PROLOGUE

For over 40 years the world had been at peace.
The smoke and ashes from the fires of war had long since blown in the wind.
And the bones of its victims and soldiers had been resting peacefully beneath poppies and roses.

What had been the longest and the most violent war in history, had worthy rewards. The elves were free from their slavery and at this point were even attempting to rebuild what was left of their culture. The synthetics had earned their freedom as well and were more welcomed among all societies.
Prejudice and discrimination still occurred, as ignorance is always present, but only in small quantities.
The overall society which was filled with the children who had been born among those fires and bones of war though, were eager to coexist among the other intelligent creatures.

However,
Though the mortals had found their peace.
The deities above them had not.

The Sun god Illanga was content in his position of power but that was merely because he had the most of it. His only competition was the Moon Goddess Dolos but they were known to be lovers and had, had two divine children.
The Moonlight and the Stars.
Below them were the half gods: The Guardian of the Heaven's, Everlynn, and The Guardian of the Inferno, Vurtuna. As always with the afterlife guardians, there is disagreement on who gets what souls, but thus far, there had been no serious conflict. Angels and Demons alike played a healthy competition on gathering the dead.

Yet an unseen darkness had been brewing for centuries and had now suddenly erupted.
Four terrible beasts had been born, each set out to devour every world.
Sabh, the eldest, chased the spirits.
Ajana tormented the Angels of Heaven.
Aljahim brought horror to the demons.
And Albah, the youngest, feasted on mortal flesh.

War was awoken from his time of rest and promptly put to work again.
Every world was rebelling but none were able to put an end to these beasts.
They only delayed the seemingly inevitable apocalypse.
More horrible news had yet to come though.
The two children of the sun and moon, whom were considered the only promising hero's to end the beasts, soon vanished after the appearance of the monsters.
Quickly after their disappearance both the reason why and the mother of these beasts were revealed.
Dolos, The Moon Goddess, had been consumed by an unknown darkness.
Now desiring eternal night she created these monsters to gain power and had cast her two children away so that they could not stop her.

Hope seemed lost. The apocalypse had come to destroy this still young world.

That was until a small incident occurred among an elf and a spirit.
One that would awaken the most powerful spirit known.
The Spirit of Life.
Separated into five different pieces, each piece had been slumbering in hidden places of every world.
No one had ever seen one before.
It was thought to be a legend to even the gods.
But some of the humans had claimed to see the one that had slumbered in the mortal realm. They described it as a light green translucent elk with a large white flower blooming on its back and other plants growing every-else on its body. Wherever it stepped plants birthed and died. Where ever it dwelled, the spirits bowed down to it.
They also gossiped and spread the tale that the Elk of l=Life seemed to be traveling with a little snow elf girl. It is unknown of this is true or not but the Church of Illanga is taking it seriously. As far as the religion could stretch it, they spread word of huge reward to any person who found the spirit of life and/or the elf girl and brought it to them. Adventurer's who fantasied to be true hero's began to hunt out in search of this mythical pair.

This story begins with the adventurers who ended up finding them.

"Midt i nord, midt i syd, midt i vest, midt i øst.
hun vågner op fra jorden
og udforsker for kærlighed igen...."

The Guildhall had a particularly heavy flow of traffic this morning.
Ever since word of the Spirit and the Elf had been posted on the boards, adventurers of all kinds were flooding in and out of the Guild to gather recruits and share information.
Even the sleeping quarters had been full tonight, and many of the unlucky adventurers had set up camps outside. Being that it was just on the outskirts of town, there was thankfully plenty of room to set up tents nearby.
The kitchen was the busiest. The smell and sound of cooking sausages and eggs filled nearly the entire building as the chef and his sons rushed to cook for all the hungry warriors, who were practically pounding their fists on the table in impatience.

Because of how packed the building itself was, most of the recruiting was going on outside as adventurer's scoped to see who looked the strongest and most skilled.

Samson wandered around out here, looking for promising allies to share the wealth with, should they find the elf and the spirit. Which he certainly ******** planned on.

