It was almost morning now, a little while after Mvua had been training with Hakuna. She still felt the burn in her mind at all the sudden information constantly pounded into her young mind. She had practiced some with her master (who had "gently" beaten her, though at least Mvua had begun to hold her own), but still wanted further practice to prepare for the next time Hakuna chose to play around with her "toy." She had grown better at dodging, and was now pawing at a flower growing from the tip of a long, floppy blade of grass. For once, it was almost like she had the chance to be like a real cub and play some. But that wouldn't last long. The white cub was almost right next to the den, and it wouldn't take long for one of the cubs to take notice of her. Now that the sun was rising and the natural warming of the earth was beginning, she began to feel a tingle of fear. Demons everywhere.

Quote: Nyota wasn't one who enjoyed the daylight much. Maybe it was because he blended better with the night, maybe it was because as long as he could remember, his mother always awoke him as the sun set... But he noticed the tuft of white fur outside the den and smirked slightly... This was the perfect chance to try out his Mother's toy.He rose with a slight yawn and stretched before slinking out of the den, careful to remain silent... Before he roared and pounced, attempting to pin the cub to the ground.

Just as Mvua had outstretched both front paws to swat at the sad (and now rather beaten up) flower, she felt sudden weight on her flank. This coupled with a loud (and rather unintimidating) roar. She saw a flash of blue, as dark as the night sky. Mvua would know that pelt anywhere. Nyota! she thought with a twinge of fear, just as her body was driven into the ground due to her lack of support from her front legs. Squeaking like a mouse, she tried to roll over in an effort to throw the younger cub off.

Quote: Nyota growled as Mvua rolled, and went with her, using the momentum to roll again so he could pin her beneath him. A twisted smirk found its way across his features. "I heard Mother's been teaching you how to fight..."

This other cub was smaller than Mvua, but he had good tactics. Now pinned, she clawed at the ground in vain, unable to reach him on her back. Then a thought struck her. "Yeah, a bit," she said, trying to sound unafraid. Nyota is younger than you. He's a little cub! He can't do anything! she tried to convince herself. But she could feel the demon within him, and there was fear in her heart. She tried to press her feet beneath her, then thrust upward in an attempt to buck Nyota off.

Quote: Oho, she was indeed learning! Her larger size easily threw him off, but Nyota was already a pretty skilled fighter. It took no effort for him to land on his feet, and his grin widened. "You have been learning! Mother was right to pick you as a toy!" he purred maliciously, eyeing Mvua and pacing around her, waiting for the next opening he could find.

The white cub quickly scrambled to her feet and made eye contact with her attacker. She put aside as much fear as she could, and even growled faintly at him, still trying to act like she knew what she was doing. She did her best to ignore his snide comments. This time, she wouldn't let him attack first. If only to catch him off guard, she persuaded herself. With that, she leapt awkwardly at his face, and regretted it instantly.

Admittedly, a head on attack directed towards someone like Nyota, who'd been participating in rather serious play-fights from the time he could walk, wasn't the best tactic. He growled and ducked just under Mvua's paws, feeling her claws graze his back before he pressed his own (much smaller) paws against her chest. And using her momentum, he rolled onto his back and kicked her in the underside with his hind legs, throwing her backwards. He wouldn't let her have him on his back for long though. He was on his feet again in a second, dust clinging to his midnight-colored fur as gold eyes observed his fellow cub.
He would make sure she learned something about fighting with a demon.

She certainly did regret it. As she flew right over the nimble cub, she managed to score only a few faint scratches on his back. Tumbling over, her stomach heaved when Nyota's surprisingly powerful kick threw her back like a plaything. And that's all I am, she reminded herself remorsely. A toy.
She remained on the ground, unable to stand back up yet. She knew she was horribly vulnerable, but the wind had been knocked out of her and she couldn't breathe. Her shining eyes glanced fearfully back at the night-colored figure, but this time she wouldn't make eye contact. She kept hopelessly gasping for air, her stomach concave after the blow. How can a cub like this do so much damage to me?

And it seemed like she'd finally learned her place. The aversion of her eyes... It was as good as a surrender. The cub smirked slightly, going over to stand over Mvua. Surprisingly enough, he moved to help the older cub up. At the very least, she had gained some respect for him. With some more training, she had the potential to be an excellent fighter. As long as she remembered her place in the pride, he could manage to be... Almost kind to her.
"Next time, try to avoid using a head-on attack unless you have the element of surprise. Your opponent can easily turn your own power against you," he said, moving to shake the dust from his fur.

Mvua had finally caught her breath, and her heartbeat calmed to a slower tempo. It seemed like the fight was over; Nyota made no move to hurt her further. Her eyes flickered to his, and saw no more hostility. Just a slightly stern hautiness. Her belly still hurt, but she didn't complain. The blue-speckled cub rose to her paws almost wanting to brace herself against him, but she decided against it. She wasn't sure whether this was just a trick.
Shaking her own fur, she listened earnestly to the other cub's advice. It was true, she had a kind of respect for him. She respected all of the demons, if only because of her fear of them. "I can see how that would happen," she said, trying to smile. That's exactly what had just happened.

"If you learn from your mistakes, someday you may be able to get the upper-hand in a fight against me," Nyota purred darkly, glancing at Mvua out of the corner of his eyes and sitting down next to her. His tail curled around his haunches and his muscles relaxed.

The white cub absorbed his advice, adding it to the collection of Hakuna's teachings in her mind. New tactics rushed into head, and she pursed her lips to hide her satisfaction.
"You mean like this?" she asked, suddenly slamming her shoulder into his to knock him off balance. She whipped around and tried to pin him down as fast as she could. This time, she pressed her back legs on his flank to try to prevent him from kicking her gut again. Her heart was racing again, and her face showed anything but victory. In fact, she was terrified of what she had just done. I don't mean to start the fight again! she thought. But I can learn. He must know.

The sudden ram to his shoulder quickly knocked Nyota off-balance, and once he was pinned under Mvua he looked at her with wide eyes. Rage was the first thing that boiled up in his chest, but it quickly dimmed at the look on the older lion's face. She was aware of what she'd done... After a long moment of silence, the midnight colored cub began to chuckle, and eventually that chuckle worked it's way into a full blown laugh. It was a sound that no doubt Mvua had never heard pass his lips before.
"Good, good! Now that is how you do a head-on attack!" he said, the laughter subsiding into amused chuckling after a few moments.

Mvua was frozen in place, utterly terrified by the laughter exploding out of the cub beneath her paws. It was true, she hadn't ever heard it before. But Mvua knew the familiar coldness from her master's cruel laughter as she amused herself with Mvua's torture. The awkward pause beforehand had seen a change cross over Nyota's face. Frankly, the white lionness hadn't the slight idea of what had just happened - or what to do next. There was a peculiar warmth in Nyota's praise, and inside Mvua was very proud of herself. But her lips were sealed and she didn't move an inch.
