IN THE AVATAR ARENAWhen the Avatar Arena was established back in 2007, there arose a rare breed of entries that dared to use Gaia's limited resources to develop avatars that replicated popular characters existent within our culture. Known as "cosplays," these avatars required a highly trained eye and an expansive knowledge of the Gaian item database to achieve a look could be considered by today's standards as "roughly similar" to their characters. However, there were a select few that achieved this look more successfully than their competitors, and these were awarded with placement in the prestigious Avatar Arena Winner's Circle.
During Week 28 of 2007--only a few short weeks after the Arena's establishment--Gaian user Its Meark entered a cosplay of the Player Character "Kite" from the widely successful .hack//INFECTION - QUARANTINE gaming series. With the recent release of .hack//G.U. Reminisce (part two of the G.U. gaming trilogy) enough hype had been generated by the .hack// franchise to allow its characters to be generally recognizable. With the week's conclusion, Its Meark's entry claimed the #10 spot of the Winner's Circle, which, at this point, had been widely saturated with Original Avatars. With this, .hack//'s legacy within the Arena was established.
.hack// characters present unique challenges to those attempting to cosplay them. The character designs are often very intricate, including several details that--even with modern Gaia's seemingly inexhaustible item database--cannot be replicated due to item or layering limitations (Subaru and Endrance's skirts come to mind). However, when these avatars are executed correctly, they almost inevitably place somewhere within the since-segregated Cosplay Arena.
The most successful cosplayer, you might ask? Why, it is our progenitor, Its Meark, of course! With his eye for detail and clever tricks that deceive the typically restrictive Gaian layering, he has produced countless creations which astound his followers, many of which have been .hack// based.
The following posts will show to the extent to which .hack//, a buried gem among gamers and anime-watchers alike, has infiltrated and perpetuated throughout the existence of the Avatar Arena. I hope this trip through memory lane will inspire you to come up with your own cosplays, and maybe one day you, too, will join this Hall of Fame. Enjoy, and don't forget to congratulate and vote (fairly) for any .hack// cosplayer you may witness in the Arena~!