"WATCH IT YOU MANGLED WEATHER-BITTEN TYRANT!!!"
With his large and stocky figure in such a large crowd, Samson had been brushing shoulders with most people on accident. Each time apologizing profusely and then moving on without further issues. However, in this case he hadn't thought to look downwards. In a moment full of uncomfortableness, a dwarf who also wasn’t paying attention and had walked straight into into Sam. And uh, was just the right amount of height to suddenly find his face engulfed in man parts.

The dwarf pushed Sam backwards violently, his veins clearly pulsating from his red, swollen forehead.
"DON'T YOU LOOK WHERE YOU'RE GOING YOU QUALING BEEF-WITTED BUM-BAILEY?!"

Sam easily caught his footing as he stumbled backwards. Cheeks red, he tried to laugh the embarrassment off while scratching behind his ear.
"Sorry my friend, I didn't see you down there!
I suppose I just got a bit distracted.
Really sorry ‘bout that...”

This sheepish apology apparently wasn't enough for the dwarf. Raising his middle finger, he unleashed his rage on the half human by giving him the finger. <******** YOU, YAH DEW-BEATER!"

Taken aback, Sams smile dissipated as he processed the insult. .
What the ******** looked down and stared at the cherry faced dwarf.
oh man, Ami is going to kill me...
Oh ******** YOU YAH DALCOP!" He shouted back.
"AND YOUR MOTHER!"

Mother's were a touchy subject for dwarves.
"DON'T YOU BRING MY MOTHER INTO THIS!"
The 230 pound dwarf lunged at Sam, knocking him into the dirt.
He swung for Sam's face and hit him square in the cheek.
Then he swung again, but this time was caught by Sams hand.
Before the dwarf could react, he'd been headbutted clean on the forehead.
Dazed and dizzy, the dwarf was unable to fight back as Sam then swung him off of him.
Now Sam was on top, throwing punch after punch on the sturdy dwarf...

Adventer's nearby had made a clearing around the tumble, but most were not watching. Fights had become, unsurprisingly, increasingly common in the crowded guildhalls lately.
Those who were watching, were already passing coins around as they bet on the winner.....

-----

Meanwhile....

Because of the high amount of traffic flow going on in the building, the Guild Master had decided to make a few rules. Nobody but the guild leaders were allowed inside the reception halls. Here was where guild leaders signed up for missions for their party and were either approved or denied for them.

The church, who was paying the guild to send out adventer's for the elf and spirit, had requested that high standards be met for a party to be approved. The requirements could not be less than this:
1. There must be three or more party members in a group
2. All group members must be above at least silver rank (level 3)
3. You must have humane and approved restraint tools (rope, cage, ect...)
4. At least one party member needs to be knowledgeable in spirits

......

Audibly the dark elf sighed. Her hair was a mess. All she could manage this morning was to tie it up in a messy bun with some plain hair sticks. Her attire wasn't fancy either. She still wore her pajamas, which was just a white elven tunic. It's said that people often dress how they feel and in this case, that was definitely true. Amaris was feeling lethargic, hungry and honestly a bit anwry.

She'd been waiting in line at the reception area for nearly 20 minutes just so that she could be approved for the mission of the Spirit and the Elf. However, now even the receptionist was giving her issues.

"I mean...Don't you think you could make an acception in this case?" She pleaded to the guild representative, who sat indifferently behind his desk.

With nothing but a deadpan stare, he remained unnaturally still in his seat.
"Sorry Mam', rules are rules. Even for you and Sam."

"We are literally at the highest rank possible in the guild though." She stressed, "I don't think we really need another team member. If anything, they'll slow us down.
I REALLY think it'd be better if it could be just the two of us. The chances of us succeeding would be so much better because he and I have been partners for a long time. We've got good chemistry, good skills and excellent experience.
It would all just be ruined if we had a stranger with us on this mission."

The human shrugged unsympathetically.
"Rules are rules."

"Maybe I can speak to the guild master then."
Amaris was practically grinding her teeth.
It wasn't the fact that she couldn't bypass the rules. She'd already had sent Sam out to find someone or someone's to become apart of their party because she knew that it would be unlikely that she could.
It was just the amount of disrespect she was receiving from this man that made her want to reach out for his neck and....

