It was raining again. Not with the same force as the last storm, thankfully, but still enough to leave puddles on the ground. Kereng'ende lay sheltered within some bushes, watching fat little drops of rain hit the leaves and flowers around him. But even better than the sight of the dancing foliage was the music the rain made as it hit different surfaces.
Shaking his head slightly, the black lion forced himself to consider what Hadithi and Misae had told him about Muses. Oh, how very badly he wanted to find his own! It wasn't something that could be forced though, he reminded himself sternly.
It had been several days since his talk with the two lions who had lived here before he came. In that time, he'd kept himself isolated. Not out of rudeness, but he thought that perhaps he'd be better able to listen if he kept himself from distractions.
"Drip, drip, drop Little jungle shower Beating a tune As you fall all around," Kere heard himself singing in a soft voice, words seeming to match the pattern of the rain perfectly.
For a moment, he allowed irritation at himself to fester before shaking his head and laughing joyfully into the storm. Well, why not sing, he thought. He'd been allowing himself little enough fun these last few days. And he felt a desire to go play in the rains like a very little cub.
Moving from his shelter, he shivered delightedly as the warm, flower scented rain drops touched his fur. Laughing again, he began a simple game of catch the raindrop, all the while singing the words that had come to him out of nowhere.
"Drip, drip, drop Little jungle shower Beating a tune As you fall all around "

Laughter. Soft pittering laughter echoed through the little jungle glade as the rain fell to the earth, nourishing it. There was singing. For a moment, the soft laughter was silent, then it decided that the song was a grand one to perhaps join in on....
Drip, drip, drop Little jungle shower What can compare To this beautiful sound?
It repeated the song again, delighted at it's own cleverness.

Much to Kere's joy, he found himself inventing new words to his song. Still gamboling like a cub, he raised his voice and sang out.
"Drip, drip, drop Little jungle shower What can compare To your beautiful sound?
Drip, drip, drop When the sky is cloudy Your pretty music Can brighten the day!"
He paused in his capering, feeling more content than he ever had in his life. Closing rose pink eyes, he smiled as he listened to the rain, for a moment fancying that it laughed and sang with him.

And who is to say we do not, little brother, little dragonfly? It has been long and long since we heard such fine singing!
Laughing again, it sent more warm drops to soak into the singing one's mane. Soft, burbling laughter erupted on all sides as more little drops fell to rustle against the green, growing things that drank it in so thirstily.
The time for singing seized hold. Twining it's own melody to that of the strange singer, it felt a moment of contentment.
Drip, drip drop Little jungle shower Beating a tune Ev'rywhere that we fall

For a moment, as the warm rain caressed his mane, Kere thought he heard a soft, approving chuckle and a voice calling him 'little dragonfly'. The name brought a brief tear to his eyes, for that had been his mother's pet name for him when he'd been very tiny indeed.
The memory didn't hurt though. There'd been far too much happiness in the impression he'd gotten. So, without any hint of self-consciousness, he continued to sing to the rain, feeling that something of great importance was happening.
"Drip, drip, drop When the sun says hello You say goodbye right away
Drip, drip drop Little jungle shower Beating a tune Ev'rywhere that you fall
Drip, drip drop Little jungle shower I'm getting wet And I don't care at all!"

More laughter.
Oh very good, little dragonfly! Little Kereng'ende! The little dragonfly who delights in the coming of the rains. Little brother who is a part of us. We found you...
There would be plenty of time to learn and to teach. Time for joy, time for anger, and the times where there would be silence. But that could wait. For now, it was time for the Singing.

Bowing his head as the Rain's music came more and more clearly into his heart, Kereng'ende smiled and gave a happy wriggle. For a moment he stood completely, utterly still as he strove to hear the voice in the Rain. Hadithi and Misae would be proud of him for learning of his Muse, he thought.
But more than their approval, he felt a great contentment settle within his heart. He knew who he was and to what he belonged now. And never again would there be lonliness.
He would think deeply and consider all of this later. For now, he only had room for the feeling of peace and joy that the Rain brought. It was no longer a choice of whether to sing or not. He HAD to sing. The Rain had given him a gift. It was time to show what that gift meant to him.
Raising his head, eyes closed, he sang again.
"Drip, drop, drip, drop I'll never be afraid Of a good little Gay little jungle serenade!"

The Singing brought pleasure, a feeling of oneness with it. Now that the Kereng'ende had given it words for it's music, it was only right to sing it back to him in thanks.
Drip, drip, drop Little jungle shower Beating a tune As we fall all around
Drip, drip, drop Little jungle shower What can compare To our beautiful sound
Drip, drip, drop When the sky is cloudy Our pretty music Can brighten the day
Drip, drip, drop When the sun says hello We say goodbye right away
Drip, drip drop Little jungle shower Beating a tune Ev'rywhere that we fall
Drip, drip drop Little jungle shower You're getting wet And you don't care at all
Drip, drop, drip, drop You'll never be afraid Of a good little Gay little jungle serenade*
((* Song used Little April Showers from Disney's Bambi. With a few little changes made to the lyrics.))
