For my Halloween costume this year, I plan on being goth... but i have very little idea as to what to buy or borrow... Heres a list I've put together over the last few days:

-Baggy pants w/ chains
-Combat boots
-T-shirt from some metal band (Slayer, Bodom, Maiden etc)
-Hair Dye
-Some kinda goth-y looking belt

Any suggestions or additions, comments even? Anything anyone has to say could be helpful... Plus all that pocket change from random posting adds up. woot.

Sadly, the costume you have so far adds up to either:
A) Mallgoth (known by others as "poseur goth")

or

B) Metalhead (with the former being more likely)

For suggestions on stuff to do for a more gothy outfit, try looking at the "Labels sticky" (for fashions of various goth scenes), or the Fashion subforum.
My first suggestion, however, is that if you want to do a gothy outfit, metal band shirts are a MAJOR no-no. The baggy pants with chains (Tripp pants) are also not going to help you much in trying to have a goth appearance.

I resent that, everyone knows true metalheads wear blue denim or tight leather pants.

While Tripp was originally made for the metal scene, it's true that Tripp is a ******** from standard metal fashion (they mostly appeal to mallgoths now; which is why I said that mallgoth seemed the more likely case than metalhead).

Now that to me is a snooty comment. Just because someone doesn't wear either blue denim or leather pants means they can't be a metal head. A guy I work with is an amazing metal band and he wears lose khaki shorts. If you saw him you'd think he was a skater but hes all metal and proud of it.

Wow talk about no one sticking to topic -.-;; This shouldn't be a debate, the man's asking a question here people. Even if you "think" his style would "look" a certain way doesn't mean anything at all. Besides in the stupid societies we live in it's not like there'd be anyone like you out there on the streets poking at everything everyone's wearing to say what they think they should really be or dress like. It's just Halloween people stare Stop being falsely judgmental and give him tips and keep the topic moving along.

Ok.
-Baggy pants I don't think necessarily mean goth so try to go for anything that looks dark, or better yet things you can add to it like metal crafts and what-not (if you can).
-Good.
-I've seen more goths go with tight shirts actually. If you're going for Gothic Metalhead then the t-shirt is Ok.
-Doesn't matter what color your hair is but if you're willing to go all out I'd get black with some nice highlights or streaks of blue, purple or something.
-If you're going with the t-shirt idea then a belt wouldn't matter.

More suggestions.

Erm.... it was a joke, based on the stereotypes of heavy metal, me being a metalhead myself am allowed to make such comments and plays on stereotypes without it being offensive.

Pretty much, recently I've taken to blue jeans, converse knock offs, black shirt and gray suit jacket.

As someone said before there are many different styles and it is the question what suits you best. An easy look would be you borrow or buy yourself a black leather trouser or black trouser, but no jean and a, hard to describe in english, black, long sleeved satin barrock/gothic shirt which has bottons, but around the upper part of the chest has some strings to bind. Also the sleeves are not "lean" but ..well look like the shirts barrockiean people wore. It`s really hard to describe if you don´t know the proper word. "Rüschenhemd, schwarz, Seide mit Bändern zum Schnüren" You get yourself black boots or black shoes, but in the case with black shoes you were black socks, and you borrow yourself a long black cloak or coat. With long I mean until the toes.

You can pale your face, but you must not, you can dye your hair or leave it as it is. If you have short hair, dying them black can never be wrong. Eyeliner, a few accessoires, ready you are.

The grey jacket looks silly.
