A couple may have been attacked in a skate park because they were goths, police in Lancashire have said.

The 21-year-old man and his girlfriend, aged 20, were found with serious head injuries in the park at Stubby Lee.

Their faces were so badly swollen that police could not tell which person was male and which was female.

Five teenage boys, aged between 15 and 17, have been charged with section 18 wounding but officers are still appealing for witnesses.

The couple were initially taken to Fairfield General Hospital but later transferred to a hospital in Manchester.

They remain in a serious but stable condition, a police spokeswoman said.

Det Insp Dean Holden, leading the inquiry, said: "We believe they were attacked by a large group of people and we are still looking for other offenders."

All five youths are due to appear at Burnley Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Uncalled for really.

It is truely horrible, esp. when you grow up in a stereotype rich home. A gay hating dad, a goth hating mother and a prep sister. I grew up knowing that would happen. I think life is full of dicks, so trust noone(may sound harsh, but its cut throat over here)

eh, it happens. the majority of people are, of course, afraid of anything that does not agree with their silly little make believe worlds, and therefore attack it. My girlfriend and I are yelled at often, simply because we're goths, usually by people passing by in a car, a decidedly weak way of insulting someone, especially because the insults are often unimaginative, stupid little things such as "******** you goths" or "go back to hot topic"(especially funny because there isn't even a hot topic in this city, nor would I shop there if there were one), or some stupid s**t like that, probably because they know damn well that were they to stop, get out of their cars, and say something like that to my face, they would probably leave with several broken appendages and in need of a few stitches. In fact, one car even drove by the local goth/punk/metal/industrial club and yelled at all of us(there were about 30 people milling about outside in between band sets), and recieved a rousing collective yell of "******** you ********!", which in my opinion, was ******** great. in the end, your best bet is to be able to stand up for yourself. It's better to break their arms, legs, and ribs, after all, than it is to let them do it to you.

Sometimes I think that nothing will ever surprise me again, but there's really no getting used to hearing about things like this.

This is why I am a recluse most of the time. I'm not afraid of going out, I just hate that people would even think of doing such a thing to another person. If I see a prep I don't go a bash their face in because I don't like the way they dress and such.

If someone tried this on me, they'd have a switch blade, and 20 pond bag with books, and a biker father who would sue their asses (after kicking them of course) to deal with.

I hate people, and most of them hate me. good on em, I really don't give a s**t. I show kindness to those i feel deserve it, or at least do not deserve disrespect, and I show rampant, psychotic hatred to those who've done me wrong. they ******** deserve it, and they can kiss the crack of my pasty white a**. My philosophy is "Fear nothing", and treat every other ******** thing as lighthearted as possible, so I pretty much ******** laugh at everything, and the way I see it, if you're going to become afraid of everything you may as well ******** off yourself, because that's no way to live.
