I started a thread about our favorite films earlier this week, and since it seemed so popular i though i would post a simmeler thread about our forvoite books, if thats ok with everyone here that is.
i read so much that i cant really pick a favorite, although i will admit to a passion for anne rice's older vampire novels. i also enjoy alot of Tannith Lee's short stories, especially Red as Blood, which is a fantastic take on both vampirisim as well as the Snow White fairy tale.
so put in your two cents everyone smile

Oooh, I would have to agree Anne Rice's older novels do take the cake on this one!

But as for none vampire books I'd have to go with:
The Picture of Dorian Gray ::: Oscar Wilde
Peter Pan ::: James Barry
The Day of the Jackal ::: Frederick Forsyth
Layer Cake ::: J.J. Connolly
And from there I am a HUGE Michael Crichton fan.

Gaston Leroux's "The Phantom of the Opera"
Dante Allegheiri's "Divine Comedy"
and ANYTHING by Howard Phillip Lovecraft.

I've read other vampire books but I have to agree that the older Anne Rice books are very good. Blood and Gold is one of my very favorites though. (As a side note I cannot stand the movie forms of Interview with a Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, or Queen of the Damned)

Non vampire books, oh it's a long list. My current favorites are Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series. But I also love The Phantom of the Opera( I love the movie, and the musical, I saw it in Vegas and it was amazing), and The Count of Monte Cristo( I can't stand the newer movie for this. It makes me very very angry), and so many others. smile

Too many favorites to list...I will throw out a vampire hillbilly novel,
Blood County by Curt Selby. It is well worth a read if you can find it. It's about a boy who comes home from the Vietnam War, considered dead, until they ship his body home and he returns to (un)life. He then has the choice of becoming a vampire king like his sire, ruling a town, or conquering his nature and freeing his hometown from the sire.

Hmm.. off the top of my head:

Howling Mad by Peter David (one of the funniest books I've read in a long time)
Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
Wolfsong by Tracy Briery
When will you Rage? by various authors
Forgotten Realms/Dragonlance/Ravenloft- the Avatar trilogy, Pool of Radiance, various short story collections(mostly involving dragons), Drow trilogy(have to pick that back up), Crucible: the trial of Cyric the Mad, Knight of the Black Rose series.
Dragonriders of Pern series
Many of Edgar Allen Poe's works such as- Masque of the Red Death and Fall of the House of Usher

(Ironically, I'm a big werewolf fan- 1st 4 all have them)
I also read a couple different manga series.

Karl May - all of his works
Leslie L. Laurence (aka Rejtő Jenő) - he is a hungarian writer, with great sense of humour and his books are so easy to read