"Guild Master is wandering around, enforcing rules." The man stated, interrupting her thoughts of violence.
"You'll have to try and find him if you really want to talk to him so badly."

Again she sighed. This time much more audibly and filled with much more frustration than last time.
"....
Alright." She forfeited.
"Thank you."
Scooting the chair backwards (and making sure it screeched), she then got up and headed straight towards the courtyard (another area barred off to most of the other adventurers).

The fresh air practically melted the tension away in her head.
She took a deep breathe and embraced the smell of the garden around her.
"I guess I'll just take a walk while I wait for Sam....", she whispered to herself.
She nodded, as if she needed to approve of her own idea.

In bare feet, she took a stroll around the gardens.
Keeping eye out for anyone of interest...

(NOTE:
For those of you who might not know about guildhalls (I didn't before this), here's some information. Guildhalls are basically giant adventurer inn's. There's a kitchen, sleeping quarters, courtroom, reception, meeting rooms ect....
Here is where adventurer's sign up for missions and get paid for them.
Often missions require a minimum level of rank.
Ranks is skill and skill is based off of experience and completed missions.
In this particular guild, ranks from glass, bronze, silver, gold to platinum.
Glass being "you can barely kill rats" to platinum being "you've killed 20 dragons".
If you've got anymore questions lemme know, that's the basics.

ALSO YOU CAN POST NOW YAY.

Zion had been passing through the waves of gatherings, her small and slender frame slid easily past the crowds of people.
Unlike many of the other people, she traveled alone.
Clad in black apparel, Zion lifted her hood atop her head.
Her mind was set on making it to the Guildhall, where she had been a regular for the past two years.
A visible mask of annoyance had settled on her seemingly young face.
There were entirely too many people here.
And all of those people, to Zion, seemed entirely too sure of themselves.

Moving amidst the crowd, almost like a dance, she weaved and ducked and leaned to avoid their touch.
Her feet lightly and agilely pattered along the grass, her thin leather boots not making a sound in comparison of the roughage of hundreds of people.
As she elbowed through a wall of sweaty people, suddenly something caught at her ankle.
Zion nearly stumbled but her limbs reacted swiftly, catching herself.
She looked down slowly, her gaze practically dripping with an irritable venom.

A red, swollen, stubby dwarf hand had caught her ankle as she attempted to pass by the brawl.
It didn't seem that he had intentionally latched onto her ankle, as he was gripping the grass with his other hand.
Zion hadn't even noticed the fight going on so close to her.
They were happening so frequently and none of them posed any threat to her.
Just another exasperating interaction that caused her face to become even more chagrin than before.

However, in that moment, she couldn't help but notice how the little fellow was getting his face beat inwards.
Blood and already forming bruises were painted on his once rosy cheeks, likely pink from a strong mead.
Something ticked in Zion's head for half a second as she seemed to freeze and process the situation.
She thought faster than most organic beings, hell, she thought faster than most synths.
A second to Zion wouldn't even be enough for someone to blink.

In a rash decision, Zion bent down and caught the dwarf's wrist in her small, slender hand.
She yanked him to the side of the ring that was enclosed with people.
In the same movement, she grabbed the large man on top by the collar of his shirt/armor and tossed him back a step, correcting him to a standing position.
She was careful not to use excessive force, she didn't want to knock him on his a**.

Zion's electric green eyes bore into Sam's for a moment, her face nearly blank except for the slight grimace touching her lips and gently dipping her thin brows downwards.
Sam easily stood two heads taller than she, and yet she remained under a mask of nearly nothingness.
She straightened her posture, her small frame lost in her dark clothing.
The small girl stood between the dwarf and Sam for a moment.

"It was pride that turned the angels into devils. But it's humility that changes men to angels," She said quietly, her voice small but low and rich, nearly melodic.
Zion rarely spoke, but when she did, most people would listen.
She slowly looked between the two scrappers, her haunting illuminated gaze narrowed.

Without another word, she stuffed her hands into her pockets and pushed through the people.
As if nothing happened, she continued making her way towards the Guildhall.

