My personal choice would be squirtle, but it would probably be better if you started with charmander for the time being.

Well, it really depends on when you want it to seem hard actually. The way I've seen and experienced it, charmander makes things a little difficult in the beginning, but a little extra training and smart capturing of useful pokemon can easy overcome that hindrance.

Actually, in terms of gym leaders, bulbsaur is super effective vs. the first 2, resists the third, and is neutral vs. the fourth. Compare to charmander who is weak against the first 2, netural with the third, and super effective vs. the forth, and Squirtle who's super effective vs. the first gym, neutral to the second, and weak to the next two.

I'm also pretty sure that Venasaur/Charizard are the best grass/fire pokemon in gen 1 (starmie/gyarados>blastoise) and are more competitively viable than Blastoise (even though all 3 aren't that spectacular)

Yeah nitnit is right bulbasaur gets pwn'd by one gym leader Blaine... Yeah not so hard to get a water pokemon before gym seven!!!

Actually because bulbasaur ends up getting a poison second type, Sabrina's psychic pokemon beat him up as well. (for sabrina you're going to want to use bug/ghost/dark attacks anyways, which none of the starters have I believe)

You can beat the game using any of the 3 starters, you dont need to catch anybody else, just stick with your starter by the time you get to the gyms you are weak too, you are so overpower it doenst make any difference.

That's perfectly correct, but he asked who's the best, so I replied in terms of which pokemon is most useful in the beginning of the game when variety is limited.

ninja Charizard for the win. But seriously, in Blue version, I remember that my Charizard was level 81 by the time that I got the 7th badge.
