DreamCasters

Dragons. Creatures of myth, beasts of terrible power. They raid villages, steal sheep, eat maidens. They breathe fire, using this weapon to wreak havoc upon unsuspecting humans for the mere pleasure of it. They hoard gold and kill those who dare to come near them.

Well, that’s what Earth’s dragons are like. In this realm of Aleah’Cim, dragons are so much more than that. They are intelligent beings who care for their mate and their hatchlings. They vary in color, ranging from blue, black, silver, gold, copper, bronze, white, red, green and white. All have scales, except for the rare gray dragons, which are born scaleless and remain so throughout life. To maintain a healthy, strong coat of scales, they must eat hard minerals, gems, metals, etc. Dragons only breathe fire, and are not creatures of magic, despite what many think. They are just as simply animal as a cat or a rhinoceros, with the ability to communicate in Drakine or thoughts and images. However, there is one particular ability dragons have…

They can DreamCast. They have the power to spin dreams out of their own imaginations and cast them on sleeping creatures. This causes the creature to have this dream. It can be a good dream, or even a nightmare. Dragons use this ability to hunt, terrorize, manipulate or paralyze. It all depends on the dragon.

But now dragons are being hunted. Humans are tired of being the victims of this strange power, and they grow bold. Alongside them, elves and dwarves aid their cause [no magic], lending their intelligence and strength to the inferior race of humans. Dragon hatchlings are stolen from mated pairs to be subjected to a life of servitude. These stolen dragons are used as steeds to deliver messages, war machines, or even labor. They are brainwashed into fighting against their own kind, smothered by human-ness to suppress their telepathic abilities and their DreamCasting abilities.

As a dragon, are you going to lie down and surrender without a fight? Is life as the most majestic, powerful being in existence worth nothing? Or will you fight with fang and fire to free your fellow dragons, and liberate your race with the destruction of the hominid races? It’s your choice. Choose wisely…

Note on dragons: Dragons grow to the size of a large elephant; no bigger. I don't want any ridiculously large dragons, please. Of course, they'll be much longer, and heavier, and deadlier. Feel free to mix and match colors all you want; I just want to make clear that you can only use the colors I posted. Anything else goes. Also, the first five years of a dragons life, the dragon is considered a hatchling. From five to eleven, they are considered drake [male] and drakka [female]. From eleven and up, they uncase their wings and become dragon [male] and dragonelle [female].

Okay, let me get one thing straight: No Anime pictures! There are millions of pictures out there to use.
Use [ Google ], [ AltaVista ], or [ Photobucket ].
Also, if your character has no family, just put N/A. Go nuts.
*Make sure your name is appropriate. Dragons are not named Ashley. Elves are not named Doug. Be creative.

User Name: Talon StarDrifter
Name: Irelia
Color: Black
Age: Forty-Five winters old
Appearance: Irelia is a black dragon; at her age, she has nearly reached her biggest size. Her back just barely reaches that of an elephant, and her wings are each as long as she is. If you laid out four tall elves, you’d have her length [some twenty-five feet]. Her wings are clawed at the joint. Her scales shine black, and her fringe runs the length of her neck down her back and ending at her tail, which is spaded. Golden eyes shine out against the black, and her belly is slightly lighter than the rest of her scales. Scars run along her body, causing some scales to grow irregularly.
Family: A mother and a father; three siblings.
Important Info: A Drakka at the age of five winters, Irelia was forced from the cave to live on her own. She was still relatively small then, but still managed to uncase her wings and become a full fledged dragonelle. Like all female dragons [dragonelles], she searches for a mate. However, she makes use of her talent as a DreamCaster and uses this ability to hunt at night and avoid hominids.

Claws clicked against the stone floor of the cavern, echoing sounds off the craggy walls. The sound of heavy footsteps filled the cave until the creature reached the mouth. A long neck snaked out, the head casting about in the moonlight for hominids. Seeing none, the great, golden eyes blinked and the rest of the body emerged from the cave.

Standing outside the cave was a great black dragonelle. Its scales glittered under the moon’s shine, promising great brilliance in sunlight. The dragonelle’s spaded tail whipped back and forth soundlessly, showing the dragon’s restlessness. Her great black head peered around the clearing, trying to discern what lay beyond the trees and undergrowth. Wings, each as long as she, rustled against her back. The fringe running from her head down to her tail flopped back and forth as her neck stretched this way and that.

Snorting in a satisfied manner, she shook out her huge, batlike wings and stretched them across the clearing. The thin membrane was frail, but it caught the wind like nobody’s business and helped keep her heavy frame in the air. Despite her weight, the dragon moved with an obvious grace that was only attained after years of life. Luckily for her, she had many of those under her metaphorical belt, and if she lived a hominid-free life, she would add many more.

Launching herself into the air, Irelia silently relished the feel of the cool, night air beneath her wings. Normally, she would have let loose a burst of fire in her delight, but she needed to remain unseen. All she needed was a handful of elvish archers; a single one could probably pierce her armored hide with the right type of bow and arrow; she had many vulnerable areas where her scales grew irregularly from old scars. With their damn hawk-like sight, they’d spot her vulnerabilities in a moment, day or night.

So with that thought in mind, Irelia flew as silently as an owl into the night, high above the trees. Her dragonelle instincts made her naturally gravitate toward the clouds where she’d have less of a chance of being seen. Irelia avoided open air when she could, but there wasn’t much cloud cover this night. She would have to risk being seen if she were to get to water. Although she could go an inactive day or two without food, she needed water every day.

The reflection of the moon down below her caught her attention, and her golden eyes homed in on it immediately. Warily circling the river down below, she cast her eyes about, searching for potential dangers. The only threat to a dragonelle of her size was a well-armed hominid, especially an elf or dwarf. Humans were much easier to dispatch, though they were much more plentiful than the other two hominid races. And their breeding habits could put rabbits to shame.

