I know we really don't see this much except for games like starcraft and cs, but I was wondering how everyone felt about "leet" speak.

It means nothing to me. It is confusing and pointless, in my opinion. I realize it was once used for pagers, but people using it otherwise just bugs me.

yeah it's pretty bad when you can't understand what a person's saying because there's too many numbers and random X's in their word

I personally hate l33t speech. I never really got into it even when I was considered a noob by most people. It doesn't really serve any purpose other than to annoy others.

To me, l33t speak is a cry for attention in pathetic attempts to be cool and unique, when it really just downgrades reputation even further. I've seen this one girl do it all over her xanga blog and her friends didn't really mind because it was supposed to make her "unique." I asked her about it once and she said she did it and continued to just because no one had a problem with it.

So I guess it just depends on who gets extremely annoyed by it. As for me, I get annoyed by it when I request the person to stop using l33t speak and use proper speech for once, but then the person kept on using it.

I personally don't care if someuses it, except if it is overused to the point that their words are illegible. I have even found mymyslef using the word "w00t" once or twice while playing World of Warcraft.

The only time that I ever use leet speak is when I am making up passwords. I try not to use that kind of language, (if you can call it that...) in my everyday posts.

I agree completely. It is really annoying trying to speak to someone who uses this pointless language ( if that is what you can call it ) to speak back to you.

Yeah, I don't mind it much. That is, until it gets illegible. After that, I become extremely miffed.

I second that motion. I understood the first half, but not the second.

Only good for when paranoid passwords insist on both letters and numbers being necessary. Otherwise obnoxious.

Translation: "Leet speak is very bad we should not talk in it"

Personally, I tend to use "1337 speak" in two situations:

One is when I'm intentionally mocking someone who kant speel rite so aye jsut doo it 2 anoy tem.

The other is when I'm gaming, in which case I will periodically use 1337 speak for emphasis while providing an intentional joke by its own usage; e.g.: "0wn3d!" or "wtf you h4x3d his hpz!!". It's never used in a serious tone, it's just an inherent joke.

I'll still never result to txt-speak abbreviations, but 1337 speak is more of a gamer meme than anything else.