OPERATIONAL ZONE BREACHED. COMMENCE OPERATION IN 3... 2... 1... ACTIVE SCANNING ENABLED. ACQUIRE TARGET DEAD OR ALIVE, FALSE IDENTITY SUSPECTED.
The long coat was dusty, the faceplate covered by a half-inch thick iron mask.
Their wearer had been walking a long ways, seldom stopping for rest or much talk.
He knew where he was, being reasonably familiar with the city and its' layout.
This part of it didn't often get his attention.
If he were a registered name, he wasn't sure where on their rankings he'd end up.
Clockson wasn't much for the Guild. He had certain opinions about authority, and they didn't often match up with this organization's.
Not unusual by itself, certainly, but with freelance work, it was much simpler to instruct an employer where to stick it.
Not always wiser, but those were the risks of freelancing.

Within a few moments of the old A.I.'s arrival, there was a fight in progress.
More accurately, he'd only become aware of it once the crowd thinned enough to allow aural detection.
A young lady in black was just giving the boys a lesson in manners, breaking it up before he got within twenty feet.
He didn't catch much of her speech, but it looked to have been brief anyhow.
Besides, it wasn't his business.

Weaving through the crowd of sellswords took maybe half a minute before reaching his destination.
To general surprise, it wasn't the signing desk.
An antique service pistol, an early double barrel, pressed to the back of the dwarf's head.
The hammers clicking back added a certain something to the crowd's bustle. One of those moments before hell breaks loose, for example.
TARGET LOCATED. WANTED FOR ARSON, VANDALISM, ROBBERY, GRAND THEFT, HAVOC, ASSORTED WAR CRIMES. HALF-BOUNTY PENALTY FOR DECEASED RETRIEVAL.
"I do hate to ruin a ruined date, neighbor, but this man's under arrest.
Don't know how he's known here, but his real name's Verdus Muil.
Just gonna trot 'im off to talk to some friends with the Lambs, an' you can pick things up with them, hey?"
Somehow, even with a gun pointing at another man's thinking pan, the words were relaxed, calm and just shy of friendly.
Of course, this clearly didn't extend to the target, who knew just what could happen if violence broke out again.
Should the mark make a run for it, he'd take a bullet in the leg before he got two feet...

What a beautiful, serene day it is...
Amaris thought to herself as she weaved through the pleasant, rose aura filled garden.
Besides wanting to throttle guild members, today has really just turned out to be perfectly boring.
Even in her tunic, the assassin felt like a princess right now.
Today was just unrealistically perfect.
This only seemed more true when a robotic butler approached her with a silver platter that balanced cups of tea and water on it.
"A drink ma'm?"

"Oh mylanta, yes!
Thank you!"
With mindful, delicate fingers she grabbed the tea cup and thanked the butler once more before he walked off.
Continuing her blissful walk, she took a sip and hummed in delight.
"Lavender Lemon tea, my favorite... heart "

Seriously, how much more perfectly calm could this day be?
Absolutely nothing could ruin it, not even Sam...

----------------

Sam once again found himself being pushed backwards.
But this time it wasn't a small, chunky dwarf.
Now it was a small, almost childlike girl with lightening green eyes.
Today is ********' weird.
He thought to himself as he regained his composure and straightened his buttoned shirt.

He stood back, his eyebrows raised as he listened to her haunting voice.
Somehow, the small girl was managing to make him feel ashamed, which was a real feat with him.
He scratched the back of his head, as he always did when he felt anxious as he looked downwards.
Just before she walked away, he managed to pathetically apologize to her.
"Sorry..."

Looking back up, he watched her leave and weave her tiny frame through the crowd.
Only when she was already ten feet from him, did it click in his mind that he should try to recruit her.
He stepped forward, eager to leave the bruised and buzzed dwarf behind him and instead talk to the mystery green girl.
"H-Hey! Wait!"
But then he heard the click of a gun, and another damn spooky voice talking behind him.
He spun around on his heels and looked, ready to be even more bewildered.
The dwarf had a gun on his head and was now apparently being arrested.
"What the bloody ********", he whispered to himself aloud.

