't sound right. As soon as the practice was over, he returned to his apartment. "I'm home! Is dinner ready?" he called out, as he always did, but this time he added, "By the way, did you see that photo of Brandy that was hanging all over the school? Whoever took it is a genius!" He didn't realize it, but he had just paid his wife a big compliment, even if it was unintentional.

Alex really wasn't surprised to see that Debra was joining them for dinner, although he had to wonder about why she seemed to be so adverse to going home. Neither Sofia nor Debra seemed to have anything to say to him, like the night before. In time, Alex decided to include himself in their conversation, and so at the first break, he asked Debra, "Are you going to the game tomorrow afternoon?" Debra gave him an 'Are you stupid or something?' look and replied, "Not likely. A bunch of guys knocking each other into the ground while trying to carry a ball from one end of a field to the other isn't something that I find to be entertaining." Alex was more or less expecting that kind of a response, but he wasn't going to be put off that easily, and so he said, "If you're not interested in the game, you could come to listen to the band. I'm sure that by now Sofia has told you that she plays in the band, and she might have mentioned that we do have an award-winning marching band." Looking at Sofia, he then asked, "Isn't there a competition of some kind coming up soon?" Alex would know all about it if it was a sporting event, but as it was, band competitions were low on his list of priorities.

"A marching band, huh?" Debra said "Now that's the kind of entertainment that I can appreciate! There's nothing like the skill and precision that you see in a marching band's performance." To tell the truth, she really wasn't quite that excited about the band, but she would stay to watch the marching band because Sofia would be playing, and she guessed that her remark wouldn't sit well with Alex. He apparently understood the implied poke at him because he was bristling a little as he said, "There is a lot of skill and precision in playing football too, you know! I'd like to see how well you could take a snap, roll to the right, find your receiver, and put the ball right on target while a linebacker is charging straight at you." "While that does sound impressive, you have to admit that it doesn't always work that way. I've seen enough football to know that sometimes the difference between a catch and an incomplete pass is pure, dumb luck," Debra countered, and then she grinned at Sofia as she added, "The marching band doesn't depend on luck, does it, Sofia?"

It was somewhat amazing that Sofia had spoken on Alex's behalf, even if she was referring to football players in general. Not exactly full support, but that was fine. Just for the record, though, he remarked, "Football really isn't that risky." Debra smirked at him and replied, "If that's true, then why do you wear that helmet and all of those pads? Still, Sofia does have a good point. If someone works hard at being the best at something, he or she should get the credit for all of his or her work." "What is it that you work hard at to be the best?" Alex then inquired. After thinking for a moment, Debra replied, "Annoying the heck out of other people." "That doesn't sound like something that I would brag about." Alex remarked. Debra merely shrugged and replied, "It's what I do."