Thirst clawed its way up her throat, and Irelia decided to throw caution to the winds. Angling her body smoothly, Irelia dived toward the ground with wings tucked against her side to streamline her body. Just as she was about to land, Irelia snapped her wings out, instantly slowing her descent. The action strained the muscles in her back that controlled her wings, and Irelia slightly winced. But she landed without injury, and for that she was grateful. Casting around once more for threats, Irelia deemed it safe enough to drink.

Her great head snaked over to the water and she began to drink; her eyes, however, still roved about the river. There were no hominids around, but perhaps there was a crocodile or two just waiting to attack. The possibility was small, but Irelia was not willing to take any chances. She had not lived some forty winters by being careless.

Finally satisfied, Irelia decided to rest against one of the large trees in the area. She was slightly tired from the long flight, and she would rest a while. That way, before she started flying again, she would be able to drink some water beforehand. So the great black dragonelle rested her bulk against a tree, tail curled about her, head up in the air. She was sorely tempted to lay her head against the ground, but that would make her neck an easy target for any hominid with a sword or axe. But she rested nonetheless.

The young, white dragon, peered inside the cave where the hatchlings were waiting for him. He was quite small at about fifteen years old, but the hatchlings still looked up to him. He smiled and entered the cave, into the circle they had made for him. He breathed in the fresh air, which was even inside the dingy dark cave. Luckily his scales accumulated light. He spread his wings out to silence the hatchlings, and began to tell the story of Yertoi and Javn. This story he had heard a short time back, when he was traveling the world for stories. It was about the time when homnids and the dragon species got along. Yertoi, was a peaceful dragon of 120 years, and Javn was a twenty-nine year old elf, which is young for their age. The two were great friends, and were the last dragon and homnid friends to stay together.

After the story, the hatchlings squeaked in delight. Thye loved the stories of peace, even when it ended with the two main characters were separated for eternity.
"Navern!" One of the hatchlings shouted. "What happened to them?"
The white dragon, known as Navern, sighed and dropped his head. "Yentoi searched for the rest of his life for Javn, whom was executed at the age of fifty."
"Oh..."the hatchling sniffled.

Navern waved his wings in goodbye as he left the children. "Such good kids."

Irelia paused, her tail weaving back and forth slowly. Voices had drifted toward her sensitive ears, and although she was too far away to make out what was being said, she could tell it was Drakine. That meant there were dragons about. She stood, scales rippling, and shook herself. Dirt had made its way into her scales, and the feeling was uncomfortable. She stepped back to the river and glided in, her fragile wings acting as oars.

In the river, Irelia twisted and dove underwater, closing her water lids to protect her eyes from the possible sting of water and clamping her nostrils shut. She took this time to look around, making sure no crocodiles lurked in the water. The water was murky, but a little moonlight filtered down and helped the dragonelle's visibility. There was nothing in the river, save herself and a few thin fish. Irelia then submerged, and swam to the opposite end of the river before clambering out. She shook herself and sighed. The swim had gotten most of the debris out of her scales, but there was still a pebble or two that lingered. Snorting, Irelia shook out her wings and pumped them several times, drying them before lifting off into the air. Irelia followed the direction from whence the voices she had heard came.

Navern Leaped into the air and pumped his wings. He hovered above the cave and waited for the parents of the hatchlings. They normally were there before the story even ended... He scratched his neck thoughtfully as he landed in front of the cave. He heard the flapping of wings. Yes! The parents were arriving! His excitement dropped when he found it was but one dragon, no more. He grumbled to himself. Where were they!? Why are they taking so long!? He decided to fly up in the direction of the newcomer, noticing it wasn't even one of the parents.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:22 pm

Irelia had followed the sound to a cave sitting in the side of a mountain. Curiosity peaked, Irelia slowly drew closer. There was the sound of hatchings' chirps, and Irelia immediately banked right to get away. Parent dragons were extremely protective of their hatchlings; Irelia would be intruding and the parents would drive her away anyways.

Hearing flapping, Irelia surmised it was one of the parents coming to drive her away. Snorting, she craned her neck and looked back. It was a dragon. Why only one? He seemed to be staring at her in confused irritation; was he not the sire of the hatchlings? Irelia twisted in midair and hovered for a moment, seeing if the dragon would speak. If he roared challenges, then she'd fly away; if he simply wanted to speak, she would reply.

"Where are the parents." Navern replied strictly. The dragonelle was much older then him, it seemed. "I am Navern, the storyteller. Some of the parents drop them off to me to tell them the stories of the olden days, which I have learned in my travels. Who, may I ask, are you?" He craned his neck to the side and exhaled a small amount of fire in force of habit. "And again, I repeat, where are the rest of the parents?"
PostPosted: Thu Jun 19, 2008 6:31 pm

Irelia narrowed her golden eyes at the white dragon before her. He spoke very sternly, and was bordering on the rude side. Why did he think she was one of the parents? Irelia thought it slightly strange that dragons would leave their hatchlings in the care of another dragon. But then again, she was a stranger to these parts, and the ways of the dragons were probably different in this area.

"I don't know any of the hatchlings in there," Irelia sniped. "Their not mine. Why don't their parents watch over them?"

Navern sighed. "Normally they stay at the front of the cave, also listening to the stories. But every once in a while they leave for five or ten minutes, bu this time they haven't come back..." He trailed off. Where they attacked by elves, dwarves or humans? He flew slowly back down to the cave. He heard the hatchlings crying. He entered the cave. "Please stay calm." He said soothingly, the way he told stories. "Your parents may be late."