The dwarf slowly rid his hands up.
"I-I think you've got the wrong fellah stranger.
I'm just an adventurer, lookin' to find a crew to find the spirit.
If you'll just let me go, I'll be on mah wa-"
Before he even finished his sentence, the dwarf took off in a hurry.
Being slow, big and stalky, it probably wasn't too hard for Clockson to shoot his legs out.

In the crowd there were screams and surrounding adventurers were beginning to take notice of the situation. The crowd around them grew more dense as the population tried to see what was happening.

Sam looked at the dwarf and then back at the cloaked figure.
Alright. Play it cool.
"Yeah...", He chuckled nervously, "That was just about the worst date in my entire life.
Guy didn't even offer me dinner before trying to make a move."
Painfully he forced himself to laugh.
"Hahaha. So uh, yeah so go ahead and take him I guess...."

Again, as the events unfolded around him, it would take a full minute or two before his original assigned task would click in his mind.
What about THIS guy maybe?
He seems strong, collected, capable.
I've never seen him before, but Amaris would probably approve.

Taking a step forward, he'd smooth his hand over his bald head.
"You uh, primarily here to play cops and robbers though friend?
Or are you interested in some real coin?"

Sexy. Smooth. And damn right dangerous.
He'd be a fool to say no.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!"
Adventerur's in the crowd were being forcefully pushed to the side as a medium height male charged through them. As soon as he made it into the clearing it shoul've been clear who it was. But for some reason Sam was dull today and it took him a minute to decipher the figure.
Sides of head shaved but has man bun. Full but well maintained beard. Heater shield and ax on his back. Guild crest symbol on his armor.
OH.

With eyes of death, Fox glanced between Clockson, Sam and the crying dwarf.
"Is it not clear already that I prohibit the use of weapons?!"

"Guildmaster Fooxxx, my good ol' buddy!" Sam greeted sheepishly.
"How's it going man?
Good? Good."

"Shut up Sam." He warned, before turning his full attention to the synth.
"Do you mind explaining yourself?!"

---------------

Even in the garden, the gunshot was heard.
Amaris looked in the vague direction of the sound and sighed.
"That better not be Sam...."

(Shamelessly taking advantage of the confusion, me!
Muahahahahahaaa!)

The mask didn't shift, being a slab of iron.
But then, neither did the body language at a trigger pull, even though older pistols were basically handheld cannons.
"Wrong fellow? Hardly.
Been watchin' you more'n a week now, just to be sure."
Hood and mask both shifted, so as not to make the tattooed human think he was being ignored.
Manners were important, especially with so much potential for things to turn ugly.
Fear had a way of bleeding into anger.

This time, the voice crossed into outright friendly, rather than simply genial indifference.
"Well, neighbor, one thing at a time.
Depends on what-"
And that's when someone interrupted.
ADVENTURER, DESIGNATION: GUILDMASTER FOX. COMBAT CAPABILITY UNKNOWN, ASSUME NONHOSTILE. ADDITIONAL VIOLENCE = UNACCEPTABLE OUTCOME.
Turning to face the interloper, the hunter's tones regressed back to affably remote.
"I do apologize, sir; didn't see the sign.
Had I known, I would've taken him down the old-fashioned way, an' not stir up all this fuss."

The unarmed glove not currently gripping the butt of a pistol reached into his coat.
Slowly, so as not to spark a defense from perceived treachery, he withdrew a rumpled scroll of parchment.
Clockson extended this to the guildmaster, still keeping his gun trained on the prone dwarf throughout.
"Freelance mercenary, Clockson, sir. Never did register with your guild.
Under contract to bring this piece of work to the Lambs.
You'll find his laundry list on that warrant.
Normally, they just wanna work things out legally. Find they're usually willing to forgive an' forget, however it goes. Ver, here...?

He's proven time and again he's not a fan of what the law is for."
Should the apparent criminal attempt to crawl away in the discussion, the masked A.I. would have none of it.
Verdus would find a foot pressing firmly on his back, in that case.
Not hurting, exactly, but the feeling of ready force indicated the potential to do so.
KNEE INJURY, MOVEMENT IMPEDED. NONVITAL DAMAGE, REPAIR POSSIBLE WITHIN HOURS.

By the sound of it... and the look as the military synth approached... it was another synth causing this havoc. Joyous. Ecto just loved to get involved in situations like this.
Primarily because he could tell that the dwarf had a warrant.
"There was a sign?" the synth asked with an amused tone, walking up to the whole mess from behind Fox.
"I know the local area enough to take this fellow and find out how interested Everlyn's followers are in him if you'd prefer to cut the mess short, Guildmaster. Don't worry, synth. I won't claim the bounty in your stead," he mentioned as an aside, using his standard curt military speech now.
"Though I'm guessing this will just end up with us all going, if I remember standard protocol correct."

(And I posted after ALL of that.)

The Assassin of Chaos

The guildmaster glared at Clockson, and snarled as he snapped the parchment paper out of the synthetics hand.
Pulling his head back, he did his best to read the scroll.
All the while, everyone was in complete silence.
Even Sam, as he dared not interrupt the guild master.

When he was done, he'd glance at Clockson and back at the parchment repeatedly, as if trying to make some sense of it.
Once it seemed to finally click, he kept his gaze remained on the old synth.
"So let me get this straight.
You're hunting down THIS dwarf, on MY land, for CHUMP CHANGE?
Also, you are look weirder than I expected?!"
He threw the parchment back at the robot, expecting Clockson to catch it.

"Makes me queasy seeing someone with such a well-known name doing dirty work for the Church of the Rams."

"Lambs," Sam whispered under his breathe. <******** off Sam," Fox exhaled.

"Yessir."

It was just now he heard yet another robot, this one now offering to take the dwarf away.
Shooting a look at the newcomer, he gave him the death glare.
"YES THERE WAS A SIGN?!
And just who are you?!
And why do you think I feel like running off a ********' lolly gaggin adventure with yah right now? I'm a guildmaster! I got this entire place to look over, which by the way, is full of some of the most crazy people in the area because you have to be at least a TINY BIT nuts to be an adventurer!"
After his rant, he huffed as he tried to catch his breathe. Something about this seemed to be pulling his last mental strings for the day.

"Look,' He said, as he returned his attention back to the synth and the dwarf.
"I'll let you off the hook today because you're ignorant Clockson.
And because Verdus is a goddamn useless slob who rarely finishes his jobs."
He looked back up, his shoulders noticeably melting downwards as he relaxed.
"But you should really reconsider your line of work.
I've heard of you before. You're good at what you do.
But if you joined my guild, I guarantee you'd not only be making more, but you'd be doing more interesting jobs..."

Fox turned to Sam now, and pointed his finger just in front of his nose.
"And as for you.
KNOCK it off with the fights already Sam.
You haven't been here but for one day and you've already been in 4 fights. One more and you are DONE.
You hear me?!"

Sam nodded sheepishly.
"Yessir Master Fox.
You got it."

"Hmph. Good."
Smoothing his hand through the top of his head, the guild master decided that he was finally done here.
Like nothing had happened, his menacing stance diminished and now suddenly, he even looked a little bit smaller.
"Laters," He said cheerfully, as he pushed his way back into the crowd and disappeared.
And as soon as the guildmaster was gone, so was the crowd around them as everyone went back to their business.

Verdus groaned and moaned under Clockson's foot.
"Owwwww. UHHHGGGG. RRRHHH."
It was pretty annoying.

Sam regained his composure and chuckled when the guildmaster was out of sight.
"By the way, he's said that to me for the last 10 years.
He won't kick me outta here and he damn well knows it."
Stretching out his hand, he offered to shake Clocksons.

"Let me make a proper introduction of myself.
I'm Samuel."

He turned to the new synthetic and offered the same thing.
"Not sure who you are either, but that was very brave of you to step in.
And that was also a nice offer to make.
I'm not sure i can just run off with this dwarf though, I'm uh, actually here recruiting for another important mission.
Just like everyone else here I guess."
